You can run a continuous YouTube radio-style stream from a Linux server by using Liquidsoap to schedule and play audio, encoding the output with FFmpeg, and sending it to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS. A systemd service keeps the encoder process running and restarts it after a local failure. You do not need Icecast unless you also want a separate internet-radio endpoint for listeners.
How the setup fits together
Liquidsoap handles the radio automation: selecting files, building playlists and producing a continuous program. Its YouTube output uses FFmpeg-backed encoding to create an audiovisual live feed. The Linux server sends that feed to YouTube Live using the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. systemd supervises Liquidsoap as a foreground process.
Although the program may be audio-led, this is an encoder-based YouTube live workflow. Include a video component in the output; a fixed image or gently changing visual is a straightforward production choice. The available guidance does not prescribe a particular visual design.
YouTube Live and Icecast are different destinations
| Option | Destination | Server role | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live encoder output | A YouTube watch page and its audience | Liquidsoap sends an encoded live feed to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. | You want the station to appear as a YouTube live stream. |
| Icecast endpoint | A radio player or directory using your station’s stream URL | Icecast serves source audio to listeners; Liquidsoap can send it an audio stream. | You also want a conventional internet-radio endpoint, potentially with mount points. |
Icecast describes itself as usable to create “an Internet radio station or a privately running jukebox and many things in between.” It is optional for a YouTube-only setup; it is not a relay you must install to reach YouTube.

What you need before configuring the server
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide. Complete this ahead of your planned launch.
- A Linux host with sustained upload capacity. Choose a bitrate for your video settings and leave headroom for a connection that may fluctuate. A VPS is an option if you do not have a suitable always-on machine, but it requires server administration and sufficient sustained network capacity.
- Liquidsoap and FFmpeg support. Install a Liquidsoap build whose YouTube output and FFmpeg encoding support match the syntax you plan to use. Output syntax and available options vary by installed version.
- Audio and visual files you are entitled to broadcast. Clear rights for the actual recordings, compositions and visuals in the relevant territories before streaming. Requirements depend on the rights and locations involved; there is no universal clearance formula established here.
- A service account and readable configuration. Run the stream as a restricted, unprivileged user rather than root, and ensure it can read the playlist and media files it needs.
Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or open a live stream in Live Control Room and select the stream’s ingest settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Configure Liquidsoap’s YouTube RTMP output with the ingest URL and key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted option, where available.
- Keep the key secret. YouTube defines it as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not put a real key in a public script, repository, command history or shared example. If it is exposed, reset it through Live Control Room and update the server configuration.
- Start the encoder only when you are ready to send the feed. Stopping the encoder stops sending content; YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose YouTube’s encoder settings
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs, and AAC or MP3 for audio. RTMPS is recommended over unencrypted RTMP.
Example H.264 bitrate figures
| Video setting | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest figures, accessed in 2026; they are not a guarantee that a particular VPS or home connection can sustain the selected rate. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the resolution and frame rate you choose, since recommendations can change. Its advanced audio guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo sample rate and 128 kbps for stereo audio bitrate. Test with representative audio and motion, and do not treat the minimum video bitrate as a safe target if your upload capacity varies.

Configure Liquidsoap and systemd
Liquidsoap’s production guidance says: “In production, run liquidsoap in the foreground under a service manager, such as systemd on Linux or launchd on macOS.” The point is to let systemd observe and restart the process; do not daemonize Liquidsoap behind systemd.
Liquidsoap documents a YouTube live RTMP output using a stream key and FFmpeg H.264/AAC encoding. Treat that configuration syntax as version-sensitive: use the documentation for your installed release and verify it before enabling the service. Keep credentials out of broadly readable files; restrict access to the configuration and any secret it references.

Test the stream and keep it observable
- Run a test with the files, audio levels, visual content and motion representative of the real schedule.
- Measure server upload capacity and compare it with the chosen video and audio bitrate, allowing headroom rather than targeting a fluctuating connection’s limit.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health while the encoder is sending. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a successful process launch means a healthy ingest.
- After a failure, check
systemctl status radioandjournalctl -u radiobefore changing settings. Match the journal timestamp and error to YouTube’s stream-health status. - For longer operations, arrange an operator check or external monitoring appropriate to your needs; a local service manager cannot diagnose every remote ingest failure.
Common problems and fixes
The stream does not appear in Live Control Room
Confirm the channel’s live-streaming feature is enabled, the correct ingest URL and stream key are configured, and the encoder process is running. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enablement may take up to 24 hours. If the key was exposed or may be wrong, reset it in Live Control Room and update the server’s protected configuration.
Liquidsoap exits immediately
Run liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/radio.liq with the installed version, then inspect journalctl -u radio. Check configuration syntax, the actual binary and file paths, service-account permissions, and whether the installed build includes the needed FFmpeg and YouTube output support.

YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops
Compare the actual output bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations and test sustained upload capacity. A nominal speed test or minimum bitrate does not ensure a connection can carry the feed reliably. Inspect encoder and network errors in the journal, then verify the stream health in Live Control Room.
The process restarts but the broadcast is still unavailable
systemd can restart a local process that exits, but it cannot correct an invalid key, missing media, unsupported encoder setting, network outage or YouTube-side issue by itself. Identify which layer failed using journal logs and Live Control Room; resolve that specific fault rather than treating a service restart as proof the feed recovered.
Listeners need a non-YouTube radio player
Add an Icecast output only if you want a separate station URL for radio players or directories. Configure Liquidsoap to send audio to Icecast as well as, or instead of, the YouTube audiovisual output according to the destinations you need.
Cost and hosting choices
This software workflow requires a Linux host; that may be an existing machine or a rented VPS. A hosted Linux server is useful when no suitable always-on machine is available, but compare sustained network capacity and consider the administration it requires. No specific provider price or plan is established here. The figures above are YouTube bitrate recommendations, not hosting costs.
