OBS Studio 28.0, released September 1, 2022, introduced HDR and 10-bit encoding support, native Apple Silicon builds, and a move from Qt 5 to Qt 6. It also added production and accessibility features. But OBS 28 is a historical release, not the current version: the official download page listed OBS Studio 32.2.2 on October 3, 2026. Before installing any version, check your operating-system compatibility and confirm that essential plugins support it.
What changed in OBS Studio 28?
OBS 28.0’s release notes describe a major update, with changes to video encoding, platform support, audio capture, recording, and integrations. The details below are specific to OBS 28; they should not be assumed to describe later releases.
HDR and 10-bit encoding
OBS 28 added HDR and 10-bit encoding support, subject to the encoder, hardware, and service workflow. The release notes specify AV1 or HEVC for HDR and 10-bit encoding. For HDR, OBS recommended the P010 color format and Rec. 2100 PQ color space. HDR streaming was limited in the 28.0 notes to YouTube’s HLS service using an HEVC encoder. See the OBS 28.0 release notes and OBS HDR guidance for the version-specific requirements.
For 10-bit HEVC, the release notes specified NVIDIA 10-series, AMD 5000-series, or newer GPUs; Intel QuickSync and Apple VT were not supported for that case in OBS 28. The release also noted limitations: several filters were unavailable when a source rendered in HDR (Apply LUT, Chroma Key, Color Key, Image Mask/Blend, Luma Key, and Sharpness); HDR support and preview were limited on macOS and Linux; and some inputs and encoders still needed updates. A supported video capture device could be used for HDR capture, but it is a workflow-specific option, not a general requirement for OBS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Native Apple Silicon builds
OBS 28 introduced native Apple Silicon builds, allowing the app to run without x86 emulation on supported Macs. Plugin availability was a caveat: OBS warned that some third-party plugins might not yet have native Apple Silicon versions. If a required plugin was unavailable natively, the x86 build could be an option, provided it suited the user’s setup. Check the plugin developer’s current compatibility information before choosing a build.
Qt 6 and operating-system support
OBS 28 migrated its interface toolkit from Qt 5 to Qt 6. That transition removed support for Windows 7 and 8, macOS 10.13 and 10.14, Ubuntu 18.04, and 32-bit operating systems. Plugins that depended on Qt 5 components could also require updates. OBS’s release notes cautioned: “Some plugins may not be compatible with OBS 28.” Check that the operating system meets the requirements of the build you intend to install; do not assume an older computer can run it simply because it ran an earlier OBS version.

Should you install OBS 28 now?
Usually, start with the current OBS release rather than installing version 28 just because it introduced a feature you want. OBS 28 is not current: when checked on October 3, 2026, the official download page listed version 32.2.2. The page can change, so check it at the time you download.
Use OBS 28 specifically only when you have a reason to use that historical version, such as compatibility with a particular setup. Before changing a working production machine, make a list of the plugins and external integrations your workflow depends on, then check that each supports your operating system and OBS build. The official OBS 28 plugin compatibility list is dated August 31, 2022, covers Windows, Intel macOS, and Apple Silicon macOS, and says it is not exhaustive. Treat it as a historical reference, then verify critical plugins with their developers.

How to update OBS Studio safely
The safest route depends on your operating system and how OBS was installed. The official download page provides platform-specific downloads and links to previous releases; a single in-app update sequence is not established for every platform and installation channel.
- Check your system and install source. Identify your operating system version and architecture, and whether OBS came from the official installer, a package manager, or another distribution channel. If considering OBS 28, account for its Qt 6 removal of older OS versions and 32-bit support.
- Inventory your workflow. Write down essential plugins, scripts, and external integrations. Check each developer’s compatibility notes for the exact OBS version, operating system, and architecture you plan to use. For Apple Silicon, confirm whether a required plugin has a native build or whether the x86 OBS build is appropriate.
- Choose the intended release. Go to the official OBS download page, select the platform build, and follow its link to previous releases only if you specifically need an older version. The listed current version can change.
- Install through the channel that matches your setup. Follow the instructions for the selected build and installation source. Avoid mixing installers or package-manager versions without checking how that affects the existing installation.
- Verify before going live or recording. Open your scenes and sources, check that essential plugins load, test audio and video capture, and make a short recording or private stream test. For an HDR workflow, confirm the encoder, color settings, service path, and any filter limitations before relying on it in production.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video looping as a YouTube live stream, OBS is a do-it-yourself option, but it depends on a computer and connection staying available. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
