In OBS, add the devotional artwork as an Image Source and your audio file as a Media Source, then enable Loop on the audio source. Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, test that the audio reaches the viewer-facing preview, and only then start the broadcast. The image stays still; it does not need to be turned into a video file.
What you need before opening OBS
- A computer that can run OBS and a local image and audio file.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube may require channel verification and an initial wait of up to 24 hours before a first live stream is available; check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Permission to broadcast both the devotional image and audio on YouTube. Having a file or a personal listening subscription does not by itself establish broadcast rights.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings.
For one local audio file, OBS’s built-in Media Source is the simplest looping option. Use VLC Video Source instead when you need a playlist.
Build the still-image scene and loop the audio
- Create a scene. In OBS, select or create a scene in the Scenes panel. Under Sources, select the plus button and add an Image source. Choose the devotional image file. OBS documents adding sources and their stacking order in its Sources Guide.
- Fit the artwork to the canvas. Select the image in the preview and use the transform options to fit it to the canvas, or adjust it by dragging the handles. Check that important parts of the image are not cropped. Put the image below optional text or other overlays in the Sources list; sources higher in the list appear above those lower down.
- Add the audio file. In Sources, use the plus button and choose Media Source. Create a new source, browse to the local file, and enable Loop. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among the supported media formats. See OBS Media Sources.
- Check the audio meter. Start or preview playback and look for movement on the source’s meter in the Audio Mixer. Make sure the source remains active in the scene. If you also add an audio capture source, avoid capturing the same device both there and through Settings > Audio; OBS warns that duplicate capture can cause echo. See OBS Audio Sources.
- Listen to the output. An active meter confirms OBS is receiving audio, not that the YouTube audience can hear it. Monitor OBS output as appropriate, then verify playback in YouTube’s stream preview during a test.
Choose audio-file or playlist looping
| OBS source | Best for | Loop behavior and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local audio file | Enable Loop on the source to restart playback when the file ends. No VLC dependency. |
| VLC Video Source | A playlist of media files | Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the playlist. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS; for example, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
For this setup, use Media Source unless you specifically need a playlist. OBS describes the source choices in its Media Sources guide.
Set the canvas and YouTube encoder output
Use a landscape canvas that suits the artwork, fit the image, and inspect the scene in the OBS preview. The image is a static source, so it does not need motion or conversion to a video. In OBS output settings, select an encoder and streaming profile appropriate for your computer and connection.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps in its advanced settings. Use a compatible profile and check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before going live.
| H.264 example profile | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends retaining 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Run an upload speed test and select a bitrate that fits the actual sustained capacity, then confirm stream health in a test. See YouTube streaming tips. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but a stable feed to YouTube is still necessary.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe creating a stream and connecting an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or select the server and key as appropriate for the interface. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains stream-key settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it on screen or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube’s preview. Check the image, audio, and stream health before starting the public broadcast in the Live Control Room.
Test the broadcast and monitor it
Use a short test with the same image and audio behavior planned for the real stream. Check that the image is framed correctly, the OBS meter moves, the preview actually plays audible audio, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream; for a still-image broadcast, test the actual still and audio. OBS also recommends testing for a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a first broadcast. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
During the event, keep an eye on OBS and YouTube stream health. A moving OBS meter alone cannot reveal a viewer-side mute, a wrong scene, or a YouTube ingest problem.

Clear rights for the image and audio
Use material you created, licensed for this exact use, or are otherwise legally entitled to broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Identified material can trigger a warning and placeholder; persistent content may temporarily interrupt or terminate a stream. Even a licensed track can be interrupted unless its rights owner allowlists the channel. Keep permission and license terms accessible, and ask the rights owner about allowlisting where relevant. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s separate live Content ID matching program has its own requirements, including exclusive rights for material enrolled in that program. That is not a blanket rule that every creator must use only self-created material; for an ordinary broadcast, clear the rights to the specific image and audio and meet any required allowlisting conditions. See YouTube’s live Content ID matching requirements.

Common problems and fixes
- The image is cropped or has bars: Select the Image Source and adjust its fit and position in the preview. Check the canvas dimensions and inspect the full artwork before going live.
- The audio stops at the end of the file: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, use VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist.
- The meter does not move: Confirm the Media Source points to the right local file, is active and audible in the scene, and is not muted in the Audio Mixer. Reopen its properties if the file path is wrong.
- The OBS meter moves, but YouTube preview is silent: Check the stream’s audio track/output configuration and test again in YouTube’s preview. Do not treat the OBS meter as proof of viewer-side audio.
- You hear an echo: Check whether the same device is captured both as a scene source and in Settings > Audio. Remove the duplicate route.
- OBS cannot use VLC Video Source correctly: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS, such as 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. If you only need one file, switch to Media Source.
- YouTube does not show an incoming stream: Recheck the selected server URL and stream key, confirm the correct encoder stream is open in Live Control Room, and verify the connection and OBS output settings.
- The feed is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: Reduce output bitrate or resolution to fit the available upload capacity, retain the recommended bandwidth headroom, and test again. Check the current YouTube recommendations rather than assuming a nominal speed test result is sustainable.
- A copyright warning or interruption appears: Review the identified content, confirm the actual broadcast rights and any allowlisting requirement with the rights owner, and replace or remove uncleared material before resuming.

- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. A slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support.
