VLC must be installed, and the source must be in the scene you send to YouTube Live.
Choose the right OBS media source
Use VLC Video when you need multiple files in one playlist. OBS’s built-in Media Source is intended for an individual local file and has its own per-file loop setting. The OBS documentation lists both source types for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
| Source | Best for | Key behavior | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC Video | Playing multiple files as a playlist | Playlist-level shuffle and loop controls | VLC installed; OBS’s guide says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC |
| Media Source | Playing one local video file | Per-file loop, restart-when-active, and show-nothing-when-playback-ends controls | No VLC prerequisite stated for this source |
OBS documents formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM for Media Source. If you need a sequence rather than a single clip, use VLC Video instead. OBS Media Sources documentation
Set up a VLC playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. Install VLC before adding the playlist source. Match its architecture to OBS: the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Open the scene you will stream. In OBS, select the scene that should contain the video sequence. Scenes and their sources define the layout sent to the stream.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the Sources dock, add a VLC Video source. Create a new source or select an existing one as appropriate.
- Add and order the files. Add the local video files to the source’s playlist, then arrange the list in the intended playback order.
- Set the sequence behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play the files in listed order. Turn Loop Playlist off for one pass, or on to restart from the beginning after the last item. OBS documents shuffle off and looping on as the defaults.
- Place the source in the scene. Make sure it is visible in the scene being streamed, then resize and position it to fit your composition. Check that other sources do not cover it.
- Check audio and playback. Start playback in OBS and confirm the video advances as expected and the audio is audible at the intended level.
VLC Video also offers controls for visibility behavior, network caching, audio tracks, and subtitles. Change those only when your source or playback needs them. OBS Media Sources documentation · OBS Sources Guide

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you plan to use.
- Copy the encoder details from YouTube. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder workflow.
- Enter them in OBS. In OBS’s streaming settings, choose the YouTube connection method available in your setup and enter the URL and key supplied by YouTube. Keep the key private: it is a credential, not something to show on screen or publish.
- Start a rehearsal and preview it. Test with audio and video similar to the planned stream, then check the incoming feed in Live Control Room before starting the event. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before a live stream.
- Monitor the live feed. While streaming, watch YouTube’s preview and check both audio and video quality.
For YouTube’s encoder workflow and setup details, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, YouTube live streaming tips – Computer, and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The playlist setup itself does not establish a special bitrate or resolution: use settings suitable for your intended stream and test the result in Live Control Room.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is missing or will not load: confirm VLC is installed. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as specified by OBS.
- Clips play in an unexpected order: check the playlist order and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off.
- The playlist stops after the last file: enable Loop Playlist if you want it to start again automatically.
- The video does not appear in the stream: confirm the VLC Video source is in the scene selected for streaming, is visible, and is not obscured by another source.
- The YouTube preview does not show the expected feed: verify that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the selected YouTube stream, then test and preview again before going live.
- Viewers cannot hear the clip: check the source’s audio track selection if relevant, and verify the audio in OBS and YouTube’s incoming preview during rehearsal.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving OBS or a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
