Retry the affected video, lower playback quality, and compare another device or connection before deciding that the creator’s stream is at fault. A freeze at a live-to-replay boundary alone does not establish that DVR caused it.
First identify where and when playback freezes
“Between VODs” can describe different failures: a video may stop near its ending, a queue may fail to advance to the next item, or a live stream’s replay may stall as it becomes an archived video. Those cases do not point to one confirmed cause. Start by noting exactly what stops and where.
- Does the same VOD freeze at the same point when you reopen it?
- Does every item transition fail, or does the next video play if you select it manually?
- Do unrelated YouTube videos also freeze?
- Does the audio stop too, or does only the picture appear frozen?
- Can you reproduce the issue on another device or internet connection?
- Did other viewers experience the freeze, or is it visible in the original live broadcast?
These comparisons help distinguish a problem that follows a particular video or transition from one that follows a viewer’s device or connection. They are diagnostic clues, not a guaranteed way to identify the cause.
Troubleshoot playback as a viewer
- Reopen the affected video. Reload the page or close and reopen the video. If a queue stopped between items, try selecting the next VOD manually. Note whether the same item or timestamp fails again.
- Lower the quality manually. Open the player’s quality settings and select a lower resolution. If playback improves, record the setting that worked; this is a useful comparison, not proof of a particular network or encoding fault.
- Try another connection. Test the same video using a different internet connection, if available. If the symptom changes, that is useful evidence to include in a report.
- Test another supported device. Try the video on another supported phone, computer, or TV. For TV playback, YouTube also suggests trying an alternate route such as casting from another device or connecting a laptop by HDMI.
- Refresh the app and device. Close and reopen the YouTube app, restart the device, and install available app or system updates.
- Report an unresolved playback issue. Use YouTube’s Help and Feedback option after the problem occurs. Include the video link, approximate timestamp, device and app, quality setting, whether audio stopped, and whether another device reproduced the freeze.
YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance includes trying another connection or supported device, adjusting quality, restarting the app or device, and updating software. Its Help and Feedback route is the next step if those checks do not resolve the issue.

When to ask the channel owner to check stream health
If multiple viewers report the same freeze or the problem appears in the original live broadcast, ask the channel owner to inspect YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and stream health. A creator-side stream health report can reveal issues that a viewer cannot diagnose from playback alone.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation lists configuration problems such as codec and bitrate issues, mismatches between primary and backup streams, and keyframes sent too far apart. It says keyframes should be four seconds apart or less; longer intervals can cause buffering. The API documentation’s warning is: “Currently, keyframes are not being sent often enough, which will cause buffering.” That is relevant when stream health identifies a keyframe issue, not a diagnosis for every freeze between VODs.

If only one viewer on one device is affected, continue with the viewer-side checks first. This is a practical diagnostic split based on YouTube’s separate viewer playback and creator stream-health guidance, not a rule that guarantees which side is responsible.
What DVR and archived broadcasts can—and cannot—explain
YouTube Live DVR gives viewers controls such as pausing and rewinding during a live stream; when playback resumes, it continues from the paused point. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and a device or app can impose a lower limit. That limitation concerns rewind availability; it does not by itself explain a freeze between a replay and another VOD.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes DVR controls and explains that a completed broadcast is converted into a YouTube video. The archived video may not be available immediately after the broadcast ends; the delay depends on stream length. That conversion timing is distinct from proof that DVR caused a playback stall.
YouTube’s playback guidance also includes a Primetime Channels note: “The lower the broadcast delay, the less buffer the video player will have.” That statement is specific to its Primetime Channels guidance. Do not treat changing a gaming livestream’s broadcast delay as a general fix unless that control is actually available for the stream in question.
