You need a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. For a stream that must continue while your computer is off, a cloud service such as StreamNeo can loop uploaded recordings instead. Neither setup guarantees uninterrupted transmission, and YouTube may not archive a broadcast longer than 12 hours.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube also requires streamers to be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- An encoder: software on a computer is a practical starting point for a prepared visual and external audio; a hardware encoder may suit a more involved production. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started, while professional-grade hardware is an option for higher-production events. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the total outgoing stream bitrate, plus room for fluctuations.
- A program you have permission to broadcast: podcast audio, music, performances, artwork, photographs and any video loop all need rights cleared for the intended use.
- A local recording plan. YouTube’s automatic archive is not a substitute for your own copy, especially for long broadcasts.
You can begin with your existing audio equipment. A USB microphone is an optional improvement for spoken-word clarity, not a requirement; YouTube does not endorse a particular model in the guidance cited here.
Set up the first stream with an encoder
- Prepare a simple visual. Use an original branded still or a scene showing the podcast title and current episode. This is a production choice, not a YouTube requirement. Confirm that you have permission to use every image and any moving background.
- Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule it for later. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page and let viewers set reminders. Follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room and enter them in your encoder’s YouTube/RTMP destination fields. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key identifies your stream. Handle the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it, and reset it if it is exposed. YouTube’s encoder setup is described at Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Set the output format and bitrate. Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer and connection can sustain, then set the encoder’s video and audio bitrate accordingly. YouTube’s key capacity rule is that the total outgoing bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth; it recommends about 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Count any simultaneous backup feed in that total. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish one bitrate that suits every encoder and production, so use the current encoder recommendations for your chosen resolution and test against your actual connection. See Streaming tips.
- Run a test before scheduling a long broadcast. Start an unlisted or otherwise suitable test, check the Live Control Room preview, listen for clean and correctly balanced audio, and inspect playback on a phone as well as a computer. Confirm the local recording is being created and growing. YouTube recommends testing the stream and checking the preview before an event; see Streaming tips.
- Start the encoder, then verify the public watch page. Make sure the correct episode is playing, audio is present, and the stream has not stalled. Keep an operator available to monitor the feed and respond if the encoder, connection or YouTube interrupts it.
Choose a format that fits the devotional program
Horizontal or vertical video
Horizontal streams support clickable links in chat and the channel description, as well as live pre-roll or mid-roll ads. Vertical streams can be discoverable in the Shorts feed. Choose based on how viewers will watch and whether links or that discovery surface matter to your channel; YouTube outlines these format differences in its live-streaming requirements and formats.
Software or hardware encoder
A software encoder on an existing computer is usually the simpler route for a prepared image, podcast audio and basic scene changes. A hardware encoder is an option for a more elaborate setup with dedicated production equipment. In either case, someone should be able to monitor the signal and handle recovery; choosing hardware alone does not ensure continuity.

Audio and looping visuals
For spoken-word devotional programming, prioritize intelligible voice, consistent levels and a test that checks the complete signal path. If you add music, a repeating image, episode art or video, clear the rights for those assets independently. Keep the visual useful to listeners—such as the program name and episode—rather than assuming a static loop makes the underlying content eligible for monetization.
Plan session length and keep your own archive
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast a poor sole source for preserving episodes. Details are in YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

- Record the program locally while streaming, and verify that the recording file continues to grow.
- Break a long program into controlled sessions shorter than 12 hours if a YouTube archive is important, and verify each resulting segment. This reduces reliance on a single long archive but does not replace your local copy.
- Keep episode masters and metadata separately, with a backup outside the streaming computer where practical.
- For scheduled sessions, check the next event and encoder restart before the current session ends. A session boundary can make archiving and episode labeling easier, but requires a plan to restart the feed.
Clear rights before broadcasting in India
A devotional subject does not automatically make a recording free to stream. YouTube’s live-stream terms say the creator represents that they have the rights needed for worldwide use, including music licensing rights, and has met applicable requirements in the territory where the stream is available. See YouTube’s Terms of Service. This is not a determination of Indian law; if your content or distribution model raises a licensing question, get qualified India-specific advice.
Check rights separately for each element of the program:

- Photographs, illustrations, cover art, video clips and any looped background.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and resolve any allowlisting requirement before relying on licensed material.
Understand monetization and repeat programming
Live streams are subject to YouTube’s channel monetization policies; being live or devotional does not itself make a channel eligible. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its “inauthentic content” policy. A near-identical loop or unattended feed may face monetization review, so do not budget on ad eligibility without meeting the current channel and content rules. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Keep the stream running: computer or cloud
Do it yourself with an encoder
The encoder method above keeps the broadcast dependent on the computer, encoder process, power and internet connection staying available. To operate it continuously, arrange power protection where needed, keep the computer from sleeping, monitor the outgoing feed and local recording, and decide who will restart the encoder or reconnect if YouTube drops the stream. YouTube’s guidance stresses testing and monitoring, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded YouTube video or playlist live 24/7. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops it, so no computer, OBS or home connection has to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or the encoder will not connect | Incorrect stream URL or key, an inactive event, or a connection problem | Recheck the Live Control Room destination and key, confirm the event is ready, and reconnect. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Buffering, dropped frames or a stream that disconnects | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the computer/encoder cannot sustain its output | Reduce output bitrate or resolution, check actual upload capacity, and leave about 20% headroom above the total bitrate. Include a backup feed in the total if one is running. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or distorted | Wrong encoder input, muted source, unsuitable levels or a routing issue | Check the selected microphone or mixer input, mute state, levels and monitoring path; test again before returning to a long broadcast. |
| Live stream is interrupted or replaced | A Content ID match or other stream interruption | Check YouTube’s notice and resolve the matched material. If licensed, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID. |
| No YouTube replay appears after a long session | The broadcast exceeded 12 hours | Do not rely on YouTube to capture sessions longer than 12 hours. Use your local recording and verify its segments. |
| The broadcast stopped while unattended | Power, internet, computer sleep, encoder failure or a YouTube disconnect | For a local encoder, check power, sleep settings, connection and encoder logs, then restart and confirm the preview. A cloud setup can remove the home computer and connection from the path, but should not be treated as a promise of uninterrupted availability. |
