To run a Punjabi Gurbani music stream on YouTube with FFmpeg, first enable live streaming on an eligible channel, prepare recordings you have permission to broadcast, then configure FFmpeg to loop your media and publish it to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest. For a genuine 24/7 operation, also plan for network or process failures: -stream_loop -1 repeats an input, but it does not guarantee that a dropped YouTube publishing connection will recover.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s stated conditions include channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do it before the planned broadcast.
- A computer that can run FFmpeg continuously, a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your selected stream profile, and power/network arrangements appropriate to an always-on broadcast.
- The video and audio files you plan to play, and documented permission or licenses covering the particular recordings and compositions used.
- Access to YouTube Live Control Room so you can create or select the stream, retrieve its server URL and private stream key, and monitor the encoder preview and stream health.
YouTube supports software encoders, but the available guidance does not set minimum CPU, RAM, storage, or thermal requirements for an unattended FFmpeg host. Choose a computer only after deciding on your output resolution and codec, then test it under the expected encoding load.
Clear music rights before you stream
Do not assume a recording is free to broadcast because it contains Gurbani or is devotional. Rights can differ between the underlying composition and a particular performance or sound recording. Check the license or obtain permission for each recording and for the planned live use.
YouTube for Artists advises: “If you’re planning on using copyright-protected music during your live stream, we recommend coordinating with your label or distributor to avoid any issues, such as copyright strikes.” That is a recommendation to coordinate; it does not establish that any particular Gurbani recording is cleared.

Choose the stream profile
Pick a resolution and frame rate your encoder and connection can sustain. A music-first broadcast does not need a higher video resolution to improve its audio. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not a guarantee of playback quality or a viewer’s download bitrate. YouTube publishes separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so do not apply these H.264 figures to those codecs.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate | Keyframe interval at the recommended 2-second interval |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 60 frames per keyframe |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 60 frames per keyframe |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 120 frames per keyframe |
The frame counts are arithmetic examples: frame rate multiplied by two seconds. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe every two seconds, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its current ingest guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, the recommendation is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz.
Leave headroom between the stream’s bitrate and the connection’s sustained upload capacity; a connection that only just matches the encoder setting can falter when its real throughput varies. Rehearse with the actual music and moving visuals you intend to use, rather than judging the setup from a static screen or silent test.

Set up YouTube Live Control Room
- Enable live streaming in advance. Verify the channel and check its live-stream eligibility. If this is the first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the encoder ingest destination and copy the server URL and stream key for that stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not include it in public posts, screenshots, shared documents, or a command that will be visible to other users. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s controls before continuing.
- Choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use the server URL and key associated with the selected stream, not a value copied from an unrelated setup.
- Set the intended visibility and rehearse. Start with a private or unlisted test if that suits your channel workflow. Confirm that the preview appears, stream health is acceptable, the audio is continuous, and the picture has no obvious stutters or broken loop point before making the broadcast public.
Prepare media and loop it with FFmpeg
Make the source predictable
For the simplest file-based setup, prepare one video file with its audio already combined. If your audio and visuals are separate, a playlist or a changing set of files, the FFmpeg input and synchronization choices differ; do not assume a command for one layout will work for another. Check the beginning and end of each item, audio levels, gaps, and whether the loop transition is acceptable. A hard cut or repeated opening may be especially noticeable in a devotional music stream.
Use infinite input looping deliberately
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as looping an input indefinitely. Place it as an input option for the media file you intend to repeat. This repeats that input; it does not itself set YouTube’s ingest destination, choose compatible output codecs, guarantee continuous timestamps, or reconnect a failed publishing session.
FFmpeg’s -re option reads a file at its native rate and can be useful when feeding file media as a live-paced source. FFmpeg cautions against using low read rates with actual capture devices or live streams because that can cause packet loss. Do not add it blindly when the input is already a live or real-time source.

Match the output to your profile
Configure the output to match the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR behavior, audio format, and keyframe interval selected for YouTube ingest. You can stream-copy only when the source streams already meet the intended output profile and behave correctly through the loop; otherwise, encode to the chosen profile. A file’s extension alone does not establish that its codecs, timestamps, frame rate, or audio format are suitable.
There is no single safe, copy-and-paste FFmpeg command for every setup. The correct input arguments depend on whether your source is one combined file, separate audio and video, a playlist, or an HTTP feed; output arguments depend on your FFmpeg build and chosen profile. Build the command around those actual inputs and the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room. Do not publish the key by pasting a complete command into a public chat, issue tracker, or screenshot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart the broadcast and verify it
- Start FFmpeg and watch its console output for input, encoding, timestamp, and output errors.
- In Live Control Room, confirm the encoder has connected and inspect the preview before starting or announcing the public broadcast.
- Check stream health, picture motion, and audio on a separate playback device. Listen across at least one loop boundary; a stream can show a picture while its audio is silent, clipped, out of sync, or abruptly restarting.
- Keep the FFmpeg process, the machine, and its network connection running. Record how an authorized operator can restart the process and regain access if the host or connection fails.
- Continue monitoring logs and YouTube’s stream health. A successful start is not proof that a long-running process will remain healthy unattended.
Make the 24/7 operation recoverable
Infinite looping solves only the media-repeat part of the problem. FFmpeg’s documented reconnect switches such as reconnect, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_at_eof concern HTTP protocol behavior on the input side. They are not general repair switches for a failed RTMP(S) output connection to YouTube.

For a self-hosted setup, plan for failures as separate cases:
- FFmpeg exits: use a process supervisor or a documented operator restart procedure, and retain logs that explain why the encoder stopped.
- Internet or power fails: arrange reliable connectivity and power for the host, and decide how an operator will confirm that the connection and broadcast recovered.
- YouTube ingest drops: monitor the Live Control Room and have a tested procedure to restart publishing with the correct destination and key. Do not assume the input reconnect options restore the YouTube output.
- Source media ends or stalls: check the input and loop behavior during rehearsal; an infinite loop flag does not fix a damaged file or an unsuitable playlist.
These are operational safeguards, not an uptime guarantee. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not prescribe one method for keeping a single broadcast uninterrupted for 24 hours or longer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan archives and broadcast boundaries
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not mean a single 24/7 broadcast will become one complete automatic archive, and the platform guidance does not guarantee a single archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. If complete recordings matter, decide how to handle broadcast segmentation and archival needs before going live rather than relying on an assumed 24-hour replay.
