To stream gaming VODs stored on an external SSD, connect the drive to a computer and use an encoder to play the files and send the resulting feed to a YouTube Live event. A YouTube playlist only organizes videos already hosted on YouTube; it does not play local SSD files as a live broadcast.
How the SSD-to-YouTube workflow works
The path is external SSD → computer and encoder → YouTube Live. The SSD provides the local video files. An encoder plays them and sends video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and key for your event. YouTube lists OBS among the available software encoder options.
Keep the SSD connected and the computer running for the duration of local playback. The drive itself does not broadcast, and creating a playlist in YouTube Studio does not make files on the drive appear in that playlist.
Prepare your channel, files, and connection
Check YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have livestreaming restrictions in the past 90 days to live stream. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable Live before the day you intend to broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Check the SSD and VOD files
- Connect the SSD to the computer you will use to broadcast, and confirm that the operating system can read it.
- Open each VOD individually before configuring the broadcast. This helps identify a damaged or unsupported file before it interrupts the sequence.
- Check the intended order, file lengths, and audio. Keep the drive connected throughout the stream.
- There is no established minimum SSD speed, capacity, brand, or connector for this workflow. Choose based on your files, computer, and a playback test rather than assuming the title of the drive guarantees compatibility.
Check upload bandwidth
The critical network measure is upload capacity: the encoder sends the stream out to YouTube. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the bitrate you configure. A speed test’s download result does not establish that your upload capacity is sufficient. Review YouTube’s streaming tips and network guidance when planning the bitrate.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or select the live event. If Live has not previously been enabled for the channel, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a recording or screenshot.
- In your encoder, set up playback of the local VOD files and choose YouTube as the streaming destination. Enter the event’s URL and key in the encoder’s stream settings. OBS is one software encoder option; see the OBS Help Portal.
- Configure output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for your source and connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations rather than guessing a value; available settings and labels vary by encoder and version.
- Start the encoder’s preview or send the feed to Live Control Room, then check the preview before making the event public or starting the planned broadcast.
Exact OBS steps for building a multi-file local playback sequence depend on the current OBS version and setup. The official OBS profile documentation explains that profiles save settings such as stream and output, while scenes are stored separately: OBS Profiles (dated January 14, 2022). Verify current controls in the application instead of relying on an assumed button name or sequence.

Test the whole sequence before going public
Use a representative section with both motion and audio, and check the entire file sequence if practical. YouTube advises checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring audio and video quality before and during a broadcast.
- Confirm the event preview shows the expected picture and sound.
- Check file order, transitions between videos, and audio levels—especially at the start and end of each file.
- Verify that the SSD remains mounted and each file continues to play.
- Watch stream health and make sure the available upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
When you are ready, start the encoder and monitor the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the event and archive handling in Studio if you need a recording afterward.

Keep the VODs legal and suitable for the channel
Only stream gameplay recordings and other material you have the right to broadcast. A live encoder does not change copyright ownership or grant permission for game footage, music, overlays, or other third-party material. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance covers channel requirements; review YouTube’s current copyright rules and the rights applicable to the material before streaming.
Separately, a successful live broadcast does not guarantee monetization eligibility. Reused-content decisions are distinct from whether you can technically stream a file. Make sure the channel and videos comply with YouTube’s current policies; do not assume that looping or rearranging existing footage makes it original.

Troubleshoot common failures
