Run two independent FFmpeg processes on one Linode: each process loops its own prerecorded video and sends it to a separate YouTube Live event using that event’s stream URL and key. The main constraints are combined outbound bandwidth, the server’s CPU and memory, the channel’s ability to run both events, and keeping each process supervised and monitored. The exact two-process workload is not covered by a published Linode benchmark, so test your chosen instance before relying on it for continuous streams.
How the two-stream setup works
For two different loop videos going to two YouTube events, use two direct FFmpeg outputs rather than an RTMP relay. Give each process its own input file, YouTube destination, and stream key. Separate processes also let you restart or troubleshoot one stream without intentionally stopping the other.
This is an architecture based on YouTube’s standard encoder workflow and an FFmpeg looping example; it is not a reported hands-on test of two concurrent loop processes on a specific Linode instance. Confirm that your channel can run the events you intend to create, then test both outputs concurrently.
Set up the two YouTube events
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the first broadcast. Copy its server URL and stream key into the configuration for stream one.
- Create or select the second broadcast and copy its corresponding server URL and stream key into stream two’s configuration. Match each key only with its intended event.
- Treat both stream keys as credentials. Do not publish them in scripts, screenshots, logs, or support requests. Restrict access to configuration files and rotate a key in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. Use the exact values shown for each event rather than assuming both events use the same key.

Prepare inputs and choose output settings
Use one prerecorded video per process. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as the machine can process it. A stream-copy approach such as -c copy avoids re-encoding only if the input’s encoded streams and container are suitable for the output. It is not a universal setting for arbitrary media.
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked on October 3, 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3, 128 Kbps for stereo, and 44.1 kHz stereo. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the values below are specifically for 30 fps:

| Output | H.264 recommended video bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that every source needs or can sustain those rates. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance when configuring a different resolution, frame rate, or codec. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers.
Run two FFmpeg processes
Create a separate command and process for each input. The following is a structural example, not a copy-and-run command: the actual endpoint, key, input path, codecs, bitrate, and container options depend on your event and media. Add the appropriate output options for your selected YouTube settings, and do not put a real stream key in a command that will be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video-one.mp4 [output options] -f flv "rtmps://youtube-ingest-url/STREAM_KEY_ONE"
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video-two.mp4 [output options] -f flv "rtmps://youtube-ingest-url/STREAM_KEY_TWO"
Replace the bracketed portion with valid FFmpeg output settings. If you use stream copy, verify the input’s codecs, timestamps, and container compatibility first; if you transcode, specify codecs and rate-control settings that match YouTube’s current guidance. Do not assume that the example’s FLV output or any single codec configuration fits every ingest endpoint and source.
- Start each process against its matching YouTube event.
- Check Live Control Room for both events’ incoming video, audio, and stream health.
- Test representative motion and sound, not just a static opening frame, and observe both streams at once.
- Run a sustained test while watching server CPU, memory, dropped frames, and outbound network use.
- Configure independent process supervision and alerting. Test how each process behaves after an exit or network interruption; no particular supervisor setup or uptime is guaranteed by the cited guidance.
Plan bandwidth, transfer, and server capacity
Calculate the combined outbound rate
The server must send both streams at the same time, so add their video bitrates, then allow for audio and protocol overhead. At YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, two 720p30 streams total about 16 Mbps of video; two 1080p30 streams total about 28 Mbps. Mixed resolutions or codecs require adding the chosen rate for each stream.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a rough monthly transfer estimate in decimal GB, use combined Mbps × 0.45 × hours streamed. For example, a combined video rate of 16 Mbps streamed for 720 hours is roughly 5,184 GB before audio, protocol overhead, restarts, or other account traffic. This is a planning calculation, not a Linode quote. Check the selected plan’s current transfer allowance and your account’s current billing terms before committing to a resolution.
Size the instance by measurement
Linode’s RTMP guide says one stream may fit a 1 GB instance and suggests at least 4 GB for retransmitting to several sites or converting formats. That is broad guide advice, not a current benchmark for two independent FFmpeg loop encoders. Copying already encoded media should generally use less CPU than transcoding, but the actual load depends on the source, output settings, and instance. Measure the two-process workload during a sustained test instead of treating those instance figures as a guarantee.

A Linode Community respondent described an individual setup about four years before October 3, 2026: approximately 10 Mbps outbound for one 4K stream and approximately 20 Mbps for two, then about 4.03 Mbps combined after lowering both inputs to 480p. This is an operator anecdote, not a controlled benchmark. The same post’s transfer limits and overage prices are historical and should not be used as current plan terms. The useful lesson is to measure concurrent output and compare it with the transfer budget currently attached to your account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why use direct FFmpeg rather than a relay?
A Linode RTMP relay can accept one incoming feed and push copies to multiple destinations. That is useful when redistributing the same incoming stream. For two different prerecorded loops going to two separate YouTube events, two direct FFmpeg processes are simpler; the cited Linode guidance does not require a relay for this case. A relay still has to send a copy to every destination and may require more resources if it transcodes.
Troubleshoot common failures
- One event receives no video: Check that the process uses that event’s server URL and matching key, and confirm the event is live and ready in Live Control Room. Avoid swapping the two keys.
- Video arrives but stream health is poor: Compare the configured resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance. Reduce the output rate or resolution if the server or connection cannot sustain both streams.
- Both streams degrade when started together: Inspect combined egress, CPU, memory, and dropped frames. Test lower bitrates or avoid transcoding if compatible stream copy is possible; otherwise choose an instance and transfer allowance based on measured use.
- FFmpeg exits or stops advancing: Check the process output and input file access, then configure a supervisor to restart each process independently and alert on repeated failure. Test the recovery path rather than assuming a restart will restore the YouTube event automatically.
- Audio or video does not play as expected: Test each file’s codecs and timestamps and verify representative sound and motion in Live Control Room. A loop flag does not make an incompatible input compatible with YouTube ingest.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a managed alternative for prerecorded YouTube loops: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot supports one always-on YouTube stream, playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; the video is not re-encoded. Storage is 10 GB per slot, pooled across active slots. Plans have the same features and differ by duration. The first day is free with no card, once per account; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
Choose it if you prefer not to maintain a Linode, supervise FFmpeg, or budget server egress yourself. It is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera broadcasting. Compare the service details at StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
