Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can keep a YouTube loop stream running after you disconnect from SSH by running an encoder on an always-on Linode and having Ubuntu’s systemd manage that encoder process. The key caveat: the exact FFmpeg command and systemd unit depend on your media, installed packages, and security setup, so verify them against current FFmpeg and systemd documentation before deploying; no copy-paste configuration is established here. First check YouTube Live eligibility, configure the encoder to YouTube’s requirements, then test the feed and budget outbound transfer.
What runs where
The Linode is the always-on host. An encoder process on Ubuntu reads and loops media you are authorized to broadcast, then sends a live feed to YouTube’s ingestion URL using a stream key. systemd starts and supervises that process, so it is not tied to your interactive SSH session. YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed and provides the preview and stream-health information.
This guide covers the deployment decisions and checks, but does not provide an unverified FFmpeg command or systemd unit file. Exact looping syntax, reconnect behavior, executable path, service user, permissions, and systemd directives must be checked for the Ubuntu and FFmpeg versions you actually install.
Check YouTube eligibility and create the live stream
Before configuring the server, make sure the channel is eligible. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified, must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Review the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility and restrictions.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Choose the intended visibility and decide whether the stream should be archived.
- In the stream’s settings, copy the current ingest URL and stream key. Keep the key secret: it is a credential that lets an encoder send a feed to your stream.
- Prefer the RTMPS ingest URL when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its setup guidance explains that the URL can be revealed from Stream settings with the lock icon. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection in transit; it does not protect a key exposed in a public file or logs. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance.
Never put a real stream key in screenshots, public configuration files, or examples. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder’s securely stored configuration.
Prepare the Ubuntu Linode
Choose capacity for the actual workload
The server must remain powered on, have enough storage for the source media, and sustain the encoder’s CPU and network workload. Codec, resolution, frame rate, and media complexity affect encoding load; test on the intended host rather than assuming a plan will handle a particular configuration. Viewer geography may inform data-center choice, but it is not a substitute for checking the actual workload.

Install and verify the encoder deliberately
Ubuntu package versions, available FFmpeg builds, and supported input formats can vary. Use current Ubuntu and FFmpeg documentation for the installation method, then verify the executable path and that the installed build supports the input media and YouTube’s chosen output protocol and codecs. Confirm that the service account can read the media and configuration without granting unnecessary access.
Upload only media you are entitled to broadcast, including both video and audio rights. YouTube’s live-stream rules apply to a loop just as they do to other live content; looping a recording does not establish permission to use it.

Set encoder output to YouTube’s requirements
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings as a compatible set. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the exact target rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
| YouTube example at 30 fps | H.264 bitrate | AV1 or H.265 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | 2 Mbps minimum; 6 Mbps recommended |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps minimum; 4 Mbps recommended | 0.3 Mbps minimum; 3 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations and minimums for the stated codec and resolution context, from its help-page table accessed in 2026—not universal settings or a promise of visual quality. Match the chosen bitrate to the resolution, frame rate, and codec, then observe actual stream health and host load. Audio must use AAC or MP3.

Make the encoder independent of your SSH session
systemd is the Ubuntu service manager that can start and supervise a long-running encoder process. The important design is that the service runs under an appropriate account, can access the media and protected configuration, and invokes a verified FFmpeg command. Validate each item against current primary documentation for your installed versions before enabling it:
- The full path to the FFmpeg executable and the service account that runs it.
- Read permissions for source media and any needed write permissions for logs or state.
- Looping syntax appropriate to the specific input and file type.
- Output behavior when the network or YouTube connection drops, and whether the encoder retries as intended.
- How the stream key is supplied without exposing it through public files, shell history, or logs.
- The meaning of each systemd directive, including startup ordering, restart behavior, and shutdown handling.
Do not assume that merely placing an encoder command in a service makes reconnects safe or protects credentials. Test start, stop, failure, and restart behavior while you can still inspect the host and YouTube preview.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start the service and confirm that the encoder process is running and reading the intended media.
- Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for an incoming preview. Check that the expected picture and audio arrive.
- Use representative motion and audio during testing. Inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm the intended public, unlisted, or private visibility and archive behavior.
- Confirm that the service remains active after you disconnect from SSH. Reconnect later to inspect service status and logs, and check the Live Control Room health view.
YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion, checking the preview and stream health, and verifying event accessibility. Do not treat an active process alone as proof that viewers can receive a healthy stream.
Estimate Linode network transfer costs
A 24/7 feed continuously sends data out of the Linode. Approximate media payload transfer as bitrate in bits per second × seconds ÷ 8 to get bytes, then allow for protocol overhead and other traffic. This is arithmetic, not a published provider allowance. For example, use the encoder’s measured output bitrate and the number of seconds it actually streams, rather than a bitrate guessed from resolution alone.
Before choosing a plan, check the current Linode/Akamai transfer terms and estimate your monthly usage. Older community posts cite historical allowances and are not reliable current plan guidance. Also account for workload sizing; a plan that has sufficient transfer allowance may still be unsuitable if its compute capacity cannot encode the selected stream.
Troubleshoot by layer
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No YouTube preview | Input, process, route, or credentials | Confirm the source file is readable, the encoder is running, the ingest URL and key are current, and outbound connectivity works. |
| Preview appears but stream health is poor | Encoder settings or host capacity | Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings with YouTube’s current requirements; inspect host load and health messages. |
| Stream stops when SSH disconnects | Process supervision | Check that the encoder is actually running under systemd rather than in an interactive shell, and inspect service status and logs. |
| Stream fails after a network interruption | Output reconnect behavior | Check the encoder’s configured reconnect behavior and systemd’s restart behavior separately; confirm the key and endpoint remain valid. |
| Permission or file errors | Service account and paths | Verify the configured media path, executable path, and service account’s read/write permissions. |
| Unexpected transfer use | Bitrate or other outbound traffic | Measure the encoder’s actual output bitrate and compare its projected continuous transfer with current provider terms. |
If a stream key may have leaked, reset it in Live Control Room and update the protected service configuration. Do not paste the replacement key into a public issue or log.
