Good streaming etiquette starts before you go live: tell viewers how to participate, prepare moderation, and make space for respectful conversation. There is no single etiquette code that fits every channel, but clear expectations and active moderation help newcomers understand the room and help you respond when chat goes off track.
Set the tone before viewers arrive
Decide what kind of conversation fits your stream, then make the expectations easy to find. YouTube lets channel owners set up to three channel guidelines and a welcome message; its examples include being civil and respectful, staying on topic, welcoming questions, avoiding self-promotion or spam, and challenging arguments rather than people. Viewers can see channel guidelines before participating in live chat. (YouTube Help, “Set your channel guidelines.”)
Keep rules concise and actionable. For example, you might ask viewers to stay on topic, avoid posting personal information, and disagree with ideas without attacking people. Adapt the wording to your content and audience rather than treating any sample rule as universal.
On YouTube, custom guidelines set expectations but do not enforce themselves: YouTube Help says they “won’t cause comments, posts, or live chat messages to be automatically hidden or removed.” Community Guidelines still apply, and you need to use moderation controls or moderators to respond to violations.

Prepare moderation before you start
Know who will watch chat and what they can do. YouTube recommends assigning live chat moderators to interact with viewers, remove inappropriate messages, and hide abusive users. For a solo or small stream, review the platform’s controls in advance so you are not searching for them in the middle of a broadcast.
Twitch’s moderation setup offers several kinds of controls, including custom chat rules, moderator roles, email or phone verification options, follower or subscriber restrictions, a short non-moderator chat delay, and blocking hyperlinks by sending them to a review queue. Availability can vary; Twitch says some features may not yet be available to every account. Choose restrictions in proportion to your chat volume and the level of participation you want, since added friction can also make it harder for new viewers to join.

On either platform, moderation is a combination of prevention and response. Verification requirements or a delay can reduce some problems before messages appear; reviewing, removing, hiding, or reporting content addresses behavior after it occurs. Twitch’s harassment guidance also points creators toward chat rules, reporting, moderation settings, and moderators. Its Community Guidelines cover conduct across the service, including video, chat, whispers, and accounts, and violations can lead to enforcement such as content removal, loss of monetization features, warnings, or account suspension. Twitch describes those guidelines as a living document, so check the current rules for your platform.
Keep chat welcoming and moving
Make participation feel invited, not demanded. Greet people when you can, answer relevant questions, and give viewers enough context to follow what is happening on screen. If chat is quiet, offer a specific prompt related to the game or stream rather than pressuring viewers to speak. Do not call out someone for lurking; watching without posting is a valid way to take part.

When a viewer asks a question you cannot answer immediately, acknowledge it and return to it when practical. If a conversation becomes heated, steer attention back to the topic and address the behavior without turning the exchange into a personal attack. Set a consistent standard for regulars and newcomers alike.
Use audience features when they suit the moment. YouTube describes Live Q&A and polls as ways to involve viewers, and recommends holding potentially inappropriate live chat messages for review. A poll can help viewers choose between reasonable options; a Q&A can give questions a clear place in a busy chat. Neither replaces moderation.

Handle common etiquette problems consistently
- Spam or repeated self-promotion: Point to the channel rule and use the platform’s available moderation controls. Do not assume every channel has the same policy about self-promotion; follow the host channel’s posted expectations when you are a guest.
- Personal attacks or harassment: Set a boundary, remove or hide abusive messages where appropriate, and report behavior through platform tools when warranted. Do not encourage an audience pile-on.
- Off-topic arguments: Redirect the conversation once. If it continues, apply the rule consistently rather than letting an argument take over the broadcast.
- Links or potentially inappropriate messages: Use review or link controls where available, and check held messages before deciding whether to show them.
- A viewer challenges a moderation decision: Explain the relevant rule briefly if doing so will not escalate things; otherwise, move on and handle any appeal after the stream.
Keep channel rules separate from platform rules
Your channel rules can explain what you expect in your community, but they do not replace the platform’s policies. Twitch says its Community Guidelines apply across its service and frames safety as a shared foundation for streamers, moderators, and everyone in chat. YouTube’s channel guidelines likewise do not automatically remove messages. Review the current platform rules as well as your own settings, especially when platform controls or policies change.
