Yes, but not automatically just because you scheduled separate livestreams on YouTube. OBS can play multiple files in a VLC Video source, but YouTube’s schedule does not tell OBS which playlist to use. Prepare a separate source or scene for each playlist, then select it manually for each event or configure a tested automation method to switch scenes or sources.
What OBS and YouTube handle separately
OBS’s VLC Video source can contain multiple media files, much like an image slideshow. You can set the source to loop or shuffle its playlist. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
A YouTube scheduled livestream is a separate event. YouTube’s encoder workflow has you connect an encoder with the stream URL and key, start the encoder, check the preview, and click Go live. Scheduling the event does not, by itself, assign an OBS playlist or start the encoder. YouTube describes optional auto-start and auto-stop settings for supported stream configurations, but those concern stream start and stop—not choosing a different OBS playlist. Check the current event settings in Live Control Room if you plan to use them. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and its stream scheduling guidance.
Set up a different playlist for each event
- Install VLC if needed. In OBS, add a VLC Video source. If the source is missing, install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Create a source or scene for each playlist. Add the relevant media files to each VLC Video source in the order you want. Give sources and scenes clear names, such as “Tuesday playlist” or “Event 2,” so you can identify the right one before going live.
- Choose playback behavior per source. Set Loop Playlist if you want that source’s files to repeat, or Shuffle Playlist if you want them played in a different order. These settings govern playback within that source; they do not switch OBS to another playlist.
- Choose how to select the event’s playlist. For a manual workflow, open the matching scene or select the matching source before starting the event. For an automated workflow, configure a scene- or source-switching method with a trigger that fits your schedule. An OBS forum discussion suggests separate scenes and the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin, but it is community guidance rather than an official, version-specific recipe. Confirm that the plugin, trigger, and switching behavior work with your installed versions.
- Set up the YouTube event and encoder. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the scheduled stream. Connect OBS using the stream URL and stream key for that event, start the encoder, check YouTube’s preview, and click Go live as directed by YouTube.
- Test the full sequence. Before relying on an unattended schedule, check that each event selects the intended scene and files, that audio is present, and that the encoder preview looks right. Confirm whether the stream should end or continue after the playlist finishes. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality; its live streaming troubleshooting guidance covers stream checks.
Manual selection or automation?
| Approach | What you do | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | Select the prepared scene or source for each event. | Straightforward to set up, but someone must select the correct playlist. Include this check in the pre-stream routine. |
| Automated | Configure a scene or source switch using a schedule or another trigger. | Requires setup and testing in your particular OBS and plugin versions. The cited community suggestion does not establish a universal configuration or comparative reliability. |
In either approach, the switch between playlists is an OBS task; YouTube’s event schedule and encoder controls handle the livestream event and its start or stop workflow. The official OBS and YouTube guides do not describe a built-in mapping from each scheduled YouTube event to a named OBS playlist.
