If FFmpeg stays on “connecting” when streaming to YouTube from a Hetzner Cloud server, check the active YouTube stream URL and key first, then verify RTMPS and outbound firewall access. Only after the connection reaches YouTube should you troubleshoot video and audio settings. A particular cause cannot be identified without your sanitized command, FFmpeg build details, logs, and firewall rules.
1. Copy the endpoint and key for the active YouTube broadcast
Open YouTube Live Control Room for the broadcast you are starting and use the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. A stale key or an endpoint copied from another broadcast can prevent the encoder from starting. YouTube’s third-party encoder troubleshooting advises getting a stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder when startup fails.
- Confirm you are looking at the intended broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Copy its current stream URL and key into the corresponding FFmpeg output settings.
- If startup still fails, refresh or select the correct key in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Keep the key secret. Redact it from commands, screenshots, and logs before sharing them for help.
2. Verify RTMPS, the hostname, and port 443
For YouTube RTMPS, preserve the hostname supplied by Live Control Room and use the rtmps scheme, not rtmp. Google documents RTMPS on port 443 and hostname-based SNI during TLS authentication. If your encoder requires an explicit port, try :443. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide and YouTube’s encoder connection troubleshooting.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use the destination shown for the selected broadcast; do not substitute a hostname from an unrelated command example.
- Check that the URL scheme, hostname, and port agree with the endpoint provided by YouTube.
- If YouTube reports a connection timeout or SSL error, investigate the endpoint and network path rather than changing video bitrate as a first response.
3. Inspect the Hetzner Cloud Firewall’s outbound rules
Check the firewall attached to the server, not just inbound access settings. Hetzner documents that outbound NEW connections are allowed by default when there are no custom firewall rules. Once custom rules are present, outbound NEW connections are dropped unless explicitly allowed; established and related traffic is handled separately. See Hetzner Cloud Firewalls.
- In the Hetzner Cloud Console, open the server and inspect its attached firewall and outbound rules.
- If custom rules are configured, allow outbound traffic for the protocol and port required by the YouTube endpoint you are using. For RTMPS, that means TCP port 443.
- Do not assume an inbound allow rule permits an outbound connection. Check the direction of the rule.
- Apply the narrowest rule that allows the required egress, then retry the stream.
4. Confirm the FFmpeg build and output command
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP URL syntax and publishing through the FLV muxer, but documentation cannot confirm what a particular installed binary supports or whether a specific command is valid. Check the installed build, the output URL, and the output mapping and muxer. FFmpeg documents its protocols at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-protocols.html.

- Confirm the FFmpeg binary actually installed on the Hetzner server is the one your service or shell invokes.
- Verify that the output destination is the current YouTube endpoint and that the command uses an appropriate output format and stream mapping.
- Review the complete FFmpeg stderr for the failed attempt, after redacting the stream key and other secrets.
- Record the FFmpeg version and build configuration. These, together with the sanitized command and logs, are needed to diagnose command-specific failures.
5. Distinguish a failed connection from poor stream health
“Connecting” can describe a transport failure, while YouTube’s stream-health warnings concern media arriving at the service. If the connection never establishes, investigate the endpoint, firewall egress, DNS, and TLS path. If YouTube receives data but reports poor health or the preview is not playable, inspect encoder output, error messages, CPU load, and outbound connectivity, then check media settings.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance covers encoder output, CPU load, and network connection. Its live encoder settings guidance recommends H.264, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and keyframe intervals no longer than four seconds. These settings can help with media delivery; they do not establish or repair a TCP/TLS connection that never reaches YouTube. YouTube says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

6. Consider HLS only when you have a protocol requirement
HLS is not a general workaround for an unexplained RTMPS timeout. YouTube documents HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, provided the encoder supports HLS. HLS delivers segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream and has higher latency. Use it when that compatibility need applies, not simply because a connection is stuck. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.
Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | First checks | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg remains connecting or times out | Active stream URL and key; RTMPS scheme, hostname, and port; Hetzner outbound rules | The encoder may not be establishing the connection to YouTube. |
| YouTube reports an SSL error | RTMPS endpoint, hostname preservation for SNI, and port 443 | Check TLS endpoint details before changing media settings. |
| Custom Hetzner firewall is attached | Outbound NEW rule for the endpoint’s required port |
Custom rules drop outbound new connections unless allowed. |
| YouTube receives data but flags stream health | FFmpeg output and errors, CPU load, network, codecs, CBR, and keyframe interval | The connection may be established; investigate media quality separately. |
| Logs do not identify the failure | Sanitized command and stderr, FFmpeg build, redacted endpoint details, firewall rules, DNS/TLS/connectivity results, and Live Control Room status | There is not enough information to identify a specific root cause yet. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than debugging a self-managed FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
