Fix FFmpeg Reconnect Errors When Pushing a YouTube Stream from Linode

HTTP reconnect flags do not guarantee recovery for an RTMP/RTMPS publishing failure. Trace the disconnect, verify YouTube’s endpoint and ingest settings, then test Linode’s outbound path.

Start by finding out whether FFmpeg lost its input or its YouTube output connection. The familiar FFmpeg -reconnect options are documented for HTTP; they should not be assumed to recover a YouTube publishing connection over RTMP or RTMPS. Check the output URL and protocol, the exact error, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before changing settings. The available evidence does not establish a Linode-specific reconnect bug or a universal Linode firewall fix.

Diagnose which side of FFmpeg disconnected

An FFmpeg command can read media from one input and publish to YouTube through a separate output. A retry setting that applies to the input does not necessarily repair a failed publishing connection. Identify whether the log points to the input, the output, or both before changing flags.

  • Input failure: FFmpeg can no longer read the file, network source, or other input. Investigate that source and its protocol.
  • Output failure: FFmpeg cannot reach or continue sending to YouTube. Check the ingest URL, RTMP/RTMPS connection, outbound network path, and stream health.
  • Unhealthy stream after connection: FFmpeg may still be connected while YouTube reports insufficient or irregular video. Investigate encoding, bitrate, keyframes, source quality, and available upload capacity.

Save the full error lines immediately around a disconnect. Phrases such as “connection reset by peer,” “broken pipe,” “failed to connect to server — connection timed out,” or YouTube’s “not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming” are clues, not standalone diagnoses.

Why HTTP reconnect flags may not fix a YouTube output

FFmpeg documents -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, -reconnect_at_eof, and -reconnect_on_network_error as HTTP protocol options. They can be relevant when an HTTP input needs retry behavior, but YouTube live publishing commonly uses RTMP or RTMPS, a distinct output protocol. Adding HTTP reconnect options does not establish that FFmpeg will resume an RTMP/RTMPS publishing session after a disconnect. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation for protocol-specific behavior.

RTMP carries multimedia over a TCP/IP network; RTMPS adds TLS encryption. Use the protocol and endpoint YouTube provides for the stream rather than guessing or substituting a hostname. Switching schemes without checking the issued URL, FFmpeg build, and network path can introduce a different failure, such as a TLS handshake error.

Work through the connection in order

  1. Capture a safe diagnostic record. Save the complete FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, FFmpeg version and build, the error lines before and after the disconnect, and whether the failure is at input or output. Note whether YouTube Live Control Room reports a stream-health issue. A stream key grants access to the ingest; do not post it in logs, screenshots, or support forums.
  2. Verify the YouTube endpoint and scheme. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and confirm whether the event calls for RTMP or RTMPS. Confirm that the command uses the matching URL and the correct key. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says both the protocol and server should be RTMPS when using that secure endpoint. If an SSL error persists, the guidance recommends confirming both and suggests port 443. Do not treat an example hostname as your actual ingest endpoint.
  3. Check the installed FFmpeg build. If YouTube supplied an RTMPS URL, verify that the FFmpeg build on the Linode instance supports the required TLS connection. A failure during TLS negotiation differs from a disconnect after a publishing session has been established; preserve the corresponding log lines.
  4. Validate the stream settings. Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio codec with YouTube’s current encoder guidance below. Confirm that the selected bitrate fits the available outbound capacity.
  5. Separate encoding trouble from transport trouble. Check FFmpeg’s local log output and CPU load, and inspect the source or a local recording if available. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes unhealthy encoder output from a healthy encoder preview: the former points toward the source, encoder, or system; the latter makes the outbound connection worth investigating.
  6. Test the Linode egress path for this endpoint. From the VM, test connectivity to the actual ingest host and port from the Live Control Room URL. Inspect the instance’s configured firewall and network rules, and verify that the required outbound connection is reachable. Which port and rules apply depends on the endpoint and environment; the available evidence does not establish Linode-wide defaults, restrictions, or a single Linode-side fix.
  7. Retest with monitoring enabled. YouTube recommends testing before a stream with representative motion and audio, then monitoring stream health and messages. Change one relevant variable at a time and retain the logs so the original failure remains diagnosable.

Check YouTube’s current ingest settings

YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.

H.264 stream format YouTube recommended ingest bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommendations in its current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026—not a measured minimum for a particular Linode instance or proof of what caused a disconnect. Match bitrate to the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, and leave capacity for network variation. Test upload capacity rather than assuming that a server plan’s advertised bandwidth guarantees a stable route to the ingest endpoint.

Troubleshoot by symptom

“Connection reset by peer” or “broken pipe” during output

These messages indicate that the publishing connection ended, but do not by themselves identify whether YouTube, the network path, or another component closed it. Confirm the actual output URL and scheme, check YouTube’s stream-health messages, and test outbound reachability from the VM. Do not expect HTTP reconnect flags to restart an RTMP/RTMPS output.

“Failed to connect to server — connection timed out”

Check for a copied or stale ingest URL, a mismatch between RTMP and RTMPS, unsupported TLS in the FFmpeg build, and outbound reachability to the actual host and port. Inspect the VM’s configured egress rules. The timeout alone does not prove that Linode blocked the connection.

SSL or TLS error with RTMPS

Re-copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and confirm that both the scheme and server are correct. Check that the installed FFmpeg build can negotiate TLS. YouTube suggests port 443 if an SSL error persists; use the port appropriate to the endpoint and the VM’s network policy rather than changing ports without checking.

YouTube connects but says it is not receiving enough video

Check the encoder’s output, CPU load, source playback, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and a bitrate appropriate to the chosen codec and video format. Compare YouTube’s health indication with FFmpeg’s local logs to distinguish irregular encoding from interrupted delivery.

The stream runs briefly, then drops

Correlate the exact disconnect time with FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s health messages. If the encoder preview is healthy, test the outbound route and check network rules; if the output is already unhealthy, investigate the source, encoding, and system load first. Retest with representative content while monitoring rather than changing several settings at once.
