Test Mumbai first, but do not assume it will outperform Singapore. For an India-sourced stream, a nearby region is a sensible starting point; the better choice is the one that sustains your actual RTMPS stream with fewer interruptions and healthy YouTube stream status. No official comparison establishes which region has the better route from your ISP to YouTube ingest.
What the VPS location does—and does not—change
The VPS sends your encoder output to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. YouTube then transcodes live input for viewers across devices and network conditions. The server’s location is therefore not a direct promise of better playback for viewers in India or elsewhere; it affects the path from the VPS to YouTube ingest.
Google Cloud lists Mumbai (asia-south1) and Singapore (asia-southeast1) as locations for its Live Stream API. Its guidance identifies latency, cost, resiliency, and proximity to other cloud services as region-selection considerations, and says an input endpoint or channel cannot be moved after creation. Availability of that API in both regions does not establish that every VPS provider, Compute Engine product, or machine type is available in both on equivalent terms. AWS likewise recommends ingesting live content in the region closest to the source stream. This supports trying Mumbai first for an India-origin feed, but does not prove that Mumbai has a better route to YouTube than Singapore from your particular ISP or provider. How to compare the two regions fairly
Test with the provider and workload you expect to use. A region label or a brief speed test is not a substitute for observing the continuous stream itself.
- Choose comparable instances. Use the same provider, equivalent instance size, operating system, encoder, and configuration in Mumbai and Singapore. Verify that each instance’s outbound bandwidth limit is adequate for your selected stream bitrate.
- Use the same source and settings. Run the same representative video, including its normal audio and movement, at the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement. YouTube live encoder settings
- Send to the intended YouTube ingest endpoint over RTMPS. Keep the endpoint, stream settings, and test conditions consistent when comparing regions. RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL; YouTube’s developer guide specifies port 443. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide
- Observe sustained delivery. Compare interruptions, packet loss, reconnects, and YouTube’s stream-health messages over a meaningful test period. YouTube advises monitoring stream health during the event; one short successful connection cannot establish continuous reliability.
- Compare operating costs and recovery. Check recurring data-transfer charges for a long-running outbound stream, instance egress limits, how easily you can restart or recover the encoder, and what regional resilience your plan actually provides.
Choose the region that performs better under this test and remains manageable at the actual recurring cost. Neither region alone guarantees uninterrupted end-to-end streaming.

Set encoder bitrate and keyframes for the stream
Use the YouTube settings row matching your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec. The following H.264 examples are YouTube-published minimum and recommended bitrates, not measurements of a particular VPS or a guarantee that a network path will sustain them. YouTube live encoder settings

- Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR).
- Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Allow network headroom above the video bitrate. Size against the instance’s sustained outbound capability, not just a nominal port speed or an advertised public IP.
- Run an upload speed test and then confirm the result in YouTube stream health while the encoder is sending representative content.
Budget for outbound traffic and instance limits
A continuous stream sends data out of the VPS for as long as it runs. Estimate recurring transfer charges from the intended bitrate and running time using the provider’s current pricing and billing configuration; do not assume transfer to YouTube is free. Google Cloud documents per-instance bandwidth limits that depend on machine type, network tier, and traffic routing, and its pricing documentation covers network data transfer. For a like-for-like Mumbai–Singapore comparison, include the same instance class and expected monthly stream hours in both estimates. A cheaper instance may still be unsuitable if its egress limit cannot sustain the chosen bitrate. Provider pricing and region inventory change, so check current terms rather than relying on a generic regional cost comparison.
Continuous-stream checks before relying on either VPS
- Confirm the chosen provider currently offers the required instance and adequate outbound bandwidth in the selected region.
- Configure YouTube ingest with RTMPS and the valid endpoint and stream key; RTMPS uses port 443 according to YouTube’s developer guide.
- Test the complete encoder workload from the VPS with representative audio and movement.
- Watch YouTube stream-health indicators and note packet loss, interruptions, or reconnects during a sustained test.
- Check transfer billing and instance limits for the full expected running time.
- Plan how the encoder will restart and how you will notice and respond to a dropped stream. Region choice by itself is not a recovery plan.
