The -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input; it does not create, select, or make audible an audio stream.
1. Confirm the VOD actually contains audio
A video file can display normally while containing no audio track. Inspect it before changing the streaming command:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i "gameplay.mp4"In the output, look for a stream identified as Audio. If there is none, FFmpeg cannot restore the original sound with a mapping or codec option. Use a source file that contains audio, or deliberately add a separate audio source if that is what you intend.
2. Check which streams FFmpeg sends to YouTube
FFmpeg’s input inventory shows the streams it found; the later Stream mapping lines show which ones it routes to the output. The FFmpeg documentation describes -map as the option for selecting input streams.

For a single input where the first video and first audio streams are wanted, an illustrative explicit mapping is:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i "gameplay.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 [your existing encoding and output options]This is a mapping example, not a tested command for your setup. If the file has multiple audio tracks, or the command has several inputs, inspect the inventory and adjust the input and stream indices to select the intended track. An option such as -map 0:v -map 0:a? makes audio mapping optional: if no audio stream exists, FFmpeg can proceed without it, leaving the output silent.
3. Distinguish an omitted track from a silent signal
If the output mapping includes an audio stream but the stream still sounds silent, check whether the source track itself contains audible signal and whether the selected track and channel layout are the ones you expect. An encoded audio track is not proof that it contains audible sound. The available official requirements do not establish one universal cause for a silent signal that is present in the output.

4. Match settings to the confirmed YouTube ingest protocol
Do not assume HLS requirements apply to an RTMP stream. Confirm which ingestion protocol your setup uses, then follow the matching YouTube guidance. The figures below are HLS-specific, not universal YouTube settings.
If your stream uses HLS
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, specifies muxed audio and video in M2TS, supports H.264 or HEVC video, and identifies AAC audio with one audio track. It recommends HLS segments of 1–4 seconds, with a maximum media-segment duration of 5 seconds, and supports up to 60 fps.

YouTube Help’s HLS setup page lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 among audio encoder settings. It recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, with audio bitrates of 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1. The page does not state a publication date. Check the applicable HLS instructions for your specific setup rather than treating these recommendations as RTMP settings.
The developer guide says HLS uses segments and generally has higher latency than RTMP/WebRTC-based ingestion. For an HLS output that fails to ingest, inspect the URL and playlist/segment handling as well as the audio. Documented HLS response codes include 400 for a malformed URL or playlist, 401 for an invalid or expired identifier, 405 for the wrong method, and 500 for a server processing failure. These indicate destination or ingestion problems; they do not by themselves establish why an otherwise ingested audio signal is silent.

If your stream uses RTMP or another protocol
Do not carry over HLS-specific M2TS, codec, sample-rate, bitrate, or segment settings. Consult YouTube’s guidance for the protocol you actually use; the sources linked here establish HLS requirements, not a complete set of RTMP requirements.

- Inspect the source and identify the intended audio stream.
- Review FFmpeg’s input inventory and verify the output mapping includes that stream.
- Check that the output follows the requirements for the confirmed YouTube ingestion protocol.
- Make a short test output or controlled stream and verify that it has both video and audible audio before relying on an extended loop.
