Usually, changing your YouTube channel name or handle is not itself a published reason you cannot live stream. YouTube’s general live-streaming criteria are that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; creators must be at least 16 to start a live stream. Mobile streaming has additional requirements, including at least 50 subscribers. YouTube does not say that losing the public verification badge after a name change automatically removes live-stream access, so check your channel’s current status in YouTube Studio if the live option is missing.
What changes when you rebrand—and what does not
YouTube’s published live-streaming criteria do not list a channel-name or handle change as an eligibility requirement. That means rebranding alone is not documented as a cause of lost live access, but it is not a guarantee about an individual channel’s account state.
Keep three separate things in mind: your public channel name or handle, the public verification badge, and the channel verification required for live-stream features. YouTube says a name change removes the public badge and that a renamed channel must reapply for it. The live-stream guidance separately requires channel verification, but the cited pages do not establish that losing the public badge means losing the verification status required for live streaming.
Channel name
A new name can take a few days to appear across YouTube. You can change the name twice within a 14-day period. A name change removes the verification badge.

Handle
Your handle is a unique identifier distinct from your channel name. You can change it twice within 14 days. YouTube holds your old handle for 14 days, during which both the old and new handle URLs work; afterward, the old handle may become available to someone else. YouTube’s published live criteria do not identify handle changes as a live-access factor.
General YouTube live-streaming requirements
YouTube Help states: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.” YouTube also says creators must be at least 16 to start a live stream. Its listed routes include mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming.

A live-streaming restriction may follow a strike and can prevent streaming for 14 days. YouTube says a creator whose account is restricted cannot use another channel to live stream while that restriction remains active. Do not try to bypass a restriction by switching channels.
Extra requirements for mobile live streaming
The 50-subscriber threshold applies specifically to mobile live streaming; it is not the general threshold stated on YouTube’s live-streaming start page. YouTube’s mobile-specific requirements are:

What happens below 1,000 subscribers
For mobile channels with 50 to 999 subscribers, YouTube may limit the number of viewers and set archived streams to private by default. These changes can take a few weeks to appear. After a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removal of the mobile audience limitation may take several weeks. If the count later falls below 1,000, the lower-subscriber limitation returns; mobile access is not lost unless the channel falls below 50 subscribers.

If the live option is missing after a rebrand
Check the route you are trying to use before assuming the rebrand caused the problem. Mobile has a subscriber threshold; webcam and encoder are also documented routes, but they do not bypass the general restriction and verification requirements.
- Confirm the route: Are you trying to stream from a phone or tablet, or using a webcam or encoder? The 50-subscriber rule is specific to mobile.
- Check channel eligibility: Confirm the channel is verified and that no live-streaming restriction applies from the previous 90 days. Review YouTube Studio for the channel’s current feature status and notices.
- For mobile, check the added conditions: Confirm the channel has at least 50 subscribers and live streaming is enabled. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- Account for mobile audience limits: If the channel has fewer than 1,000 subscribers, mobile viewers may be limited and the archive may default to private. YouTube says these changes, and the removal of limitations after reaching 1,000, can take weeks.
- Handle the badge separately: If the public verification badge disappeared after a name change, YouTube says the renamed channel must reapply for it. Do not assume that badge status alone explains live-stream access.
If live access remains unavailable, YouTube’s public eligibility pages cannot diagnose the specific account. Use the current notices and controls in YouTube Studio rather than attributing the problem to rebranding without account-specific evidence.
