You can run encoder software on a Google Cloud virtual machine (VM) to send prerecorded sermons to a YouTube Live stream around the clock. First make sure the channel is eligible for live streaming, then create a YouTube stream, connect the VM-based encoder using the stream URL and private stream key, and test video, audio, monitoring, and recovery before relying on it. A VM does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery, and the right machine and total cost depend on your media, region, and resilience needs.
Before setting up the VM, make sure the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so check that the feature is active before preparing a continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
How the VM-to-YouTube workflow fits together
The sermon files are the source, encoder software on the VM sends the feed, and YouTube Live receives and distributes it. YouTube supports software encoders; OBS is one listed option, though the workflow does not require OBS specifically or a hardware encoder. The VM must be able to access the media files and make an outbound connection to YouTube.
- Prepare the channel: confirm verification, restrictions, and live-stream activation.
- Create the YouTube stream: in Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and identify its stream URL and key.
- Make media available to the VM: arrange for the sermon files to be accessible to the encoder, and choose a network setup that allows outbound connectivity.
- Configure the encoder: enter YouTube’s stream URL and key, select an appropriate ingest protocol and media settings, and start with a short test.
- Check the whole operation: verify the preview and playback, monitor stream health and audio/video, and test what happens if the connection or encoder stops.
YouTube’s encoder overview is at Set up your encoder for live streaming. Exact interface labels can change; use the current Live Control Room controls for the selected stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream, then use its stream URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube allows a custom reusable key through stream settings. The key is a credential, not ordinary configuration text: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it out of public scripts, shell history, logs, source control, and screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings. Details are in Manage live stream settings.
Prepare Google Cloud networking and media access
The VM needs access to the sermon recordings and outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Google Cloud documents assigning an external IP and using Cloud NAT for IPv4 outbound access when a VM does not have an external IP. Which design is appropriate depends on the project’s security and networking requirements; see Google Cloud’s external IP address documentation and Cloud NAT overview.

Do not pick a machine type from the word “24/7” alone. The workload differs depending on whether the encoder must transcode the sermon or can send already encoded media, and on the video’s resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and storage needs. The official guidance available here does not validate a specific VM type, FFmpeg command, or service-manager configuration for continuous playback.
Set the encoder to YouTube’s ingest recommendations
Use the current YouTube encoder settings table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. For 1080p at 30 frames per second, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps for H.264. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Recommendations for other formats differ, so consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than extrapolating from the 1080p30 figures.

Choose RTMPS when the encoder supports it
Use the RTMPS stream URL shown in Live Control Room if your encoder supports RTMPS. RTMPS is RTMP protected with TLS/SSL. Copy the endpoint supplied for the stream instead of assuming a URL, and enter the stream key in the encoder’s designated secret field. YouTube explains the protocol and stream connection in its encoder connection guidance.
Test the stream and plan for interruptions
Do not treat a successful encoder start as proof that the channel can run continuously. Before making the stream public, check the Live Control Room preview and actual playback, listen for audio problems, inspect video quality and stream health, and verify that your monitoring will alert someone to a failure. Test the recovery or backup procedure by deliberately exercising it before depending on the stream. YouTube recommends testing the setup and checking quality during broadcasts; its guidance also covers failover and, where local archives are used, verifying archive integrity and growth. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Google Cloud and YouTube do not promise that this particular VM-and-encoder setup will remain uninterrupted. Decide who will respond to alerts, how the encoder will be restarted, and what the church will do if the VM, network path, or ingest connection fails. The exact recovery configuration depends on the chosen encoder and deployment.

Google Cloud lists data transfer from a Google Cloud VM to YouTube as no charge under the network pricing category. That does not make the deployment free: compute, disks, IP addresses or NAT, and other resources can affect the bill. Google Cloud’s sustained-use discount documentation says that an e2-micro VM’s eligible use can be equivalent to the total hours in the current month, while Always Free use does not receive sustained-use discounts. Eligibility and terms should be checked for the account and region; this is not a general estimate of the cost of an encoder deployment. See Sustained use discounts.
Alternative: a managed service for prerecorded YouTube streams
YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as an option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded YouTube videos.
