YouTube does not document a guaranteed way to restore a playlist’s exact active video and position after a reboot. The dependable workaround is to save your gaming reruns in a playlist, then reopen it after reboot and select the video you were watching. If you’re signed in, YouTube usually resumes that individual video near its previous point—but playlist position and video progress are separate.
What YouTube does—and does not—resume
- Individual video: YouTube’s progress feature usually resumes a partially watched video when you select it again while signed in. YouTube says, “When you play the video again, it will restart from where you were.” That refers to the video’s timestamp, not the playlist’s place in its sequence. YouTube Help: Video progress bar
- Saved playlist: A playlist keeps the collection and its sequence available to reopen. YouTube’s playlist guidance does not promise that the player will remember which playlist item was active after a reboot. YouTube Help: Create & manage playlists – Android
- Browser queue: A queue on a computer is temporary; YouTube says it will not be saved after the browser closes. YouTube Help: Queue videos on YouTube – Computer
- Playlist repeat: Looping repeats a playlist; it is not a reboot-recovery setting. YouTube documents playlist repeat controls for TV and gaming-console players. YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube
So, plan to reopen the playlist and choose the interrupted video yourself. YouTube may restore that video’s timestamp, but it does not document automatic restoration of the playlist’s former active item and cursor after a full reboot.
Save gaming reruns so you can find them again
- Create or open a playlist: Add the rerun videos to a saved playlist rather than keeping the only sequence in a temporary queue. YouTube’s playlist tools let you create and manage playlists. See YouTube’s playlist guidance.
- If you made a computer queue, save it before closing the browser: Use YouTube’s option to save the queued videos to Watch Later or another playlist. A browser queue itself does not survive browser closure. See YouTube’s queue guidance.
- After reboot, reopen the playlist on the playback device: Find the saved playlist, then select the rerun that was in progress. Don’t assume playback will automatically restart at the former playlist item.
- Check progress on that video: When signed in, a partially watched video will usually resume from its earlier point. This is not universal: a video near completion may not restart from its former position, and clearing watch history removes progress bars. YouTube Help: Video progress bar
If you want reruns to repeat continuously
On a TV or gaming-console player, use YouTube’s Repeat control and select playlist repeat. This makes the playlist repeat at its end; it does not preserve the active playlist position across reboot. YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube
Fix missing or stale video progress
- Confirm you’re signed in: YouTube associates progress bars with signed-in users on TV, computer, and YouTube mobile apps. Check that the playback device is using the account where you watched the rerun. YouTube Help: Video progress bar
- Refresh the browser or feed: Progress may not update immediately. YouTube recommends refreshing if the progress bar appears out of date. YouTube Help: Video progress bar
- Check watch history: Clearing it also clears progress bars, so YouTube may no longer show the prior timestamp. YouTube Help: Video progress bar
- Distinguish a queue from a playlist: If the sequence was only in a computer browser queue, recreate or save it as a playlist; the queue is not retained after closing the browser. YouTube Help: Queue videos on YouTube – Computer
Why a custom player is not the same as YouTube app recovery
Developers using YouTube’s IFrame Player API can cue or load a playlist at a specified index and start time. That is functionality for a developer-controlled embedded player; it is not evidence that ordinary YouTube apps save and restore playlist playback state after a reboot.
