How to Extract and Replace an Audio Track Before Streaming a Video on YouTube

Replace a prerecorded video’s audio in an editor before streaming it. Then connect the finished file to a YouTube encoder, check the preview, and test the stream.

To replace audio in a prerecorded video before streaming it on YouTube, edit the file first: separate or extract its original audio in a video editor, add and sync the replacement track, then export and review a finished audio-video file. After that, send the file through a YouTube-compatible live encoder. Editing the recording and streaming it are two separate steps.

Choose the right workflow for the audio change

YouTube Studio’s built-in Editor can add music from YouTube’s Audio Library to an uploaded video. Its documented feature is not a general-purpose tool for extracting an arbitrary source track and replacing it with any audio file you supply.

  • Adding an Audio Library song to an existing upload: You can use YouTube Studio’s Editor on a computer.
  • Replacing a source track with audio you provide before a planned livestream: Use a video editor with timeline and audio-track controls, export the completed file, and then stream that file through an encoder.

The YouTube help guidance does not specify a particular third-party editor or universal extraction steps. Menu names and controls vary by application, so use the editor’s documentation for its exact track-separation procedure.

Extract and replace audio in a video editor

  1. Keep untouched copies. Make a working copy of the video and retain the original video and replacement audio files. This gives you a fallback if the edit, mix, or export is wrong.
  2. Separate the original audio. Import the video into an editor, then use its audio separation, detach, or extraction control to put the source audio on its own track. If you intend to remove it, mute or remove that track only after checking that it contains no sound you need to preserve.
  3. Add the replacement track. Import the supplied audio and place it on the timeline beneath or alongside the video. Align its beginning with the intended picture and check its timing through the entire program—not just at the opening.
  4. Set the mix and boundaries. Listen for clipping, unwanted overlaps, gaps, abrupt starts or endings, and source sound that remains audible under the replacement. Adjust levels and trim the audio to fit the video. If the replacement is shorter or longer than the picture, decide deliberately where it should end or how the remaining picture should sound.
  5. Export a finished audio-video file. Choose an export format your intended live encoder accepts. Check the exported file from beginning to end for audio/video sync, intelligibility, clipping, gaps, and the opening and ending. Export settings for an uploaded video are not automatically the right ingest settings for a livestream.

When YouTube Studio’s Audio Library is enough

On a computer, open YouTube Studio → Content → select the video → Editor → Audio. Preview Audio Library songs, add a selection, adjust its start, trim its duration, and save. This route is for adding a Library selection to an uploaded video; it does not provide the documented general extraction-and-arbitrary-replacement workflow above.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • The audio-editing feature is limited to videos shorter than 6 hours.
  • For a video with more than 100,000 views, saving the edit may be unavailable unless you are in the YouTube Partner Program.
  • YouTube’s current help page says that, as of June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes could no longer be undone with “Revert to original.” Preserve your original file before editing.
  • The YouTube mobile app cannot change a video’s audio track; use a computer for this Editor workflow.

Prepare the YouTube livestream

  1. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the stream you plan to use.
  2. Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it. The encoder sends the finished audio-video output to YouTube; it does not perform the preproduction audio replacement.
  3. Set live ingest parameters. Use a format supported by both the chosen encoder and YouTube’s live guidance. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for video; AAC or MP3 for audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its listed live audio recommendations are 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1, with 128 kbps for stereo or 384 kbps for 5.1.
  4. Choose a sustainable bitrate. Set the encoder’s video bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and ensure your available upload bandwidth can sustain the combined audio and video stream. The reviewed YouTube live guidance supports choosing settings for the actual ingest path; it does not establish one bitrate that is right for every resolution, frame rate, and connection.
  5. Prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm the encoder supports the selected codec, protocol, and stream settings before the event.
  6. Preview, test, then go live. Start the encoder and check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before starting the broadcast. Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the event.

YouTube says livestreams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as a substitute for saving and checking your own finished source file.

Do not mix up upload settings and live settings

YouTube’s separate upload recommendations list MP4 and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz. The cited upload guidance carries a scope note that its features are available to Studio Content Manager partners. Those are upload recommendations, not a replacement for the live encoder guidance above. Choose settings for the delivery path you are actually using.

Protect the stream’s audio rights

Replacing a track does not by itself establish that the new audio is cleared for a YouTube livestream. Use audio you have permission to use for the intended broadcast, and check the applicable license terms. A song being available in a library or supplied as a file does not, on its own, answer every rights question for your use. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream requirements before scheduling the event.

Troubleshoot common audio and stream problems

  • The old audio is still audible: Check for a second source-audio track, linked audio, or an unmuted layer in the editor. Re-export and listen to the rendered file rather than relying only on the timeline preview.
  • The replacement is out of sync: Check alignment at the start and at later points in the program. If sync drifts, revisit the timeline and export rather than trying to correct an edited file only in the live encoder.
  • The stream has no audio or the wrong audio: Check the exported file’s audio, the encoder’s selected audio source and format, and the Live Control Room preview before going live.
  • The stream preview is unstable or reports health problems: Check that the encoder is using the selected ingest settings and that upload capacity can sustain the combined stream. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health; adjust and retest before the event.
  • The Studio Editor will not save: Check the video-length and view-count limitations above, and whether the Partner Program condition applies. If you need arbitrary replacement audio for a planned live event, prepare the file in a separate editor instead.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the finished recording is ready and you want it to keep looping as a YouTube livestream without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
