To run a podcast continuously on YouTube from Linux, use OBS Studio to send your prepared program audio and a visual scene to YouTube’s Live Control Room over RTMPS. Enable live streaming on an eligible channel, configure the stream key and encoder, test the audio and connection, and enable OBS’s automatic reconnect option. That can keep a desktop-based broadcast going through some connection drops, but it is not a guarantee of unattended 24/7 uptime: the computer, OBS, network, power, and YouTube enforcement can each interrupt it.
Choose between a Linux desktop and a cloud stream
OBS Studio is a practical graphical encoder for a Linux desktop: it lets you assemble audio and visuals into a scene, preview the result, send it to YouTube, and enable automatic reconnect. The trade-off is that the desktop and its network connection must remain available, and you must plan for failures that reconnect cannot fix.
If your priority is keeping a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: it loops uploaded videos, supports playlists, and runs without a home computer staying on. Details are below the desktop setup.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
Check eligibility before installing or configuring
YouTube requires a verified channel with live streaming enabled, no live streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and an account holder who meets its minimum age requirement of 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your intended launch. These requirements and timing are described in YouTube Help’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Create or select a stream in Live Control Room
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the server URL and stream key for the encoder configuration. A stream key is sensitive: YouTube describes stream keys as being like the stream’s password and address. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with someone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
Install OBS Studio on Linux
Follow OBS Project’s Linux installation guidance for your distribution. OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and provides a PPA-based installation route for Ubuntu. Its stated Linux/Unix requirements include an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland support.
Meeting minimum requirements does not prove that a particular computer can encode your chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity reliably. Test the actual workload on the machine you intend to use; watch for dropped frames, audio gaps, high CPU/GPU load, and heat-related instability.

Build a podcast scene in OBS
Add the program audio
In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast and add the source that carries your prepared podcast audio. Depending on how you play or route the program on Linux, this may be an audio input or desktop/application audio captured by OBS. Confirm the source is visible in OBS’s audio mixer and that its meter moves during playback. Use headphones or a separate monitoring path to check for silence, clipping, or unwanted system sounds before going live.
If the host will speak live, add a microphone input and test its level and routing separately. A microphone is not necessary when the stream only relays already prepared audio.
Add a visual feed
YouTube’s encoder workflow sends a video feed, so make a simple scene with a static visual such as show artwork that you have the rights to use. A static image is enough for a basic audio-first presentation; it does not replace the need to clear rights for the podcast audio. Preview the scene to ensure that the image is correctly framed and remains visible while the audio plays.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open OBS’s stream settings. Choose YouTube as the service if it is available in your OBS setup. If configuring a custom service, enter the server URL copied from YouTube Studio.
- Enter the stream key. Paste the key from Live Control Room into OBS’s stream-key field. Keep it private.
- Configure the output and video. Choose an encoder and output settings that your machine can sustain and that meet YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your intended resolution and frame rate.
- Start with a private or otherwise limited test. Start streaming from OBS, then check the preview and stream-health information in YouTube Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
Use settings that match the connection and workload
YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its TLS/SSL-protected form of RTMP.
There is no single bitrate that is right for every stream. Set it according to YouTube’s current guidance for the resolution and frame rate you choose, then verify that the available upload connection can sustain it. Test under conditions similar to the real broadcast, including the full audio program and any motion in the scene. A connection that barely works in a brief test may fail during a longer run or when other devices use the network.
Recommended Free Tools
- Connection: Prefer RTMPS where available.
- Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Codec: Use a supported video codec and AAC or MP3 audio, with choices your encoder and computer can sustain.
- Bitrate: Follow YouTube’s current settings for the selected output and test against real upload capacity rather than assuming a universal value.
Test audio continuity, reconnect, and supervision
In OBS’s streaming settings, enable automatic reconnect and test what happens when the connection briefly drops. OBS documents this option as a recovery aid, not an end-to-end uptime guarantee. It cannot by itself ensure that OBS relaunches after an application crash, that Linux restarts the stream after a system reboot, or that the desktop survives a power failure.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
During the test, check both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room: confirm the preview appears, stream health is acceptable, and the program audio continues without silence or duplication. For an extended broadcast, arrange a way to notice problems and intervene. A genuinely unattended desktop installation needs its own tested plan for startup after reboot, process failure, network loss, and power interruption; the OBS and YouTube controls described here do not provide a complete recovery plan for all of those cases.
Understand what YouTube saves from a long stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream that runs longer than that will become one complete replay. If you need a complete recording, set up a separate local recording workflow, confirm that it is actually recording, and make sure the machine has enough storage for the intended duration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clear podcast rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s terms require you to hold the rights needed for both live and archived material, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the video with a placeholder and may interrupt or terminate the stream. Having a license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel for the content to remain live.

Clear every element in the program, not just the spoken episode: music beds, theme songs, clips, guest contributions, and artwork can have separate rights. A technically healthy encoder cannot prevent a rights-related interruption.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
YouTube does not receive a signal
- Check that the stream is enabled in YouTube Studio and that OBS is using the matching server URL and current key.
- Look for accidental whitespace or a stale key. If you reset the key in YouTube Studio, replace it in OBS too.
- Confirm the computer has an internet connection and OBS has not stopped or been blocked by a local firewall or network policy.
The preview appears, but the stream is unstable
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS’s dropped-frame information.
- Reduce output demands if the tested upload connection or computer cannot sustain the selected settings. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the new output rather than guessing at a bitrate.
- Check for competing upload traffic and repeat a longer test using the actual program and scene.
The video is live but the podcast audio is missing or wrong
- Verify the intended source is selected and active in OBS’s audio mixer.
- Check that the audio meter moves during playback and that the stream’s chosen audio output is the one OBS is sending.
- Monitor for muted sources, clipping, doubled desktop and input audio, or a playback application that has stopped.
The stream stops and does not return
- Automatic reconnect may help with a connection interruption; check whether OBS remains open and whether YouTube receives the signal again.
- If OBS crashed, the desktop rebooted, or power failed, reconnect alone may not restart the full setup. Relaunch and verify the scene, stream key, preview, and audio.
- If the interruption coincides with a rights claim or placeholder, investigate the content and rights status in YouTube rather than treating it as an encoder fault.
Or let it run in the cloud
