You can send captions embedded in the stream as EIA 608/CEA 708, or deliver them through YouTube’s caption ingestion URL using supported caption software. YouTube automatic live captions are a more limited fallback: the documented setup is English-only, for eligible streams at normal latency, and captions do not remain on the finished video.
Choose a live caption method
YouTube documents two ways to deliver captions to a live stream: embed captions in the encoded video, or send them to YouTube through a caption ingestion feed. Its automatic captions are a separate, constrained option. The right choice depends on the stream’s language, whether you can provide prepared or human-reviewed text, your latency needs, and how you will caption the archive.

Why kirtan needs a tested caption plan
Kirtan is sung, and a continuous devotional stream may include instruments, multiple voices, repeated verses, and languages other than English. YouTube warns that automatic recognition may be affected by accents, dialects, mispronunciation, background noise, unsupported languages, poor sound, long silence, complex audio, or overlapping speech. Its documentation does not establish accuracy for sung kirtan lyrics, so treat that as an unverified use case rather than promising viewers that automatic captions will be correct.
YouTube’s own warning is direct: “Automatic captions might misrepresent the spoken content due to mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise.” Test a representative passage with the actual language, singers, instruments, and mix before relying on automatic captions. If viewers need reliable lyrics, use prepared or human-reviewed captions in a live caption workflow.

Set up YouTube automatic captions for an eligible stream
This option is appropriate only if the stream is in English, uses normal latency, and your channel and stream have access to the feature. YouTube describes availability as a gradual rollout for eligible English channels when professional captions are unavailable; it is configured for individual streams rather than at channel level. Check the current Help instructions because availability can change.
- In YouTube Studio, open Go live and choose Stream.
- Turn on Closed captions, select Automatic captions, then choose the video language. The documented live automatic-caption option is English-only.
- Start the stream and verify captions appear in the player. Check a passage that represents the actual kirtan audio, not just a spoken introduction.
- If captions are missing or unusable, do not treat the stream as captioned; switch to a supported live caption feed or revise the plan.
Low or ultra-low latency, unsupported language, poor sound, or overlapping voices can prevent captions from appearing. Even when they do appear, review the result for lyric errors rather than assuming recognition is accurate.

Send captions through an encoder or caption feed
Embed EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In the stream’s setup settings, enable Closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder and caption source to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions with the stream.
- Test synchronization and legibility in the live player before relying on the setup for a continuous broadcast.
YouTube currently supports one caption track, so plan for the single track your stream will deliver. The caption source must actually produce the language and lyric treatment your viewers need; selecting the embedded option alone does not create captions.
Use YouTube’s caption ingestion URL
- Turn on captions for the live event in YouTube’s live setup and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to your captioner or supported caption software and configure it to send the feed to YouTube.
- Keep the system clock accurate. YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed only.
- For event captions, YouTube’s instructions specify a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Confirm that this documented event workflow fits your particular continuous stream and the delay viewers can accept.
- Run a test and check that captions arrive, stay synchronized, and contain the intended text.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later), Case CATalyst (BCS version 14.52 or later), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net for live-caption support. These are examples in YouTube’s documentation, not a guarantee that every listed option is current for your setup or suitable for 24/7 sung kirtan. Ask any provider about support for YouTube’s current ingestion workflow, your language, prepared or reviewed lyrics, continuous coverage, and acceptable latency before choosing it.

Caption the recording separately
Live captions and captions on the finished video are separate tasks. YouTube says automatic live captions will not remain on the video after the broadcast ends; captions may be generated for the VOD separately and may differ from the live captions.
For an archived video, YouTube Studio lets you upload a caption file with timed lines, synchronize a same-language transcript, or type captions manually. YouTube does not recommend transcript auto-sync for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio. A 24-hour archive exceeds that caveat, so do not assume that submitting one long transcript will produce reliable timing. Check YouTube’s current workflow and, where appropriate, handle the recording in manageable segments.

Check accessibility and continuity
WCAG 2.0 success criterion 1.2.4 states: “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media. (Level AA)” This is a general accessibility benchmark, not a determination of legal requirements for a particular channel or jurisdiction. For a kirtan channel, make the caption plan part of the broadcast plan: decide how captions cover the language and lyrics, test synchronization and delay, and decide how the archive will be corrected.
