Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode generally works without an internet connection once you have access to it, but offline play does not make the game free. GTA Online is a separate mode, and owning its standalone version does not include Story Mode.
What works offline: Story Mode, not GTA Online
Rockstar Games Customer Support says Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection. Its PC instructions specifically explain how to launch GTAV offline for Story Mode. That guidance does not mean GTA Online works offline.
Offline access and ownership are separate: you need the Story Mode entitlement before you can play that mode. Rockstar’s support guidance does not describe Story Mode as free.
What to expect on PC
On PC, Rockstar requires an internet connection for activation and periodic entitlement verification. After verification, you can play offline again, but you may need to reconnect if verification is due or you want to use online-dependent features such as GTA Online, cloud-save syncing, or updates.

Set up offline Story Mode in Rockstar Games Launcher
- Connect to the internet, sign in to Rockstar Games Launcher, and install any required updates.
- Open Settings, then select Grand Theft Auto V.
- Enter
-scofflineonlyin the Launch Arguments field. - Launch the game. Rockstar’s offline launch instructions are for Story Mode.
Rockstar lists separate storage requirements by PC edition: 105 GB for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and 125 GB for Grand Theft Auto V Legacy in its 2025 requirements. These are edition-specific published figures, not a universal recommendation for every setup. See Rockstar’s PC system requirements.
If you own only GTA Online
If you bought the standalone version of GTA Online, Rockstar says you must purchase Story Mode separately through the associated platform store to access it. What console players should know
Rockstar says a Rockstar Games account is not required to play Story Mode on console. That does not establish whether a particular console installation can be set up entirely offline: the cited guidance does not detail platform-account, license, download, or first-run requirements. Confirm that your console account has the Story Mode license and check the platform’s own offline-play requirements.
Did a free GTA Online trial include Story Mode?
No. Rockstar’s documented free trial ran from November 11 through November 17, 2025, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and applied to the standalone GTA Online product—not to a free copy of GTA V Story Mode. That trial has ended. The cited information does not establish a current free Story Mode offer. See Rockstar’s trial announcement.

Do you need a Rockstar account?
Rockstar says a Rockstar Games account is required on PC for installation and online play, while it is not required for Story Mode on console. These statements address Rockstar accounts; they do not resolve other platform-specific setup or license requirements. See Rockstar’s account requirements.

In its PC support article, last updated February 28, 2025, Rockstar Games Customer Support says: “Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection to play.” Its instructions cover offline Story Mode play, not free access or offline GTA Online.
