To turn an internet radio stream into a 24/7 YouTube video with a waveform, combine the station’s audio with a visualizer scene, encode the result, and send it to YouTube Live. OBS offers a graphical setup; FFmpeg can run from a server for unattended operation. Before going live, confirm you have the necessary rights to rebroadcast the audio and that your YouTube channel is eligible to livestream.
What you need
The setup has three parts: an internet radio audio source, a video scene that displays a waveform reacting to that audio, and an encoder that sends the combined video-and-audio feed to YouTube Live.
- Radio audio: A stream URL or another supported way to receive the station audio. You must have permission to rebroadcast it.
- Waveform visual: A visualizer that analyzes the same audio sent to YouTube. A static image or looping video can fill the rest of the scene.
- Encoder: OBS for a graphical desktop workflow, or FFmpeg for a command-line workflow.
- YouTube channel: It must meet YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
A third-party guide published May 29, 2026, describes using an OBS Browser source with a local HTML visualizer, or combining audio and video with FFmpeg. Treat those as architecture examples, not tested or officially endorsed visualizer configurations: the exact browser visualizer, compatibility, and FFmpeg command depend on your setup.
Choose OBS or FFmpeg
| Consideration | OBS on a computer | FFmpeg on a server |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Graphical scene composition and interactive controls. | Command-line configuration and process management. |
| Where it runs | A computer with a desktop session. | An always-on VPS is one option for unattended operation; it is not a YouTube requirement. |
| Waveform | A Browser source loading a visualizer is one proposed route; compatibility is not established. | Requires a suitable video-composition and filter pipeline; no verified waveform command is established here. |
| Operational tradeoff | Easier to inspect visually, but the computer and session need to remain available. | Can run as a background process, but requires command-line setup and monitoring. |
| Comparative performance | No comparative uptime or CPU measurements are established. | No comparative uptime or CPU measurements are established. |
Check music rights and YouTube eligibility
Do this before building the broadcast. An internet radio stream being publicly available does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it on YouTube. You need the rights required for the music and other content in every territory where the stream may be available.

YouTube’s livestream terms state that the broadcaster represents and warrants having the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content. A stream may be interrupted or terminated if such content remains; even licensed content can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and, where applicable, ask the rights holder about allowlisting.
Your channel must also be verified and free of live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Confirm current eligibility in YouTube Help before scheduling an unattended broadcast.

Build the broadcast in OBS
- Prepare the scene. In OBS, create a scene with a background image or looping video. Add a Browser source for a waveform visualizer that can access the same radio audio you plan to broadcast. The implementation guide proposes a local HTML visualizer, but does not establish a particular compatible tool; verify your chosen visualizer’s audio input and behavior before relying on it.
- Add the radio audio. Configure an audio input or capture path that receives the station stream. Check that the waveform responds to that audio and that the audio is audible in OBS’s meters. Prevent unintended duplication if the same audio is captured through more than one source.
- Set up YouTube as the destination. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and use the encoder connection details YouTube provides. In OBS, select YouTube as the service or configure the destination using YouTube’s current encoder instructions. OBS’s YouTube streaming guide can help with the OBS-side workflow, but use YouTube’s current recommendations for output settings.
- Choose sustainable output settings. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises choosing settings your connection can reliably sustain; there is no universally correct bitrate for every connection and video format.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. YouTube describes stream keys as the credentials that identify where an encoder sends its feed and enable YouTube to accept it. Do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or expose it in a shared command or configuration file. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Test before committing to 24/7. Confirm the audio is present, the waveform responds, the video is visible in YouTube’s live control room, and the connection remains stable. Test the complete chain—including the radio source and visualizer—before leaving the computer unattended.
- Keep the computer and session running. OBS on a computer depends on that machine and its desktop session remaining available. Plan for power, network interruptions, software restarts, and monitoring rather than assuming the encoder will recover from every failure.
Run it with FFmpeg on a server
FFmpeg is an alternative if you are comfortable managing a command-line process. The general design is to read the radio audio, combine it with a video source that contains the waveform, encode the result, and publish it to YouTube. A VPS can keep the process running without a desktop session, but it adds server administration and does not remove the need to monitor the source, encoder, connection, and YouTube output.
- Choose an audio input and waveform pipeline. Confirm that FFmpeg can receive your station’s audio format and that your video composition can analyze that same audio. A still image or loop alone will not create a live waveform; the visual component must react to the audio.
- Build and validate the combined output. Configure the relevant FFmpeg inputs, filters, video and audio encoders, and output destination for your environment. No production-ready waveform command or verified filter chain is established here, so do not copy an unvalidated command into a 24/7 service.
- Use YouTube’s current output requirements. Configure the encoder for YouTube’s recommended protocol and settings, using its encoder settings page as the authority for bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. Keep the stream key secret.
- Make the process observable and recoverable. Run it under a service manager or another process supervisor appropriate to your server, capture logs, and arrange a way to check whether audio, waveform, and YouTube ingest are still working. A process that remains alive can still be sending silent audio, a frozen visual, or no valid feed.
- Test failure and restart behavior. Verify what happens when the radio source disconnects, the network drops, or FFmpeg exits. Recovery behavior depends on your configuration; do not assume that a VPS or encoder automatically reconnects correctly.
Plan for archives separately from live continuity
A continuous live broadcast is not guaranteed to become one complete replay. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need an archive, record locally and plan how to divide, store, and publish recordings independently. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube will not accept the broadcast: Check channel verification and live-stream eligibility, confirm there is no active restriction, and verify that the encoder is using the current stream key and destination details.
- The stream is live but has no sound: Check the radio source connection, OBS or FFmpeg audio meters/logs, and the audio track being sent to YouTube. Make sure the visualizer is not the only component receiving the audio.
- The waveform is flat or frozen: Confirm that the visualizer is analyzing the same audio input that reaches the encoder. A background image or looping video does not become an audio-reactive waveform by itself.
- The broadcast drops or buffers: Check the stability of the network and radio source, then lower output demands if the connection cannot reliably sustain them. Follow YouTube’s guidance rather than treating a third-party bitrate as a universal target.
- The stream is interrupted for copyright: Review YouTube’s notice and contact the relevant rights holder. A license may not prevent automated interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted where required.
- The long-running broadcast has no complete replay: This can happen when the live stream exceeds 12 hours. Keep a separate local recording if preservation matters.
- The server process is running but viewers see a broken feed: Check logs and inspect the actual YouTube output. A running process does not prove that the audio source, waveform, encoding, and ingest are all healthy.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded radio program or other uploaded video, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live radio URL or creating a waveform from a live audio feed, so it is not a replacement for the OBS or FFmpeg waveform setup above.
