2. Clear rights for the performances and music
Before streaming, establish that the church has the necessary rights for the material it will make available. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have all necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights involving artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants.

For a choir archive, consider the musical works, the recorded performance, and any third-party accompaniment or backing tracks separately; which permissions are needed depends on the material and the church’s agreements. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace an identified stream with a placeholder and interrupt or terminate it if the issue persists. Even licensed content can be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights holder through Content ID. Ask the relevant rights holder or distributor about allowlisting where applicable; licensing alone may not prevent an automated interruption. Computer with streaming software
A computer-based encoder gives the church local control over playback and stream settings. YouTube supports encoder workflows and recommends them for advanced production, but its guidance does not specify a playlist application or guarantee unattended 24/7 operation. The computer, playback software, encoder, and internet connection must keep working for the feed to continue. Test the playlist transition and decide who will monitor the machine and restart the stream if needed.

Dedicated hardware encoder
YouTube describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and says its PlayToStream feature can send prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. Check the seller’s current product configuration and the media workflow you need before buying; the directory entry does not establish a particular setup’s compatibility or uninterrupted operation. YouTube’s encoder directory also describes Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-video service and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live streaming. Those directory descriptions are not an endorsement or proof of uptime. 4. Set bitrate, resolution, and audio to fit the connection
If playback and encoding run at the church, the available upload speed must exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom, since other devices sharing the connection and network interruptions can reduce capacity. Its streaming tips advise testing the connection and monitoring stream health.
For H.264 streams, YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026 recommends these bitrates. They are recommendations, not universal requirements; choose a mode the connection can sustain reliably.

The upload figures in the last column are arithmetic estimates: bitrate divided by 0.8 to leave 20% headroom, before allowing for other network use. Use the encoder’s actual total output bitrate when checking the connection. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance specifies H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. Use the stream key and server details shown in YouTube Studio; keep the key private and reset it if it is exposed.
5. Test the full playlist, then launch and monitor
- Prepare the stream in YouTube Studio. Select the church channel and create an encoder stream or use the existing stream setup. Copy the server URL and stream key into the chosen encoder or service without sharing the key publicly.
- Run an unlisted test with representative material. Include similar movement and audio to the planned stream, and check the YouTube preview, picture, audio level, and stream-health messages.
- Verify the operating path. Confirm that a recording plays to its end, the next playlist item starts as intended, and the stream appears on the expected channel and watch page. For a local setup, check that upload capacity remains adequate while other devices are using the network.
- Assign monitoring and recovery. Make sure someone knows where stream health is shown, how to restart playback or the encoder, and how to contact the service provider or rights holder if an interruption occurs.
- Start with time to spare. YouTube event guidance suggests setting up encoders at least two hours ahead and starting them at least 15 minutes before an event. Treat these as useful preparation intervals, not a guarantee for unattended continuous operation.
During operation, check stream health and listen to the audio as well as watching the picture. A stream can appear active while playback has stalled, the playlist has ended, or sound has failed.

- Live streaming is not available yet: verify the channel and enable live streaming early; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check whether the channel has a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Stream health reports connection trouble: reduce resolution or bitrate, check actual upload capacity, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Pause other heavy uploads and downloads during diagnosis.
- The picture or sound is missing or poor: test the encoder’s H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio settings, confirm the selected input and audio source, then inspect the YouTube preview and stream-health messages.
- The stream stops after a copyright match: review the identified material and contact the relevant rights holder or distributor about the rights and any required Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume that holding a license alone prevents automated interruption.
- The stream remains live but repeats one clip or goes silent: check whether playback has advanced to the next item, whether the playlist is still active, and whether audio is present. For local playback, inspect the computer and encoder; for hosted playback, use the provider’s monitoring and recovery process.
- The stream key may have been exposed: reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder or service with the replacement key.
