The cheapest way to livestream a saved gaming replay from home is to use a computer you already own with free OBS Studio, provided it can play the file and encode a test stream reliably. Start at 720p, 30 fps and a 2 Mbps video bitrate, check your upload connection, and test privately before going public. You do not need to buy a capture card or dedicated encoder for a replay already stored on that computer.
Start with your existing computer and OBS
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming and says expensive equipment is not needed to get started. For a replay file on the same computer you will use to stream, try a software encoder such as YouTube Live with OBS Studio before buying anything. A capture card is not a default requirement for this same-computer workflow; it is relevant to some setups where the video comes from a separate console.
OBS’s minimum system requirements describe what is needed to run the software, not a guarantee that a particular computer can stream well. Performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. An existing GPU or integrated hardware encoder may reduce CPU workload, but test your current setup before considering an upgrade.
Set a modest starting quality and bitrate
For a first test, use 720p at 30 frames per second. YouTube’s current encoder settings recommend a 2 Mbps video bitrate for that resolution and frame rate. It is a starting recommendation, not a guarantee of consistent quality or a trouble-free stream for every game, scene or internet connection.

- Video codec: H.264 when using RTMP or RTMPS.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video bitrate: 2 Mbps for the 720p, 30 fps starting test.
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations. Make sure the stream’s total bitrate fits your available upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, so a connection that only just matches the configured bitrate may not be enough in practice.
Configure YouTube and test the replay
Make sure the channel can go live
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available. YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements say streamers must be at least 16.

Create the stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create a live stream and select the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream key into the matching stream settings in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it, because someone with access may be able to stream to your channel.
- In OBS, make the saved gameplay video the source and confirm that its audio is included. Exact controls vary by OBS release and operating system.
- Start an unlisted or private test stream. Check the preview, listen for game audio, and watch stream health in Live Control Room.
- Test representative motion and sound from the actual replay before announcing a public stream.
If you want the replay to repeat continuously, verify that behavior in your installed OBS version with a private test. The exact looping controls can vary, so do not assume a source will repeat simply because the stream remains live.
Check the connection before upgrading hardware
Run an upload-speed test and compare the result with the total bitrate you plan to send, leaving YouTube’s recommended headroom. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; stability matters too. Watch stream health during the private test and again while live.

If Wi-Fi is unstable, trying an Ethernet connection is a reasonable low-cost troubleshooting step, not a YouTube requirement. If the stream still struggles, identify the bottleneck before spending money: it may be upload reliability, encoding overload, or the replay coming from a separate device. OBS performance varies with settings and scene complexity, so an upgrade is not automatically the answer.
When extra equipment is worth considering
- Capture card: Consider one when the replay source is an external console or another device that needs to feed the streaming computer. It is not established as necessary for a file already on that computer.
- Hardware encoder or a different computer: Consider a change only if a real test shows encoding overload or dropped frames. Existing hardware encoding may help, but OBS requirements alone cannot predict the result.
- Microphone or webcam: Optional for a replay-only broadcast; useful only if you intend to add commentary or camera footage.
- Ethernet cable: Worth trying if Wi-Fi reliability is the problem. No particular cable category is required by the cited YouTube guidance.
YouTube recognizes both software and hardware encoder workflows, but does not prescribe a capture card or a dedicated hardware encoder for replay files played and encoded on the same computer. Buy only after testing shows what your setup actually lacks.

Check game and music rights before streaming
Owning a game does not automatically give you permission to rebroadcast or monetize its footage or music. YouTube says monetization of game content depends on commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. It also cautions that extended gameplay footage with little beyond gameplay may not qualify for monetization without the appropriate permissions; instructional commentary tied to the live action can be relevant.
Check the policy for the specific game and publisher, and assess music rights separately. Publisher rules differ, so general platform guidance cannot settle the permissions for an unspecified title.
