You can run a continuous Rajasthani folk music stream from a laptop by connecting encoder software such as OBS to a YouTube Live stream key. First make sure the channel is eligible to livestream, then set up the stream, test your audio and upload connection, and plan for stream handoffs: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives. You also need rights for every recording and performance you broadcast.

Confirm YouTube Live is available

Clear the music you plan to play
Rajasthani folk as a genre does not automatically make a particular recording free to use. You are responsible for securing the necessary rights for each recording, performance, arrangement, and master recording, including any applicable rights held by artists, labels, publishers, or other participants. YouTube’s livestream terms place that responsibility on the creator.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder, and continued use may interrupt or terminate the stream. If you have permission to use third-party music, ask the rightsholder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist to avoid a live interruption. Set up the laptop stream in YouTube Studio
- Install an encoder. YouTube lists OBS as an open-source software encoder available at no charge. Download it from its official source and install the version that supports your laptop’s operating system. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the connection process.
- Create or select a broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select one you have already configured.
- Copy the ingest details into the encoder. From the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding server/URL and key fields in OBS. The key functions like a password: keep it private and do not show it in screen captures or broadcasts. YouTube’s guide explains the encoder connection.
- Choose a sustainable output. Set the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in OBS to match what the laptop and connection can maintain. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p and 30 fps; this is a platform configuration recommendation, not a guarantee of picture quality. Consult the current encoder settings and bitrate table for other resolutions or codecs. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure ingest protocol.
- Test the real setup before launch. Send representative audio and video to YouTube, check the Live Control Room preview, and listen for clipping, silence, or an incorrect balance. Monitor the stream’s health indicators and audio/video quality before and during the broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring rather than assuming a successful encoder connection means a healthy stream.
- Start the broadcast and keep the laptop connected. Start streaming from the encoder and confirm that the Live Control Room shows the expected signal before making the stream public or announcing it. For a laptop-run stream, the computer and its network connection need to remain available for the broadcast to continue.
Plan bandwidth, audio, and power for continuous playback
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity about 20% above the stream’s bitrate. That margin matters because other devices and applications may share the connection, reducing what is actually available to the encoder. Test the same network and stream settings you intend to use, and watch for health warnings. A wired connection can reduce reliance on Wi-Fi; if the laptop lacks an Ethernet port, check adapter compatibility with its ports and operating system before buying one. Make the audio dependable
Before leaving the stream unattended, listen to the complete signal path: the source file, the encoder’s audio input, and YouTube’s preview. Check that playback does not stop between tracks, that levels are consistent, and that no notification sounds or unrelated computer audio enter the broadcast. Use recordings you have permission to stream.

Keep the computer from interrupting playback
For a laptop-based setup, prevent sleep or hibernation from stopping the encoder, connect the power adapter, and avoid relying on a battery for an ongoing broadcast. Close unnecessary network-heavy applications and arrange a way to check the Live Control Room and the laptop periodically. These are operational precautions; a laptop workflow still depends on the laptop and local connection staying available.
Handle YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That affects the replay/archive, not just whether the live signal is still running. If preserving a replay matters, record locally and plan stream boundaries rather than assuming a single nonstop broadcast will produce a complete archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

A continuous channel schedule therefore needs an operational handoff: decide when to stop and restart the broadcast, how to avoid an unintended gap, and who will confirm the new stream is live. If a complete record matters, retain local recordings independently of YouTube’s archive.
Troubleshoot common failures
- You cannot start a live stream: verify the channel, check for a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- YouTube receives no signal: confirm the encoder is using the current stream URL and key from the Live Control Room, and check that the encoder is actively sending. If you regenerated the key, update the encoder’s saved key.
- Connection health is poor or the stream drops: test available upload capacity, reduce the bitrate or resolution to a sustainable setting, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. Check whether other devices or applications are consuming bandwidth.
- Audio is missing, distorted, or inconsistent: check the encoder’s selected audio source and levels, then run another representative test and listen to the Live Control Room preview before resuming.
- The stream is interrupted for copyright: stop using the matched material until you have confirmed the necessary rights and, where applicable, that the rightsholder has allowlisted your channel in Content ID. A general claim of permission may not prevent automated live scanning from interrupting the broadcast.
- The live stream has no complete replay: check its duration. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured; use local recording and planned stream boundaries when archive preservation is important.
