When a YouTube radio stream goes silent, check whether the relevant OBS audio meter is moving at the moment the sound disappears. A flat meter points to playback, device, volume, or capture; a moving meter means audio is reaching OBS, so check mute, fader, stream routing, and then compare a local recording with YouTube playback.
Trace the sound from the source to YouTube
Audio passes through several stages: the radio source or device, operating-system and application levels, OBS capture and processing, OBS stream output, and YouTube playback. Find the first stage where sound vanishes rather than changing settings at random. The exact controls depend on your operating system, OBS release, and whether the radio enters through a media source, browser source, desktop capture, or physical device.
- Confirm the source is playing. Listen in the originating app or device, and check that the expected source is present in the OBS scene currently live. For physical audio hardware, first check its connection and controls.
- Check system and app levels. Follow the operating system’s volume mixer to confirm that the source application is not muted or turned down. OBS recommends checking the device, operating-system mixer, and individual application volume in sequence. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

If the OBS meter is flat
Do not start by changing YouTube settings: first restore audio into OBS. Check that the radio has not stopped, the intended source is active, and OBS is capturing the right device or application. If a device disconnected, reconnect it and confirm the selected input. Inspect app and system volume, then temporarily disable filters to see whether the signal returns.
If the source continues playing but the meter remains flat, verify the capture method for that source in your installed OBS version. Device and application-capture labels can differ between systems and releases, so confirm the selected source rather than relying on a menu path from another setup. If the OBS meter moves but viewers hear silence
A moving meter establishes that audio is reaching OBS; it does not by itself prove that audio is included in the encoded stream. Check these output controls while the sound is present:
- Make sure the source is not muted and its fader has not been pulled down.
- Confirm the source is routed to the stream output and that the stream’s selected audio track is enabled in your OBS version. OBS’s interface includes a warning when an output has no tracks selected; mixer layout and labels may vary by release. OBS Studio English interface strings
- Do not treat monitoring as proof of stream output. Monitoring sends audio to a configured listening device; stream output determines whether it reaches the encoded program. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
Use a local recording to separate OBS from YouTube
Make a recording during the fault and listen to it. This comparison is useful because it separates missing audio in OBS’s output from a problem with the live delivery or playback:

YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder and inspecting the local archive. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy, the outbound connection may be involved. Use the YouTube live-stream troubleshooting steps and dashboard diagnostics rather than assuming every silence is a YouTube fault.
What to check when the audio fails only after a while
Run the meter and recording checks while the silence is actually occurring. Note whether the source itself stopped, whether OBS still receives it, and whether the local output remains audible. Those observations can distinguish a source or capture interruption from a problem after OBS output. A delayed failure alone does not establish a particular cause such as a media-source restart, device sleep, or network fault; test those only if they fit the way your setup is built.

When channel format is relevant
Channel layout is not the first explanation to assume for sudden silence. YouTube documents live ingestion for mono, stereo, and 5.1 audio, and warns that other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo. For a 5.1 stream specifically, YouTube lists a 48 kHz sample rate and 384 Kbps audio bitrate, with compatible encoder and protocol settings. Those are 5.1 requirements, not general repair settings for an ordinary stereo radio stream. YouTube’s 5.1 live-audio guidance
Validate the fix without risking another long silent run
- Make a normal test recording using the same scene, source, and settings you intend to stream with.
- Listen to the recording from beginning to end, checking that the audio remains present and that the final output does not clip above 0 dBFS.
- Start or resume the YouTube stream and verify playback in YouTube, not just in OBS monitoring.
- If it fails again, note the time and compare the source, OBS meter, local recording, and YouTube playback at that moment.
