Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For the VPS itself, a concrete starting point is $6 per month for a DigitalOcean 1 GiB, 1-vCPU Droplet with 1,000 GiB of included transfer, or $12 per month for a 2 GiB, 1-vCPU Droplet with 2,000 GiB of transfer. Those are provider list prices observed in 2026, not a complete channel budget or a guarantee that either server can encode your chosen stream. Music permissions, taxes, storage, monitoring and any transfer overage can add costs; the applicable music-rights fee depends on the repertoire and permissions and is not established here.
The most useful way to estimate a 24/7 bill is to calculate your stream’s outbound data from its bitrate, then check that against the VPS plan’s included transfer. At a constant 1 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 324 decimal GB before overhead. At 3 Mbps, it sends about 972 GB. DigitalOcean lists Bangalore as a datacenter location, which may be useful for an India-focused channel, but you should test the route and stream health rather than assume a location guarantees performance.
What the VPS costs—and what that price covers
A VPS is a rented virtual server that stays online to run your encoder and send a stream to YouTube. DigitalOcean’s pricing page lists these examples, accessed in 2026:
| DigitalOcean example | Compute | Included transfer | Listed monthly price | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GiB Droplet | 1 vCPU, 1 GiB RAM | 1,000 GiB | $6/month | Base VPS price and stated transfer allowance; not a tested encoding capacity |
| 2 GiB Droplet | 1 vCPU, 2 GiB RAM | 2,000 GiB | $12/month | Base VPS price and stated transfer allowance; not a tested encoding capacity |
These are DigitalOcean examples, not a market-wide average. The cited plan information does not establish the disk allocation, taxes, CPU sharing details, transfer overage rates, backup costs or monitoring costs, so check the current provider page and checkout terms before ordering. DigitalOcean lists Bangalore among its datacenter locations; the plan examples do not establish that a particular route from Bangalore to YouTube will suit your channel.

Estimate monthly transfer from the stream bitrate
For a continuously running stream, estimate outbound data as bitrate in Mbps × seconds streamed ÷ 8, then convert megabits to megabytes and account for the provider’s billing units. A 30-day month has 2,592,000 seconds. The values below assume a constant bitrate for the entire month and exclude protocol overhead, retries and other server traffic.
| Constant stream bitrate | Estimated data in 30 days | Approximate binary equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 324 decimal GB | 302 GiB |
| 2 Mbps | 648 decimal GB | 604 GiB |
| 3 Mbps | 972 decimal GB | 905 GiB |
On the listed allowance alone, these estimates sit below 1,000 GiB, but the 3 Mbps case leaves less room for overhead and other traffic than the 1 Mbps case. Compare the stream’s actual encoder bitrate with the plan’s allowance, and confirm whether the provider counts transfer in GB or GiB and what traffic it bills. A backup process, archive uploads, software updates or a second stream can use the same pool. Do not treat the allowance as a target or assume that a stream will never incur extra charges.

Why bitrate matters more than the number of viewers for this calculation
The calculation is based on the data your VPS sends to YouTube as the ingest stream. It does not multiply by the audience size: YouTube distributes the stream to viewers. If you change bitrate, resolution or frame rate, recalculate using the bitrate actually configured in your encoder. Variable or changing bitrates make a constant-rate estimate less exact.
Build the complete budget, not just the VPS line item
The VPS rent is only one part of the cost. Use separate budget lines so that unknown items do not get hidden inside a misleading total.

- VPS rent: Start with the plan’s recurring price, CPU, RAM, disk and included transfer. The DigitalOcean figures above are a reference point, not a recommendation that either plan is sufficient.
- Transfer overages: Estimate the stream’s monthly outbound use and check the provider’s billing unit, policy and overage rate. Those overage rates are not stated in the plan examples above.
- Music permissions: Treat rights for the exact recordings, compositions, territories, livestream and any archive as a separate, catalog-specific budget item. The cited YouTube material establishes that rights are required, but does not provide a fee applicable to a particular Indian music channel.
- Other operating costs: Taxes, storage or archive retention, a backup encoder or VPS, monitoring and support depend on the provider and workflow. No amount for these items is established by the listed plan prices.
Accordingly, the defensible starting budget is the chosen VPS’s listed rent plus whatever your own verified rights, tax, storage, monitoring and transfer requirements cost. There is not enough established information to give a trustworthy all-in figure for every Indian music channel.
Will a low-cost VPS handle a 24/7 encoder?
The plan price and transfer allowance do not prove that a server can encode a particular stream reliably. CPU needs depend on the software, codec, resolution, frame rate, visual complexity and any audio processing. The plan examples specify one vCPU each, but the cited sources do not benchmark those servers against any encoder setup.

Choose your target stream settings using YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then test the exact configuration on the VPS. YouTube’s published guidance includes CBR and H.264, H.265 or AV1 video options, plus AAC or MP3 audio; recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. It also advises leaving bandwidth headroom: its streaming tips recommend 20% beyond the total stream bitrate. For a VPS, that means checking the server’s outbound capacity as well as the plan’s monthly transfer pool. Do not select a resolution or bitrate solely because the server’s transfer allowance appears large enough.
Keyframe interval requirements and exact bitrate targets can change with YouTube’s published settings. Use the current YouTube encoder settings for your selected resolution and frame rate rather than relying on a remembered value. Confirm the encoder’s actual output bitrate during a test stream and use that number in your monthly transfer estimate.

Set up and test a VPS stream before leaving it unattended
- Confirm YouTube Live access. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is the channel’s first encoder setup, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the planned launch time.
- Select a VPS and region. Compare recurring price, CPU allocation, RAM, storage, transfer pool, overage terms, taxes and available datacenter locations. Bangalore is one listed DigitalOcean location. Choose based on your budget and test results, not location alone.
- Prepare the video and rights paperwork. Make sure you have the necessary rights for the music and recordings you intend to broadcast. Keep permission and any Content ID allowlisting details available before going live; a VPS subscription does not grant music rights.
- Configure an encoder for the actual stream. Select a video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate supported by YouTube’s current encoder settings. Use CBR where applicable, provide the bandwidth headroom YouTube recommends, and check the current keyframe guidance rather than guessing. The right settings depend on the intended stream and the VPS’s tested capacity.
- Connect using the YouTube stream key. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings, and keep it private. Anyone who obtains the key may be able to send a stream to that destination. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- Preview before publishing. Start a test feed, check the preview in Live Control Room, and confirm that audio and video are present, the expected bitrate is reaching YouTube, and no rights warning or stream-health issue appears. YouTube’s encoder tips recommend setting up in advance, previewing and monitoring quality.
- Test recovery and monitoring. Check what happens if the encoder process or VPS restarts and whether your chosen setup resumes without manual intervention. YouTube’s event-oriented tips include checking backup failover and continuously monitoring audio and video quality; applying those checks to a continuous stream does not guarantee unattended uptime.
- Review transfer and cost during operation. Compare measured bitrate and provider usage against your estimate. Recalculate after any settings change, and keep enough transfer allowance for overhead and non-stream traffic.
Music rights can be the largest unknown cost
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If it detects protected material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. YouTube also warns that a license alone may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the relevant rights holder whether the channel needs allowlisting and obtain details in writing.
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for use on Google services, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers and other royalty participants. That is a platform requirement, not a complete interpretation of Indian copyright law or a conclusion that any one license covers a particular use. The sources cited here do not establish an Indian tariff for a particular catalog or channel. Ask the relevant rights holders and qualified local counsel what applies to the recordings, compositions, territories, livestream and archive you plan to use. Do not assume that buying music, holding a general music-streaming subscription, or paying for VPS hosting supplies public livestream rights.
Common cost and reliability problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Unexpected transfer overage | Actual bitrate, extra workloads or billing units differ from the estimate | Check the encoder’s measured bitrate and provider usage report; confirm GB versus GiB and the provider’s transfer policy. Recalculate for a full 30-day month. |
| VPS cannot keep up with encoding | CPU or memory is insufficient for the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate or processing load | Test the exact configuration and observe server and stream health. Reduce processing demands or use a server with resources suited to measured needs; the listed plan specs alone do not establish capacity. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health | Encoder output, bandwidth headroom, network route or settings are unsuitable | Check the current YouTube encoder settings, measured bitrate and outbound capacity. Preview and monitor the stream rather than assuming the plan’s transfer allowance solves bandwidth problems. |
| Music stream is interrupted despite having a license | Content ID detected third-party material and the channel may not be allowlisted | Contact the rights owner about channel allowlisting and verify the permissions cover the intended live use and territories. |
| First stream is not available when expected | Channel verification or first-time encoder activation is incomplete | Verify the channel and check Live access ahead of launch; first-time encoder activation may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube’s setup guidance. |
| Stream stops after a process or server restart | The chosen encoder workflow may not restart or reconnect automatically | Test restart and recovery behavior before relying on the stream unattended; configure and validate monitoring and recovery for your setup. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VPS and encoder yourself, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and it does not require a computer, OBS or home internet connection to remain running. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, plus looping, playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. It does not remove the need to have rights to the music you upload.
