That is a practical example, not evidence that Vultr is cheaper, faster, or more reliable than Linode. The available information does not establish a current, like-for-like provider winner.
For the least server administration, StreamNeo is another option: upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the video running from the cloud rather than using a VPS you manage yourself.
Which Linode alternatives fit this use case?
The right alternative depends on whether you want to administer a virtual server, use a remote OBS setup, or avoid managing streaming software altogether. These options have different architectures, so they are not interchangeable in every respect.
| Option | How it works | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Upload a video or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and start a cloud stream. | Designed to keep uploaded videos streaming to YouTube without a home computer or VPS administration. It does not stream from a camera. |
| Vultr Cloud Compute | Run OBS Studio and/or FFmpeg on an Ubuntu cloud server and configure it to send an encoder stream to YouTube. | You manage the server, software, media files, stream key, and recovery. Vultr’s guide gives a concrete setup example, but does not establish comparative price or performance. |
| Vultr Broadcaster | Use a remotely accessible OBS deployment; the guide covers uploading media and adding it as an OBS source. | Check that the product and suitable plan are currently available. It remains an OBS-based workflow, and the available documentation does not establish a current price comparison. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | Ingest a live RTMP or SRT signal and produce HLS or DASH outputs. | This is a managed transcoding architecture, not documented as a VPS that pushes a prerecorded video directly to YouTube. |
| Amazon IVS | AWS documents an FFmpeg workflow for sending recorded video to IVS. | The documented destination is IVS, not YouTube; the available evidence does not establish it as a direct YouTube-publishing substitute. |
For a direct, self-managed YouTube workflow, Vultr’s OBS streaming server guide is the clearest documented alternative in the available sources. The setup below follows its general approach; server details and YouTube settings should be checked against the current provider and YouTube documentation.

How to stream a prerecorded video from a Vultr server
1. Choose and deploy a server
Vultr’s guide, updated in 2025, lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM, 80 GB of storage, and 3 TB of bandwidth as prerequisites for its example OBS-and-FFmpeg Ubuntu server. These are Vultr’s requirements for that setup, not universal minimums for streaming prerecorded video. Its guide recommends 720p when a server has at least 2 vCPUs and says that higher output resolution and frame rate require more processing power.
Before choosing a plan, compare the total cost for the hours you intend to stream, included outbound transfer and any overage charges, CPU or GPU capacity for your chosen resolution and frame rate, source-file storage, file upload and persistence, server region and route to YouTube ingest, remote desktop availability if you need OBS’s graphical interface, reboot and recovery options, and the amount of system administration you can handle. Current, comparable prices, GPU availability, geographic performance, transfer overages, and benchmarked reliability for Linode and alternatives are not established here.
2. Install the streaming software and place the media file
Set up Ubuntu on the server and install OBS Studio and FFmpeg following the provider’s current instructions. Upload the video to storage that remains available to the server during the stream. OBS is useful when you need its graphical controls or sources; a simple file-to-stream job may be handled with FFmpeg instead. A graphical OBS desktop is not required for every prerecorded-streaming workflow.

- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings.
- Copy the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not put it in a public command, screenshot, or shared configuration file.
- In OBS, select YouTube or YouTube Gaming as the service, then enter the stream key. You can also configure an encoder workflow that sends to YouTube’s ingest address and uses the key as required by that encoder.
Vultr’s guide documents selecting YouTube in OBS, adding sources, and starting the stream. YouTube may require a channel to be enabled for live streaming; check the live-control-room status and current eligibility or verification prompts in YouTube Studio before troubleshooting the server.
4. Set the encoder output for YouTube
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and supports up to 60 fps. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the recommended bitrate at your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; requirements can change. Do not reuse bitrate figures intended for another service as if they were YouTube recommendations.

For HLS ingest, see YouTube’s HLS live streaming guidance. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. For an ordinary prerecorded encoder stream where low latency matters, RTMPS is the recommended starting point.
5. Add the video, start the encoder, and verify the broadcast
- In OBS, add the video as a media source, enable looping if you want it to repeat, and confirm that the file plays. For a sequence of files, configure the sources or playlist behavior you intend to use; Vultr’s Broadcaster guide describes a VLC Video Source for multiple files.
- Set the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval to match the stream you intend to deliver and YouTube’s current guidance.
- Start streaming from OBS, or start the FFmpeg process configured for YouTube’s ingest and your stream key.
- Wait for YouTube Studio to show the incoming preview and confirm that video and audio are present before making the stream public or starting the scheduled broadcast.
- Keep an eye on server CPU use and bandwidth while the stream is running. Vultr specifically advises monitoring both; sustained CPU pressure can disrupt encoding, while insufficient transfer capacity can affect delivery.
A VPS can keep the encoder independent of your home computer, but you are responsible for keeping the process, server, media, and credentials in working order. Plan how the stream will restart after a process or server interruption rather than assuming it will recover automatically.

What the alternatives do—and do not—replace
Google Cloud Live Stream API and Amazon IVS are not simply differently branded VPS plans. Google’s documentation describes accepting a live RTMP or SRT input and producing HLS or DASH outputs; it does not document a direct prerecorded-file-to-YouTube VPS workflow. Google’s service documentation gives input recommendations of 8 Mbps for 720p at 25/30 fps and 20 Mbps for 1080p at 50/60 fps; those figures apply to that service’s input streams, not YouTube encoder settings. Amazon IVS documents streaming recorded video with FFmpeg to IVS, not directly to YouTube.

For a provider comparison, verify the current plan terms and test the actual route and workload you expect to use. The available documentation supports a Vultr setup procedure, not a Linode-versus-Vultr/AWS/GCP ranking for cost, speed, GPU access, or reliability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright, reused content, and continuous streams
Being able to send a file as a live encoder stream does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it. Use video, music, images, and other material that you created or are licensed to use for this purpose, and check the license scope and attribution requirements. YouTube can apply copyright systems and channel policies to live content; review the current copyright safety checklist before leaving a stream running.
Repeatedly looping a file also does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization policies are separate from whether an encoder connection works. Review YouTube’s current rules for reused or repetitive content and make sure the channel’s programming offers original value rather than relying on a technical loop to satisfy policy.

Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm that the stream is enabled in YouTube Studio, the correct stream key is in use, and the encoder is sending to the selected YouTube service or ingest endpoint. If the key was exposed or copied incorrectly, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream starts but drops or stutters: Check CPU utilization, server bandwidth, and the selected output settings. Lowering resolution or frame rate can reduce processing demand; verify that the server plan and its transfer terms suit the actual stream.
- The media source is black or stops at the end: Confirm the file exists at the configured path, is readable by the streaming process, and plays on the server. Enable looping if repetition is intended, and verify the source’s loop or playlist settings.
- The broadcast is delayed more than expected: Check whether the encoder is using HLS. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because of segmented delivery; use RTMPS where it fits the encoder and workflow.
- The server reboots or the encoder process exits: Restart the streaming process and check the server’s logs and recovery configuration. A self-managed VPS does not automatically handle every process failure; document how to restore the source, settings, and stream key safely.
- YouTube receives video but the channel faces a policy issue: Treat this separately from an encoder fault. Review rights to the material and YouTube’s copyright, reused-content, and monetization requirements.
