To prepare 4K footage for a YouTube playlist, export each video at 1920 × 1080 for standard 16:9 footage, keep its original frame rate, and use YouTube’s SDR upload recommendations: MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, BT.709 color, and 8 Mbps at 24–30 fps or 12 Mbps at 48–60 fps. Keep playlist videos as separate uploads unless you specifically need one continuous file. If by “stream” you mean a real-time YouTube Live broadcast rather than playback of uploaded videos, use live-ingest settings instead; upload and live settings are different.
First decide what “playlist stream” means
A YouTube playlist normally plays videos that have already been uploaded. For that workflow, downscale and export each video as a finished upload, then add the resulting videos to the playlist in the order you want.
A real-time YouTube Live broadcast is different: an encoder sends a live feed to YouTube, which transcodes the incoming stream into playback formats. Use YouTube’s live encoder recommendations for that workflow, not the upload bitrates below. YouTube also says its low-latency improvement is unavailable for 4K live streams.
Choose the right 1080p frame
For standard 16:9 footage
Set the output to 1920 × 1080. The source 4K UHD frame is 3840 × 2160, so this halves each dimension. Downscaling changes the output size; it cannot add detail that was not captured in the original.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For other aspect ratios
Preserve the source’s intended proportions. Do not stretch a wider, taller, or portrait video to fill 1920 × 1080: that distorts people and objects. Choose whether to fit the whole picture, crop off edges, or add bars as a creative decision. YouTube’s player adapts to a video’s dimensions and aspect ratio, and its guidance advises against baking padding or black bars into the video because that interferes with dynamic player adaptation.
Export a 4K source as a 1080p YouTube upload
- Make a copy or keep the original. Export to a new file so the 4K source remains available for later edits or a different delivery format.
- Set output dimensions. For 16:9, choose 1920 × 1080. For another aspect ratio, preserve the ratio and decide whether to fit or crop rather than stretch.
- Keep the recorded frame rate. YouTube’s upload guidance says content should be encoded and uploaded at the frame rate at which it was recorded. Do not change 30 fps to 60 fps, or the reverse, merely because the export offers that option.
- Choose SDR upload encoding settings. Use MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and BT.709 color for SDR footage. These settings are recommendations for SDR uploads, not a universal preset for HDR footage.
- Set the recommended video bitrate for the frame rate. For 1080p SDR uploads, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps, and 12 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a requirement that every scene or encoder use exactly that bitrate.
- Check the export before uploading. Confirm the resolution, frame rate, color handling, audio, and beginning and end of the rendered file. Upload the finished 1080p video and add it to your playlist.
YouTube provides separate HDR guidance. If the source is HDR, do not blindly apply SDR BT.709 settings; choose an export workflow that preserves or intentionally converts the source’s HDR color treatment.

Editing 4K footage that plays back poorly
If your computer struggles to edit 4K smoothly, use proxy media as an editing aid. YouTube’s 4K workflow guidance recommends 1080p or 720p proxies for a computer that has difficulty handling 4K. Proxies make editing easier; they are not the final export. Make sure the editor links or syncs the edits back to the original 4K footage when rendering, then explicitly set the final output to 1920 × 1080. YouTube names Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro as examples of editing software, not as required applications.
Keep playlist entries separate or combine clips?
Keep separate uploads when you want playlist entries
Export each video independently and arrange the finished uploads in the YouTube playlist. This preserves separate titles and entries and avoids rendering every clip into one large file.

Join clips only when you need one continuous video
Before joining, check that clips have compatible dimensions, frame rates, audio streams, codecs, and timing. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join files in sequence without re-encoding, but it expects matching streams and time bases; inaccurate file durations can cause gaps or artifacts. When the clips differ and need normalization or re-encoding, FFmpeg’s documentation recommends the concat filter for that case. There is no safe universal command for unknown source files: the right filter and export settings depend on their actual properties.
How much space and upload time will 1080p save?
A 1080p export has fewer pixels per frame than its 4K source, but the final file size depends on duration, frame rate, codec, bitrate, scene complexity, and audio. The recommended bitrate figures above are video bitrates, not a promise of a particular file size. If you need to estimate transfer time before uploading, use the upload-time calculator. YouTube’s 4K workflow guidance also describes transferring source files to an external SSD; that can help manage large originals, but a particular capacity or drive model is not required for downscaling.

Common problems and fixes
- The image looks stretched: Re-export with the source aspect ratio preserved. Fit or crop intentionally; do not force non-16:9 footage into a 16:9 frame.
- The finished video looks soft: Confirm that the export uses the original source, not a low-resolution proxy, and that the output is set to 1920 × 1080. A resize cannot restore source detail that is absent.
- Motion looks uneven: Check that the export frame rate matches the recording. YouTube recommends uploading at the recorded frame rate.
- Color differs from the source: Check whether the footage is HDR or SDR before applying a color-space preset. BT.709 is the cited recommendation for SDR; HDR has separate guidance.
- A combined file has gaps or artifacts: Check clip durations and stream compatibility. If the files do not match in streams or time base, use a workflow that normalizes and re-encodes them rather than assuming a direct concat will work.
- The playlist shows the wrong order: Arrange the uploaded videos in the playlist itself after each export is complete; separate playlist entries do not need to be joined into one file.

Does converting a 4K video to 1080p make it 4K again if I raise the bitrate?
No. A higher bitrate can affect encoding quality and file size, but it does not restore image detail removed by downscaling.
