Stream copy avoids re-encoding only when the inputs have matching streams, codecs and time bases; if they do not, normalize or re-encode instead. Check the joins before uploading the finished video to YouTube.
Choose the right workflow
The concat demuxer joins files in playlist order. Repeating one filename makes a longer file with repeated copies of that recording; it does not create an indefinitely live YouTube stream. Use stream copy when the inputs are compatible and you want to avoid re-encoding. If they are not compatible, or the joins have timing problems, use a re-encoding workflow with FFmpeg’s concat filter.
- One recording repeated: list the same file once per desired pass.
- Several recordings in sequence: list each file in the desired order, repeating entries as needed.
- Incompatible inputs or bad joins: normalize the media or use the concat filter and re-encode.
Create a concat playlist
- Put the source and playlist in a working folder. Use simple relative filenames when possible. Save the playlist as plain text, for example
list.txt. - Add the concat marker and one file directive for each pass. To repeat
service.mp4three times, the playlist should be:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'service.mp4' file 'service.mp4' file 'service.mp4' - Keep the marker exact.
ffconcat version 1.0must be the first line, with no extra spaces or byte-order mark, for automatic recognition. Quote or escape filenames containing spaces or special characters.
Render the repeated video
For compatible inputs, run this from the folder containing list.txt and the source file:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 1 -i list.txt -c copy service-looped.mp4-f concat selects the concat demuxer, -i list.txt supplies its playlist, and -c copy copies the streams without re-encoding. The demuxer workflow requires the inputs to have the same streams, codecs and time bases.

-safe 1 is appropriate for safe relative paths. If absolute paths fail the safety checks, -safe 0 may be needed; use it only with a playlist you control. FFmpeg’s documentation warns that inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts, and differences in stream lengths can create timestamp gaps.
Make an indefinitely repeated FFmpeg operation
A playlist with a fixed number of entries produces a finite file. For an FFmpeg operation that should loop an input indefinitely, use -stream_loop -1 before the relevant input. To stop a render at a target duration, use the output option -t with the desired duration. These options change the FFmpeg operation; they do not turn a rendered file into a live YouTube broadcast.

When to re-encode instead of copying streams
Do not assume that files can be joined cleanly just because they all play individually. The concat demuxer is intended for inputs with matching streams, codecs and time bases. When those properties differ, or a test output has timing or continuity problems, normalize the inputs or use the concat filter and re-encode. FFmpeg identifies the concat filter as the recommended route when re-encoding is needed.
Check the output before uploading
- Confirm that the output duration matches the number of intended passes.
- Play across every join, not just the beginning and end. Listen for gaps, abrupt cuts or audio discontinuities.
- Check for timing artifacts. Inaccurate duration metadata and streams of different lengths can cause join problems.
- If a join is faulty, verify stream compatibility and timing before making the YouTube upload; use a normalized, re-encoded output if stream copy is unsuitable.
Upload and publish in YouTube Studio
YouTube’s upload-encoding guidance lists MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan and AAC-LC among suggested settings, and recommends matching the recorded frame rate, using a 48 kHz audio sample rate and BT.709 for SDR. YouTube says its detailed recommended settings are for partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager, so treat them as guidance rather than universal upload requirements. Uploading and publishing are separate steps: uploading imports the file, while publishing makes it available to viewers. Processing time varies with quality, length, format and traffic. Review the processed video, then choose its visibility and publication timing in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s video upload instructions.
Copyright and reused-content checks for church recordings
Before uploading, confirm that your church has permission for the music, performances, readings or other material captured in the recording. A service recording can include copyrighted songs even when the service itself is original. Repeating a recording does not change the rights status of its contents. Check YouTube’s copyright guidance and any applicable permissions or licenses before making the video public. Also make sure the upload complies with YouTube’s policies; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions.
