The practical work is keeping the process and network healthy, clearing rights for everything in the feed, and deciding how to handle replays: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
How the setup works
The basic path is: prepared video or audio feed → Hetzner Cloud virtual machine → encoder → YouTube Live. The server runs the software that sends your feed to YouTube; YouTube then distributes the live stream to viewers. A server can keep running when your own computer is off, but the completed broadcast depends on the server, your software, the network path, and YouTube ingest.
Hetzner Cloud servers are virtual machines on which you install an operating system and programs. Hetzner lists Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, CentOS, Rocky Linux, and AlmaLinux among supported operating systems. Choose a system your team can update and administer. A server needs a public IP for public internet access; a Primary IP is not automatically included with every server. Hetzner’s server overview lists IPv4 Primary IP at €0.50 per month excluding VAT, but prices and availability can change, so check the current provider page before ordering. Hetzner Cloud documentation
Choose an approach and size the server for it
There is no source-supported universal CPU or RAM minimum for this workload. First decide whether the server will encode/transcode the source or simply forward already-encoded media. Encoding generally adds CPU work; forwarding a prepared stream is a different workload. Check the software’s current requirements and measure the actual load during a representative test instead of choosing a plan from an assumed minimum.

| Choice | What changes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Encode or transcode on the server | The server processes the media and controls the output format. | CPU demand depends on source, output settings, and encoder. Test the intended profile under sustained load. |
| Forward already-encoded media | The server sends prepared media onward rather than performing the same encoding workload. | Confirm your chosen software and source format support this workflow; do not assume every file can be forwarded as-is. |
| Shared CPU or dedicated CPU | Hetzner describes shared CPU as distributing CPU usage rights among virtual servers and dedicated CPU as providing dedicated CPU resources. | Compare cost and predictable headroom against measured workload. No one plan is established as right for every stream. |
Hetzner’s plan prices depend on server type, and public IP charges are separate. Check its current server overview for the region and configuration you intend to use before committing.
Provision the server and set its firewall
- Create a Cloud server. In Hetzner Cloud, choose a supported Linux image, a region suitable for your operation, and a server configuration based on your encoding test. Attach a Primary IP so the machine can reach the public internet.
- Limit management access. Configure the Cloud Firewall to allow only the inbound management access you need; restrict SSH sources where feasible. Avoid exposing services that the stream does not require.
- Preserve outbound access. Hetzner Cloud Firewalls are stateful. New inbound traffic is dropped unless allowed. New outbound traffic is allowed by default, but when you add custom outbound rules, unmatched outbound traffic is dropped. Ensure the rules still permit DNS and the connection to YouTube’s ingest service. Hetzner Cloud Firewalls
- Update and secure the operating system. Use your normal maintenance process for security updates and administrator access. Keep credentials and the YouTube stream key out of public scripts and repositories.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream or select one you have already configured.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream into the encoder’s connection settings. Follow the selected encoder’s current documentation for where those fields belong; settings and menus may differ by software version.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Store it in a protected configuration or secrets store, not in a public script, repository, or shared chat. Rotate it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Start the encoder, then check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before making the stream public. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes creating or reusing a stream, entering the URL and key, starting the encoder, and checking the preview. YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming
Do not copy a random bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or command line and assume it fits your source. The right output depends on the source file, whether you encode or forward, your software and version, and YouTube’s current recommendations. Confirm those details against the encoder and YouTube documentation you are using.

Keep the broadcast running and observable
A process that starts successfully is not automatically a reliable 24/7 service. Use a process supervisor or container restart policy so an encoder process can be restarted after failure, and configure log rotation so logs do not fill the disk. Add checks and alerts for a stopped process or failed ingest. These are operational recommendations; they are not a guarantee that YouTube will accept or display the stream after every restart.
- Before launch, test the complete source-to-YouTube path and confirm the preview and public watch page behave as intended.
- After startup, listen and watch for audio and picture problems; repeat checks periodically rather than relying only on a running-process indicator.
- Alert an operator when the encoder exits or ingest is lost, and define who is responsible for responding.
- Keep an independent copy of source media and verify any local recordings or saved segments you need.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning
Continuous viewer access and replay retention are separate goals. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams that are less than 12 hours, and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not depend on a single 24-hour broadcast becoming a complete replay. If replay matters, consider controlled sessions comfortably shorter than 12 hours, plan how viewers will experience transitions, and record locally where storage and rights allow. Check each archive after the session. The cited guidance does not guarantee gapless handoffs or a particular session schedule. YouTube: Archive live streams
Clear rights for every part of a devotional feed
YouTube’s live-stream terms say the provider must have the necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a match can lead to a placeholder image, warning, temporary interruption, or termination. Even licensed third-party content may interrupt a stream if the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. The terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” YouTube Terms of Service

For a devotional broadcast, check permissions for each element, not just the central sermon or prayer:
- Worship recordings, backing tracks, and any music performed or played in the feed.
- Artwork, photographs, video footage, and other visual material.
- Scripture translations, readings, and other text where rights may apply.
- Any third-party material embedded in a recording or playlist, including material submitted by contributors.
Permission to perform a song in person does not by itself establish the online recording, synchronization, public performance, territory, continuous-playback, or archive rights needed for this use. License scope depends on the work and agreement; confirm it with the relevant rights holder or qualified counsel.

Understand monetization limits
YouTube’s channel monetization policy applies to live streams as well as other video formats. Its July 15, 2025 clarification places repetitious or mass-produced material under “inauthentic content” and says monetized content should offer original value. A 24/7 format alone does not establish eligibility, and no monetization outcome can be promised. YouTube channel monetization policies
Know what Hetzner’s availability statement does—and does not—cover
Hetzner’s current Cloud and vServer service agreement says it will use commercially reasonable efforts to ensure monthly availability of 99.9% for its Cloud Servers. The measure applies to each individual Cloud Server in a calendar month, has exclusions including customer software or configuration failures and some external network interruptions, and describes Cloud Credits as the remedy subject to the agreement process. It is not a guarantee of YouTube ingest, playback, or end-to-end broadcast availability. Hetzner Cloud and vServer service agreement
Monitoring, a second encoder, local recording, or failover may improve resilience, but each adds operational complexity and potentially duplicate bandwidth or storage costs. The provider availability statement does not define a tested failover design for this use.
Pre-launch checklist
- The server has a working public IP and firewall rules that allow required management access, DNS, and outbound YouTube ingest.
- The selected encoder has been tested with the real source at the intended quality and sustained workload.
- The stream key is protected and the correct stream URL and key are configured.
- The Live Control Room preview, audio, video, and public watch page have been checked.
- A supervisor, logs, disk monitoring, and alerts are in place, with an identified person responsible for response.
- The team has chosen whether it needs shorter sessions for replay archives, local recording, or both.
- Rights are confirmed for music, readings, imagery, and every other third-party element, including any archive use.
