To remove ordinary file and stream tags before looping a video on YouTube Live, make a new copy with FFmpeg’s metadata mapping disabled, then inspect that copy with ffprobe and play it before using it. The command -map_metadata -1 is a useful starting point—not a guarantee that every kind of embedded or downstream data is gone.
Remove ordinary metadata with FFmpeg
Keep the original untouched. Remuxing with stream copy avoids re-encoding the audio and video, while disabling automatic metadata copying for the output. FFmpeg documents metadata mapping separately from stream mapping, so this command should be treated as a starting point for ordinary tags rather than a universal data eraser (FFmpeg documentation).
- Inspect the source. Run
ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.mp4. Review the format and streams, and note any tags or tracks you specifically want to remove or retain. The ffprobe documentation describes file and stream inspection. - Create a separate output file. Run
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map_metadata -1 -c copy output.mp4. Replace the filenames with your actual paths. Do not overwrite the source. - Choose tracks deliberately if needed. If the file has multiple audio tracks, subtitles, data streams, or attachments, inspect them before deciding what belongs in the output. FFmpeg’s optional and negative stream mapping controls can select or exclude streams; metadata cleanup alone is not a reason to discard useful tracks.
- Handle chapters separately. Chapter information has its own mapping control in FFmpeg. If chapters must also be excluded, consult FFmpeg’s output metadata and chapter-mapping documentation and test the result;
-map_metadata -1alone should not be presented as a guarantee that chapters or every other data type are removed. - Verify the result. Run
ffprobe -hide_banner -i output.mp4and inspect format-level and per-stream tags. Compare with the source, then play the output and check the picture, sound, orientation, timing, and tracks you meant to keep.
This is documentation-based guidance, not a tested guarantee for every container, codec, or encoder. Test a copy made from your own file before relying on it in a live workflow.
What the command does—and does not—remove
-map_metadata -1 tells FFmpeg not to automatically map metadata to the output. Metadata may exist in different places, including at the format level or on individual streams, and FFmpeg’s behavior can depend on how the output is made. A single generic command should not be described as removing every descriptive field or every hidden bit of data from every media format.

Container tags, stream tags, chapters, attachments, subtitles, timecodes, codec-level user data, and filesystem timestamps are distinct. The cited FFmpeg documentation explains metadata mapping and some behavior around re-encoding, but it is not a complete format-by-format removal guide for all of those categories. In particular, file processing does not establish what an encoder transmits or what YouTube retains in a live feed or archive.
Stream-copy remuxing versus re-encoding

Prefer stream copy unless a specific metadata target or format behavior makes another approach necessary. If you do re-encode, inspect and play the result just as carefully; an encode can change the media without proving that all embedded data is gone.

File metadata and YouTube Live settings are separate
Cleaning the local file does not set the public stream title, description, privacy, or encoder connection. Configure those in YouTube Live Control Room, where stream settings and stream keys are managed (Manage live stream settings). A stream key is a credential used by the encoder to connect, so keep it private.
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, supported codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. These are ingest recommendations, not metadata-removal settings; confirm current requirements for your selected stream setup. YouTube also advises testing, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality (live streaming tips).

- Set the stream’s title, description, privacy, and other event details in Live Control Room.
- Configure the encoder for the applicable YouTube ingest protocol and settings, and enter the stream key privately.
- Test the stream, inspect the preview, and monitor stream health and audio/video quality before relying on the live session.
Local cleanup does not guarantee how every encoder handles metadata or what appears in YouTube’s live feed or archived video. Those downstream behaviors are not established by the file-remux command.
