Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can run FFmpeg in a Docker container to send a church video feed to YouTube Live, and configure Docker to restart the container after certain failures or host restarts. That does not guarantee the YouTube stream is healthy: you still need a valid stream URL and key, a tested upload connection, monitoring, and a plan for YouTube stream-session boundaries. This guide covers the DIY setup and its limits.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room and a created or scheduled stream.
- A Docker-capable host that can remain powered on and connected to the internet, or a server you administer.
- A video file or other FFmpeg input, plus a stable upload connection sized for the selected output bitrate.
- A plan for checking both the container and the audience-facing stream, including someone who can respond to alerts or interruptions.
The host might be an existing church computer, a dedicated small computer, or a VPS/cloud server. Compare the hardware and administration burden with network reliability, recurring cost, and who can respond when something fails. A dedicated mini PC is not a requirement; test the actual workload and connection before buying or committing to a host.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup workflow to obtain the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Choose the RTMPS server URL when available. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP secured with TLS/SSL and explains where to reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not commit it to a public or shared source repository, paste it into public issue reports, or print it in logs. Store it in a protected environment file or secret-management facility, restrict access to the file, and rotate the key in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Start FFmpeg and inspect YouTube’s preview before relying on the stream. Confirm that the intended video and audio appear and that Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream.
Use the exact ingest URL provided for the stream rather than guessing its path or switching protocols by editing the URL. FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS URL behavior in its protocol documentation.
Choose a format and bitrate the connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, H.264 video with AAC audio and CBR is a common compatible starting point. Use the codec and settings that your installed FFmpeg build supports; YouTube’s detailed guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| Output target | YouTube-recommended H.264 ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed recommendations, not a measurement of your church’s available bandwidth or a requirement to use one of these targets. Choose a rate that the actual upload link can sustain with headroom for normal variation and other network use. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Run a sustained test from the host’s network and monitor stream health during a representative test with the audio and motion you expect to broadcast.
Run FFmpeg in Docker
The example below shows the shape of an FFmpeg command and Docker launch, not a ready-made image or a universal input configuration. Supply an image that contains FFmpeg, select the correct input for your file or capture source, and verify that its FFmpeg build includes the needed codecs and RTMPS support. Image names, device access, and input syntax depend on the host and image you choose.

docker run -d
--name church-stream
--restart unless-stopped
--env-file /path/to/protected/stream.env
YOUR_FFMPEG_IMAGE
ffmpeg -re -i /media/program.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
In this illustrative command, the 8 Mbps video rate and 30 fps are an example for a 720p30 target, while the input file determines the actual picture dimensions unless you add an explicit scaling filter. The two-second GOP is represented by 60 frames at 30 fps. Match the GOP to the actual output frame rate; for example, 60 fps requires 120 frames for a two-second interval. Validate the command and options against the FFmpeg version and image you deploy.
Place the URL and key in a root-readable environment file outside source control, with entries such as YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL=... and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY=.... Protect the file with restrictive permissions, and be aware that environment variables may be visible to users with sufficient host or Docker access. Use a Docker secret or another protected secret mechanism where available. Do not echo the expanded command or secret values into routine logs.

For continuous playback of a file, -re reads at the input’s native rate rather than sending the file as quickly as possible. This command sends one input; looping, playlists, file changes, and recovery from input exhaustion require additional FFmpeg logic or a supervisor design. Test those transitions deliberately rather than assuming the container will start the next program by itself.
Configure restarts without mistaking them for monitoring
Docker’s restart policies act on container exit and Docker daemon restart conditions. Docker documents unless-stopped and always in Start containers automatically. unless-stopped is often a reasonable unattended-service starting point: Docker restarts the container after an exit and after daemon restarts, while preserving an intentional manual stop. always differs in how a manually stopped container is treated when the daemon restarts.

A restart policy is not high availability, and it does not establish that viewers can see or hear the program. FFmpeg can remain running while the input is frozen, the output is rejected, or the connection is impaired. Check both layers:
- On the host, inspect container state with
docker psand recent output withdocker logs --tail 100 church-stream. - In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the preview and stream-health indicators, not just whether Docker reports the container as running.
- Arrange a human check or external alert for missing picture, missing audio, a stopped stream, or an unhealthy ingest status. Docker status alone cannot detect all of these.
FFmpeg’s output FIFO can be configured to attempt recovery from temporary failures, including the documented options -attempt_recovery 1 and -recovery_wait_time 1. Evaluate the feature in the deployed build and test how it behaves with your input and YouTube connection; it is not a promise of uninterrupted delivery. See the recovery example in the FFmpeg documentation.

Plan for YouTube’s stream lifecycle and church content rights
One running container is not an unlimited single archive
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its documentation does not establish that an indefinitely running stream will remain one continuously archived video. Treat the 24/7 goal as a service objective, and plan stream creation, scheduling, operator checks, and any required session transitions separately from keeping Docker alive. Review YouTube’s current stream setup guidance at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Check music and other third-party material before unattended use
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a matching stream can be replaced by a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated. If the church has a license for material, that alone may not prevent automated interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm permissions and allowlisting for music, recordings, and other third-party material before leaving a stream unattended. See Copyright issues with live streams.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no feed | Wrong server URL or key, RTMP/RTMPS mismatch, blocked outbound path, or unsupported protocol in the FFmpeg build. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the selected protocol and network access, then inspect FFmpeg’s startup error without exposing the key. |
| Container repeatedly exits and restarts | Invalid input path, unsupported codec, malformed options, missing media mount, or another FFmpeg startup error. | Read docker logs church-stream, verify mounted file paths and permissions, and test the command interactively with a non-live destination before restarting the service. |
| Docker says “Up,” but the stream is frozen or unhealthy | The process may still be alive despite a stalled input or rejected/unhealthy output. | Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s preview/health status; build a separate health check or human alert rather than relying only on restart policy. |
| Video or audio stutters | Upload capacity is insufficient or variable, encoding load is too high, or the input itself is problematic. | Test sustained upload from the host, leave bandwidth headroom, reduce output bitrate or resolution, and confirm CPU and input stability. |
| Stream is interrupted despite a valid technical setup | YouTube may have detected third-party content or the stream may have reached a planned lifecycle boundary. | Review Live Control Room notices, rights and Content ID allowlisting, and the church’s schedule for stream-session transitions. |
