If OBS loses a playlist, first check what viewers see and whether YouTube is still receiving video and audio. If YouTube is receiving a valid feed, treat the problem as an OBS playback or scene issue; if ingest is offline, use a rehearsed backup encoder or recovery plan. A new stream key does not restore a missing local playlist.
First determine whether the stream is still reaching YouTube
Check the public player and YouTube Live Control Room separately. The player shows the audience-facing result; Live Control Room indicates whether YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and reports stream health. OBS can remain connected while its output has become frozen, silent, blank, or switched to an unintended scene.
- Picture and sound are still arriving: YouTube ingest is working for now. Focus on the OBS playlist, media source, and active scene.
- The picture is wrong, frozen, or blank, or audio is missing: The encoder may still be connected, but the audience is not getting the intended program. Switch to a prepared fallback scene if one is available.
- Live Control Room shows no incoming feed or an ingest problem: Follow the church’s encoder recovery plan or move to a separately prepared backup feed. Do not assume that repairing a playlist alone will restore a disconnected encoder.
For scheduled streams, YouTube’s encoder workflow includes a Live Control Room preview before the event is taken live. YouTube advises checking that preview before starting the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance
Check OBS without disrupting a feed that is still working
Once you know what YouTube is receiving, inspect the OBS setup on the streaming computer. The exact repair depends on the OBS version and on how the playlist is implemented; the available official YouTube guidance does not document a specific OBS playlist repair procedure. Avoid changing several settings at once during a service, especially if the audience is still receiving usable video and audio.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm that the expected playlist or media source is present and that the intended scene is active.
- Check whether the media files and any playlist file are still available at the location OBS expects. A moved, renamed, or unavailable file can leave a source unable to play.
- Record the OBS version and source type before seeking version-specific repair instructions. The cause could be a source state, file path, playlist, or software-version issue; the symptom alone does not establish which one.
- If you can safely switch scenes, use the church’s prepared fallback rather than improvising an untested change while live.
Use the backup feed if the primary encoder is down
A fallback scene with a still announcement slide and appropriate audio can give viewers a useful message while volunteers recover OBS. If the primary encoder has stopped sending a usable feed, an independently prepared backup encoder may be the stronger continuity option. The backup should have its own reliable media or playback path; it should not depend on the playlist or computer that just failed.
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. That verifies the particular arrangement your church has built; it does not mean a secondary encoder can recover the primary computer’s playlist. Rehearse the handoff before a service and assess whether it preserves video, audio, and a valid YouTube feed without adding confusion for volunteers. YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting guidance

Check stream settings only when the symptoms point to ingest
A stream key and server URL connect the encoder to YouTube. YouTube documents reusable custom stream keys, as well as auto-start and auto-stop controls for applicable stream configurations. These settings concern the encoder-to-YouTube connection and stream behavior; they do not repair a missing OBS playlist.
If OBS reports an encoder-start or authentication problem, follow YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance: it may call for creating a new stream key and updating the encoder. Resetting the key is not a sensible first response to a playlist that disappeared while YouTube continues receiving the feed. Where the encoder supports RTMPS, YouTube also documents using its RTMPS server URL with the stream key. RTMPS is an encrypted transport option, not a playlist-recovery method. Prepare and test the setup before the next service
- Set up the event and encoder ahead of time. Confirm that the assigned volunteers can access the event and the streaming computer.
- Start the encoder before the scheduled stream. Check the Live Control Room preview for the intended picture and audio before taking the event live.
- Test the actual failure path. Verify that the fallback scene works and, if you use a backup encoder, test that the YouTube player rolls over when the primary encoder is stopped. Do this before a service, not for the first time during one.
- Monitor health while live. Watch the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages as well as the viewer-facing player. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. YouTube live-streaming guidance
- Keep a local recording and verify it is being written. YouTube recommends checking that the recording file grows during preparation. After the service, note the OBS version, source type, whether the playlist file remains available, whether the source was visible, and whether YouTube received video and audio.
- Stop the encoder after the YouTube event has stopped. Follow the event workflow so the encoder and YouTube event do not end in conflicting states. YouTube encoder setup guidance
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube is receiving video, but the playlist content is gone | OBS’s active scene, source, file availability, and playlist location | Use a prepared fallback scene if needed, then diagnose the local source after the service. |
| The stream is connected but viewers see a blank or frozen picture | Compare the player with Live Control Room ingest and inspect the active OBS scene | Switch to a known-good fallback if available; do not reset the stream key solely because playback failed. |
| Video appears but audio is missing | Check whether audio is present in the incoming feed and whether the intended OBS scene/source is active | Use the rehearsed fallback and investigate the local audio path after the service. |
| Live Control Room reports no incoming feed or an encoder-start error | Encoder connection, server URL, and stream-key configuration | Use the backup plan. Follow YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps; a new key may be relevant to a connection error, not a missing playlist. |
| Primary encoder stops and a backup is available | Whether the backup is independent and has been tested with this event setup | Make the rehearsed handoff and confirm the player receives the backup feed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the church’s goal is to keep pre-recorded video looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an OBS playlist repair: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
