You can run a prerecorded or generated YouTube feed from Hetzner Cloud by hosting an encoder on a virtual server, connecting it to YouTube Live with the server URL and stream key, and supervising the encoder so it can recover from failures. The VPS replaces an always-on computer at home; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. How do I set up a 24/7 YouTube live stream on a VPS?
The workflow has three parts: YouTube authorizes live streaming and provides ingest details; a Hetzner Cloud server runs an encoder that reads your media; the encoder sends the feed to YouTube. This guide covers the setup decisions and operational checks. It does not provide a tested FFmpeg command or server-size recommendation: the available official guidance does not establish a particular configuration for Hetzner.
- Enable live streaming on your YouTube channel. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before provisioning a server for a scheduled launch.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy the displayed server URL and stream key into your encoder’s connection settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, replace it in the Live Control Room.
- Choose a Hetzner Cloud location and server. Locations include Falkenstein, Nuremberg, and Helsinki in Europe; Ashburn and Hillsboro in the US; and Singapore in ap-southeast. Singapore is a plausible location to evaluate for creators in India, but no published measurement here establishes the best route from your ISP to Hetzner and onward to YouTube’s ingest edge. - Install an encoder and connect your media source. The encoder runs on the VPS and reads the prerecorded files or generated feed you intend to broadcast. Configure it with YouTube’s server URL, stream key, and compatible output settings. YouTube’s guidance expects a compatible live encoder; it does not endorse a particular FFmpeg or OBS configuration for Hetzner.
- Start with a private or unlisted test. Confirm the feed appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, check stream health, and then make it public when ready. Keep the encoder process supervised, configure a restart policy and health checks, and alert on process failure or loss of output. These are operational practices, not guarantees of end-to-end uptime.
Which Hetzner location and traffic allowance should Indian creators choose?
Compare regions using measured route quality from your network to the server and from the server to YouTube ingestion—not geography alone. Hetzner specifically presents Singapore as relevant to creators in India and nearby markets, but the cited documentation provides no India-to-region latency comparison. Hetzner lists Singapore among its locations.
Estimate outbound traffic from your target bitrate before selecting a plan. Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 0.5–5 TB per month for Singapore CX and CPX Cloud Servers, varying by plan; the cited traffic page was last changed on 2024-05-21, so verify the current allowance for the exact plan when ordering. YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. At a steady 4 Mbps, 30 days of continuous payload is approximately 1.3 TB before protocol overhead, reconnects, other system traffic, and bitrate variation. This is an arithmetic planning estimate, not a provider quote.

Also compare CPU architecture and encoder performance for your chosen codec and resolution, recurring server cost, included outbound traffic, overage charges, support, and your backup and recovery needs. The available sources do not establish a machine size that will encode a particular stream reliably or benchmark server performance.
What encoder settings does YouTube recommend?
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Google’s RTMPS documentation describes the secure ingest protocol. Use the currently displayed ingest details in Live Control Room and check YouTube’s live guidance before launch, since requirements can change.

These bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations for the specified H.264 modes, not a promise that a given VPS can encode them. Choose a rate your server can sustain and your outbound allowance can cover. If you use another listed codec, consult YouTube’s current codec-specific settings rather than applying H.264 figures as if they were universal.
How should you secure and supervise the VPS?
Restrict inbound access
Hetzner says Cloud Firewalls block inbound traffic unless a rule permits it, while outbound traffic is allowed by default when no outbound rules are configured. A push-only encoder generally does not need a video-ingest port open to the public internet. Keep only required management access, restrict SSH appropriately, and avoid opening ports simply because a streaming tutorial uses them. Make failures visible
- Monitor whether the encoder process is running and whether it is producing output.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream status for ingest errors or a missing feed.
- Watch disk space if media or logs are stored on the server, and rotate logs to avoid filling the disk.
- Set alerts for process restarts, prolonged disconnects, and traffic approaching the plan allowance.
- Use a supervisor or service manager to restart the encoder after a process failure, and verify that it can reconnect to YouTube.
Hetzner’s agreement describes commercially reasonable efforts toward 99.9% monthly availability for each Cloud Server. That is not a 24/7 guarantee for the complete chain: your media source, encoder, server, network routes, YouTube ingestion, and public watch page can each fail independently. What will a continuous stream cost, and how do billing and archives work?
Check the live Hetzner Console and regional plan details before provisioning: server prices, plan availability, and included traffic can change. Hetzner’s billing FAQ says a Cloud Server is billed while it exists, including when powered off. Outbound traffic beyond the included amount is charged in 100 MB blocks. Usage notices at 75% and 100% do not stop traffic, so alerts are not a spending cap. Review Hetzner’s billing FAQ and monitor actual egress.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived when sending stops. Do not rely on that automatic behavior to preserve a single uninterrupted broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours as a complete permanent archive. Yes, in the sense that a VPS can host an encoder that repeatedly or continuously sends a prerecorded or generated feed. “24/7” describes the intended operation, not guaranteed uninterrupted service. A process restart can help recover from an encoder crash, but it cannot prevent every server, network, YouTube-ingest, or channel-side interruption. No hands-on test or end-to-end uptime result is established for this setup, so treat it as a system you must monitor and maintain rather than a set-and-forget guarantee.
