Yes—but YouTube’s own playlists are for viewers, not for rotating the content in your outgoing live broadcast. To change what appears in one continuous stream, compose the broadcast in an encoder such as OBS: use scenes and hotkeys for manual switching, or put local clips in OBS’s VLC Video source to loop or shuffle them. The official OBS guidance cited here documents those controls, not a built-in schedule that automatically rotates several separate playlists.
First, clarify what “playlist” means
A YouTube playlist is a collection of YouTube videos that a viewer can play or loop. YouTube’s playlist instructions describe viewer playback and playlist management; they do not describe a control for changing the content of a creator’s outgoing live stream. YouTube’s playlist-loop instructions cover playback, not broadcast composition.
An encoder media playlist is different: it supplies local video files to the live broadcast. That is the relevant option when you want prerecorded gaming clips to appear during a live stream. In OBS, the VLC Video source can contain multiple media items and offers loop and shuffle controls. VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS Media Sources
Set up one live stream with content you can switch
- Enable YouTube live streaming. Confirm live streaming is enabled for your channel before planning the session. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Choose your inputs. For live gameplay, add a game or display/window capture source as appropriate. For prerecorded clips, add a Media Source for an individual local file, or use VLC Video when you want a playlist of files. You can combine gameplay, media, overlays, and audio in your broadcast layout. OBS Sources Guide
- Make scenes for the content you want to show. For example, create one scene for live gameplay and another for a prerecorded clip playlist. Scenes hold the sources that make up each layout; switching scenes changes what viewers see without requiring a second live broadcast. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Set the VLC playlist behavior, if using it. Add the local files in the intended order, then choose whether to loop or shuffle them. This controls playback within that VLC source; it does not create a schedule that switches among multiple separate playlists.
- Assign and use hotkeys for manual changes. OBS supports hotkeys for switching to a specific scene and showing or hiding sources. Set the shortcuts you prefer in OBS’s hotkey settings, then use them to change content while the same broadcast remains live. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Test before going live. Start a short test, check the Live Control Room preview, and monitor both audio and video. Verify that local files play, the correct audio is audible, scene changes work, and the clips appear in the intended order. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the stream. Can OBS automatically rotate several separate playlists?
The cited OBS documentation establishes that a VLC Video source can play a list of media items with loop and shuffle, and that scenes and hotkeys can control what is shown. It does not establish a native timer or scheduler that rotates among several distinct playlist sources automatically. If timed rotation is essential, verify the current OBS automation or plugin workflow you plan to use, including how it handles scene changes, audio, and recovery after a playback error, before relying on it during a live session.

Common problems and fixes
- You cannot find VLC Video in OBS: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS as needed. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source to appear.
- A playlist plays, but does not move to another playlist: Loop and shuffle apply to the items in the VLC source. Use manual scene/source switching for separate content sets, or independently verify a current automation method if you need scheduled rotation.
- The stream is live but viewers see the wrong content: Check the active OBS scene and confirm the intended source is visible. Test each hotkey before the session.
- Viewers hear missing or doubled audio: Check which sources provide audio in each scene and monitor the live preview during a test. Confirm transitions do not leave an unintended audio source active.
- You cannot start the broadcast: Check that live streaming is enabled on the channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the planned stream.
- Video or audio quality is poor: Use YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and monitor the stream’s audio and video before relying on the setup for a long session.
