A basic cloud VPS can start at about $4–$5 per month, but that is only the server’s entry price—not a reliable estimate of a 24/7 Gurbani stream’s total cost. For a continuous 128 kbps audio feed, each average listener uses about 41.5 GB of outbound data over 30 days; 100 average listeners would use about 4.15 TB. Your bitrate, average audience, region and provider’s transfer rules determine whether a low-cost plan is enough.
Estimate the bandwidth before choosing a server
For one continuous audio feed delivered directly to listeners, estimate decimal outbound gigabytes over a 30-day month with this formula:
Bitrate (kbps) × 10.8 × average concurrent listeners = approximate GB per 30 days
This assumes each listener receives one unicast copy of the feed continuously. It excludes protocol overhead, reconnects, website traffic, monitoring, backups and any CDN or relay. Some providers meter in GiB rather than decimal GB, and some include inbound traffic in an allowance.

These are planning calculations using an explicitly assumed 128 kbps bitrate, not measurements of a particular Gurbani stream. Substitute the actual encoded bitrate and average concurrent audience for a better estimate. Peak listeners may affect the server capacity you need, while average listeners drive this simple monthly transfer estimate.

At the 128 kbps assumption, 100 average listeners exceed the 1 TB allowance in the cited Lightsail example, before accounting for other traffic. That illustrates why the advertised server price alone cannot establish the monthly bill.
What changes your actual monthly total
- Encoding and delivery: Confirm the audio bitrate and whether the VPS originates and encodes the feed or only relays audio encoded elsewhere. The server’s role affects the compute resources required.
- Audience and transfer: Estimate average concurrent listeners, then compare the resulting outbound data with the selected plan’s allowance. Check whether inbound traffic also counts.
- Region and overages: Check region-specific allowances, the provider’s billing unit and the overage rate. An allowance stated in TB and an overage billed per GiB are not directly interchangeable without accounting for those units.
- Other services: A website, monitoring, backups, domain, CDN or managed streaming service may add costs. No prices for those add-ons are established here.
“24/7” describes how long the stream runs; it does not determine the network bill on its own. With no specified bitrate, audience, region or ingest architecture, there is no single guaranteed monthly total.
