A black screen during an MP4 handoff is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The interruption may begin in the file-switching source, the encoder, or YouTube’s ingest path. First check whether the encoder preview also goes black; that tells you which part of the path to investigate.
Find where the picture disappears
Compare the encoder’s preview with the YouTube playback at the same moment. This is a practical way to isolate the stage where the interruption first appears, not a documented YouTube diagnostic procedure.
- The encoder preview also goes black: Investigate the source handoff. Confirm that both MP4s are available and playable, check whether the source restarts between files, and look for a moment when the active video disappears.
- The encoder preview stays normal, but YouTube shows black: Investigate the outgoing encoder and ingest path rather than assuming the MP4 itself is faulty.
During a transition, note whether audio continues, how long the picture is absent, and whether it happens at every file change. Also record how the files are switched—such as by a playlist, scene, script, or process restart—and whether the stream uses RTMP or HLS. Those details help distinguish a source interruption from an output or ingest problem; without them, the exact cause cannot be established.
Check the file handoff and media format
Verify that each MP4 plays through the transition point and that the switching method does not briefly leave the scene without an active video source. If the encoder or source process is restarted for each file, check whether it resumes producing usable frames promptly. These are diagnostic possibilities, not evidence that MP4 files inherently cause black screens when changed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS notes that MP4 and MOV files require finalization; an interrupted write can leave such a file unrecoverable. OBS describes HLS differently: it uses separate TS files, with a playlist that tells a player how to read them. These format behaviors make it sensible to check how files are produced and handed off, but they do not establish that a completed MP4 is the cause of a blackout. OBS format guidance.
Apply HLS checks only if the stream uses HLS
Do not assume that an MP4-based stream is using HLS. If it is, compare the actual outgoing segments and playlist with YouTube’s HLS requirements:

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- YouTube Help specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST or PUT for delivery. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.
- YouTube’s developer guide specifies muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and support for frame rates up to 60 fps for HLS ingestion. See the HLS ingestion guide.
These are protocol-specific requirements. If the stream uses a different ingest method, do not apply HLS segment or playlist rules to it.
Inspect encoder settings without assuming they are the cause
Check that the encoder keeps its output format and keyframe interval consistent across the handoff. OBS says a consistent keyframe interval can help YouTube’s automatic quality selector transition smoothly between quality options. That makes it a reasonable setting to inspect, not a proven fix for a black screen at an MP4 change. See OBS transcoding guidance.

Compare behavior across transitions rather than changing several settings at once. If only one file or one type of handoff triggers the problem, that pattern is more useful than a general assumption that all MP4s, keyframes, or hardware are responsible.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- Preview and YouTube both go black: Check whether the source remains active, whether the next file is accessible and playable, and whether the switching method restarts or blanks the source.
- Only YouTube goes black: Check the encoder’s outgoing video and the ingest protocol. If using HLS, inspect the segment format, segment duration, playlist, and transport against YouTube’s published requirements.
- Audio continues but video disappears: Record the duration and whether this happens at every transition. This narrows the symptom but does not, by itself, identify the failed component.
- The blackout is brief and repeatable at every change: Focus on the handoff and whether the source or encoder momentarily stops producing video.
- The blackout is inconsistent or limited to certain files: Confirm those files play correctly and compare their output characteristics with files that switch cleanly.
Keep a short log of the file being switched, time of the blackout, preview behavior, audio behavior, duration, switching method, and ingest protocol. That record gives you concrete evidence to use when reviewing the configuration or seeking support.

What is—and is not—established about kids’ streams
The available technical guidance does not establish a kids-specific YouTube behavior that causes a black screen during an MP4 handoff. It also does not identify a universal hardware purchase that resolves the symptom. Treat the transition as a source, encoder, or ingest troubleshooting problem unless evidence from the stream points elsewhere.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The DIY diagnosis above remains useful for identifying what is happening in an existing setup; using a cloud service does not prove the cause of a particular blackout.
