Not with OBS alone. OBS needs an active computer—local or remote—to play the video, encode it and send it to YouTube. You can avoid leaving a local PC running by using a cloud streaming service or compatible dedicated hardware, but those options replace the computer; they do not make OBS run without a host. And scheduling a YouTube broadcast does not necessarily make it unattended: the documented workflow includes a manual Go live step after the preview appears.
What “without a logged-in PC” can mean
If you mean you do not want to stay signed in to a Windows desktop, OBS still needs a powered computer running the software and handling the stream. If you mean no local computer at all, you can use a cloud service or standalone hardware. If you mean no person present to start the broadcast, check the current YouTube and encoder settings: a scheduled event may still need a manual start.
YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. OBS is the encoder in the local-computer workflow; it cannot play and transmit a file after its host has shut down.

How to stream a prerecorded video with OBS on a computer
- Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Set up the live event and obtain its stream URL and key. YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream process is to wait for the encoder preview, then click Go live.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, either link your YouTube account through its integration or enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the stream settings. Treat the key like a password; do not share it or expose it in screenshots.
- Add the video. Add the prerecorded file as a media source in OBS and confirm that both picture and audio play as expected. Keep the computer powered, connected to the internet and running OBS for the entire broadcast.
- Choose and test encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. For H.264, its recommended video bitrates are 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees of a stable stream; use a connection with enough consistent upload capacity and test representative motion and audio before the event.
- Start and monitor the stream. Check YouTube’s stream preview and health, then follow the event’s start flow. Do not assume scheduling alone will start it unattended: confirm the current Auto-start controls in YouTube and OBS if you will not be there to click Go live. OBS interface behavior can change.
Scheduled, recurring and long-running broadcasts
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes reusing a configured stream for multiple scheduled or recurring broadcasts. In that documented common workflow, only one event is live at a time. Reusing the stream configuration reduces repeated setup; it does not remove the need for an active encoder, and API automation does not make OBS independent of its host.
Duration matters, especially for continuous channels. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish the same automatic-archive guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or longer, so do not rely on that archive behavior for a longer broadcast without checking YouTube’s current documentation and your workflow.

Prepare before going live
- Confirm that you have permission to stream the video, music and other material. A file being prerecorded does not exempt it from copyright rules or YouTube’s policies.
- Check whether the broadcast will be short or continuous, and decide how you will handle restarts, monitoring and archiving—particularly for streams of 12 hours or more.
- Test the complete path with representative video motion and audio. Watch YouTube’s stream health and adjust the encoder or connection if it is unstable.
- Protect the stream key. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
Troubleshooting common failures

Cost and control trade-offs
Running OBS locally avoids a cloud-service subscription but uses a computer, power and a stable home or office connection for the whole stream. A cloud service adds a recurring or short-term service cost in exchange for not maintaining the local host. Dedicated hardware replaces the computer with a physical device and its purchase and setup costs. A remote computer preserves OBS control over scenes and sources, but still requires a working, maintained encoder host. Compare the options on unattended start, file storage, restart recovery, monitoring, duration and archive handling—not just whether the local screen can be turned off.
