Not automatically—and the available public evidence does not establish that a 24/7 YouTube stream suppresses a channel’s regular uploads. It could compete for some of the same viewers’ time, but whether that affects your videos depends on audience behavior and content fit. Measure your channel’s upload performance before and after launch rather than assuming the stream will either hurt or help.
What YouTube’s documentation says—and does not say
YouTube describes recommendations as personalized to each viewer, appearing chiefly on the Home page and in Up Next. Its explainer identifies signals including clicks, watch time, survey responses, shares, likes, and dislikes. That description makes viewer response relevant, but it does not show that a live stream takes recommendation opportunities away from uploads—or that more stream watch time guarantees better recommendations for them. YouTube’s recommendation-system explainer also describes the system as learning from “over 80 billion pieces of information”; that broad platform description is not a creator-level prediction or a stable technical specification.
YouTube Help says viewers who return to a channel regularly are more likely to be recommended more of its videos in the future. It also says the new, casual, and regular viewer segments are audience-planning metrics and “do not affect reach or monetization.” A change in those segment counts, by itself, is not evidence that YouTube penalized your channel. YouTube’s guidance on new, casual, and regular viewers explains those categories.
The documentation reviewed explains recommendation signals and offers ways to measure performance; it does not publish a causal study showing what a continuous 24/7 stream does to regular-upload views across channels. So the careful answer is that cannibalization is possible as an audience-time concern, but an automatic algorithmic effect is not established.

How to measure the effect on your channel
Use YouTube Analytics to compare your upload library with the live stream, while keeping the question narrow: did regular uploads change after the stream began, and what changed? YouTube Studio offers Live, On demand, and Live & on demand reporting, along with measures such as watch time, audience retention, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. Channel-level live metrics include views while live, average view duration, average and peak concurrent viewers, and hours streamed. See YouTube Analytics’ live-stream metrics.
1. Establish a baseline before launch
Record several normal upload cycles before starting the stream. For each regular upload, note impressions, views, click-through rate, watch time, average view duration, traffic sources, and returning-viewer patterns where available. Keep the dates and time since publication with the figures so you can compare videos at similar stages of their lives.

2. Keep other channel changes in view
If you want to understand the stream’s association with upload performance, try to keep your upload cadence and other major channel practices steady during the comparison. Record changes you cannot hold constant, such as a new topic, publishing frequency, or an unusual rise or fall in audience demand.
3. Compare like with like
Compare similar upload formats and topics at similar times after publication. Where possible, use matched days of the week and seasonal windows. In YouTube Studio, review Live and On demand separately so the stream’s numbers do not get mixed into a single channel-wide total and obscure what happened to uploads.

4. Diagnose the metric that moved
A fall in upload views alone does not explain why views changed. Check whether impressions fell, click-through rate changed, or viewers watched for less time after clicking. Those patterns point to different possible explanations and make a raw before-and-after view count less misleading.
5. Check audience behavior, then qualify the result
Review audience overlap and behavior in the reports available to your channel. Viewer segments can help describe viewing patterns, but they do not prove an effect on reach or monetization. Treat a simple before-and-after change as observational: the stream may coincide with a change without causing it. These are practical ways to use YouTube’s documented reporting dimensions, not a YouTube-prescribed experiment.

What one channel example can—and cannot—show
AIR Media-Tech’s vendor-published case study reports that the Lesnoy channel’s stream generated 1.15 million views during March and April 2025, representing 6.3% of that channel’s views, and says the stream did not interfere with VoD performance. Those figures describe one operator’s reported results, not an independent or controlled demonstration of what another channel should expect. Read the AIR Media-Tech case study.
Should you try a 24/7 stream?
Decide based on whether continuous playback suits your content and audience, then judge the result with a consistent comparison—not on a promise that the stream will boost uploads or a fear that it will automatically harm them. Track upload impressions and views, click-through rate, watch time and retention, traffic-source mix, returning-audience behavior, live concurrent viewers, and the stream’s operating cost. Keep your regular schedule and comparable time periods visible when interpreting the numbers.
