For one repeating video, add an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a rotating playlist, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Connect OBS to a stream created in YouTube Studio, test the picture and audio in Live Control Room, and monitor stream health once live. A long-running broadcast still needs a reliable computer, encoder, and internet connection.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to play | OBS source | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| One video file repeating | Media Source | Enable Loop in the source properties. Loop is off by default. |
| Several files in sequence or shuffled | VLC Video | Add the files to the playlist and use Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; for 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation says to install 64-bit VLC. |
OBS lists common Media Source formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The source documentation does not promise gapless transitions for every file, so test the actual media and audio before relying on a continuous broadcast. OBS Media Sources
Set up a single looping video in OBS
- Select a scene. In OBS, select or create the scene that will carry the prerecorded video.
- Add the file. In the Sources dock, select +, choose Media Source, and add the local video file.
- Enable looping. Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. Confirm that the preview shows the intended video.
- Check the audio. Play the source and watch the OBS audio meters. Make sure the desired sound is present and that other audio sources are not unintentionally mixed in.
Set up a looping playlist
- Install VLC. Install VLC before adding the source. On 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC; otherwise the VLC Video source may not appear.
- Add the playlist source. In the scene’s Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the video files. Add the files you want to play and arrange them in the intended order. Enable Loop Playlist if it is not already enabled; OBS documents it as on by default. Shuffle Playlist is off by default.
- Check visibility behavior. OBS documents the default behavior as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting when it becomes visible. If you hide and show the source as part of your scene workflow, adjust its visibility behavior to continue, pause, or stop as needed.
- Test a complete cycle. Preview the start, a transition between files, and the return to the beginning. Confirm the playlist’s audio and video behave as intended.
OBS documents the source controls and their defaults in its Media Sources guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says encoder livestreaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Confirm eligibility and account status in YouTube Studio before preparing the broadcast. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream you intend to use and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS’s stream settings, choose the applicable YouTube connection workflow and enter the stream URL and key if prompted. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check the incoming picture, sound, and stream health messages in Live Control Room. Begin the YouTube broadcast using the workflow shown there.
- Monitor the live output. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and messages and confirm that the expected scene remains on screen. YouTube recommends testing and choosing a quality that the upload connection can sustain.
YouTube’s connection instructions explain stream URLs and keys: YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder. Do not assume that a successful OBS preview alone proves a broadcast is live to viewers; verify the status in Live Control Room.

Choose encoder quality and bitrate
For RTMP/RTMPS encoder streams, YouTube’s current encoder help lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use the bitrate-table row matching the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
| H.264 format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are values in YouTube Help’s encoder settings table, accessed in 2026; they are recommendations for those formats, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain them. YouTube advises matching quality to available upload bandwidth and running a speed test. Leave headroom for normal connection variation rather than selecting a bitrate that consumes all measured upload capacity.

Plan around YouTube’s long-stream limits
YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If the replay or rewind matters, plan broadcasts in segments shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording as a backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams · YouTube Help: DVR on live streams
OBS’s loop controls repeat media, but they do not establish that every file will transition seamlessly or that a computer, encoder, and internet connection will run indefinitely without interruption. Test the intended files, scene, encoder settings, audio, and connection, then monitor the broadcast.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and every audio track, and review YouTube’s copyright and live-streaming rules. Repeated or reused material can also raise channel-policy concerns; a stream being technically live does not itself establish that the content complies with YouTube’s policies. Check the current guidance in YouTube Help: Copyright and YouTube Help: YouTube channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common looping-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The Media Source plays once and stops | Loop is off. | Open the source properties and enable Loop, then test the end and restart. |
| VLC Video is missing from the source menu | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; if using 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source menu. |
| The playlist ends instead of repeating | Loop Playlist is off. | Open VLC Video properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| A playlist item does not play as expected after a scene change | The source may be stopping when hidden. | Review its visibility behavior. OBS documents stop when hidden and restart when visible as the default; choose continue, pause, or stop to match the scene workflow. |
| Viewers see buffering or YouTube reports poor stream health | The selected bitrate may exceed sustainable upload bandwidth, or the connection may be unstable. | Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the selected format, run a speed test, choose a sustainable quality, and check Live Control Room messages. |
| The video is visible but viewers cannot hear it | The source may lack audible content, or OBS audio routing or levels may be wrong. | Play the source in OBS, inspect the audio meters and mixer, and verify the Live Control Room preview before going live. |
| The stream is live but no replay appears afterward | A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. | Keep broadcasts shorter than 12 hours if archiving matters, and save a local recording as backup. |
