How to Make FFmpeg Restart a YouTube Radio Stream After a Server Reboot

A systemd service can start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after a crash. Learn how that differs from FFmpeg network reconnects and how to verify YouTube is live.

Run FFmpeg as a boot-enabled Linux service, typically with systemd, and configure the service to restart FFmpeg after an unexpected exit. That handles a server reboot or a crashed process. Separate FFmpeg reconnect or output-recovery options may help with network failures while FFmpeg is still running; they cannot restart a process that the reboot has stopped.

After a restart, check both the service and YouTube: an active FFmpeg process does not by itself prove that the encoder feed, live event, or public watch page is healthy.

Choose the recovery layer for the failure

Failure Recovery mechanism What it does not guarantee
Server reboot or FFmpeg process exit A boot-enabled service manager starts or relaunches FFmpeg. That the input is valid or the YouTube event becomes live.
Supported network-input interruption while FFmpeg remains running FFmpeg protocol reconnect options, when supported by the actual input protocol and installed build. Recovery from a host reboot or every possible disconnect.
Some network-output errors FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt output recovery when configured to do so. Boot-time process supervision or guaranteed recovery from every error. FIFO attempt_recovery is off by default.

Use service supervision for boot and process recovery; consider FFmpeg’s protocol and output-recovery features as additional, distinct layers.

Prepare the host and YouTube encoder settings

Identify the host and FFmpeg details

  • Confirm that the server runs Linux with systemd. Service configuration and directive behavior can vary by distribution, so consult the systemd documentation for the target host.
  • Find the installed FFmpeg binary’s absolute path, the service account that should run it, and the actual source type: for example, a local file or playlist versus a live HTTP radio feed. Their FFmpeg commands are not interchangeable.
  • Confirm the correct YouTube ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup uses both; YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted form of RTMP. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers encoder configuration.

Protect the stream key

Treat the key as a credential. Keep it out of public scripts, source repositories, and exposed logs, and restrict access to whichever service configuration or protected file supplies it. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the configured value or the encoder will continue trying to authenticate with the old one. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Configure FFmpeg as a boot-enabled service

  1. Build the command for the real source. Use absolute paths for FFmpeg and local media, and configure the correct YouTube URL and key. A file or playlist intended to loop requires different input and looping behavior from a network radio feed. There is no single safe command for every source and installed FFmpeg version, so verify the options against the documentation for your installed build.
  2. Put the command in a service definition or wrapper script. Avoid relying on an interactive shell, the user’s current directory, or environment variables that exist only in a login session. Keep credentials in a location with restricted access.
  3. Set the service to start at boot and restart after an unexpected process exit. Use the service manager’s boot-enabling and restart controls, with a delay and suitable monitoring rather than an unbounded rapid crash loop. A wrong key, invalid input, or broken command will not be fixed by repeated attempts. Check the target distribution’s systemd manual for exact directive semantics.
  4. Enable the service and check its initial state. Use your distribution’s documented systemd commands and inspect the service status and logs. Resolve configuration errors before relying on a reboot test.
  5. Perform a controlled reboot. When the host returns, confirm that the service is active and review its logs for startup errors or repeated restarts.

Add reconnect behavior for network interruptions

FFmpeg documents protocol options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max. Their applicability depends on the input protocol and the installed FFmpeg build; do not assume every option applies to every radio source. Consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation and verify supported options locally.

These retries address supported connection failures while FFmpeg is running. If the process has exited or the machine has rebooted, the service manager—not a protocol retry—must start it again.

Consider output recovery separately

For some output failures, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer supports recovery attempts and configurable retry timing and limits. Its attempt_recovery option is off by default, and recovery is not guaranteed for every error. Read the FFmpeg Documentation for the FIFO muxer before adding it to an output command. FIFO output recovery complements service supervision; it does not replace it.

Verify the YouTube event after the reboot

  1. In the service manager, confirm FFmpeg is active and inspect the logs for input, authentication, or output errors.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the encoder preview and stream health. Confirm the ingest URL and key are still current.
  3. Check the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings rather than assuming an FFmpeg restart will start or preserve the event.
  4. Open the viewer-facing watch page and confirm that it is actually live and playing. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its encoder setup guidance.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is an archive statement, not a promise that a 24/7 event will remain uninterrupted or resume in a particular state after a reboot. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common restart failures

Symptom Likely area to check Next step
FFmpeg does not start after reboot Boot enablement, service definition, binary path, permissions, or assumptions about the interactive shell. Check the service manager’s status and logs; validate absolute paths and the service account’s access to the command and media.
The service repeatedly starts and exits Invalid input, incorrect command options, inaccessible media, or a rejected stream key. Read the FFmpeg and service logs, correct the underlying failure, and avoid an unbounded rapid restart loop.
FFmpeg remains active but the radio source is silent or disconnected Input protocol behavior or a source-side interruption. Confirm the source type and protocol, then verify that the relevant reconnect options are supported by the installed build.
FFmpeg is active but YouTube is not receiving a healthy feed Ingest URL, key, output connection, or event configuration. Check credentials and output logs, then inspect encoder preview and health in Live Control Room.
Live Control Room shows a feed but the public page is not live Event state or auto-start/auto-stop configuration. Check the event controls and viewer-facing watch page; do not treat a running process as proof of a live event.
