How to Stream Recorded Nintendo Switch Gameplay VODs Continuously on YouTube

Use OBS to loop an existing Switch gameplay file to YouTube, understand capture-card and archive limits, and review Nintendo’s rules for repeated footage.

To stream an existing Nintendo Switch gameplay VOD continuously on YouTube, add the video file to OBS as a Media Source, enable Loop, and send the encoder output to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. The computer running OBS, its internet connection, and the encoder must remain operational. Nintendo says you cannot currently stream gameplay directly from a Switch to YouTube; a capture card is only needed if you still have to record footage from the console.

How do I stream prerecorded gameplay on YouTube?

This workflow is for a VOD file that is already on your computer. OBS loops that file and sends it as an encoder livestream; YouTube receives it as a live event.

  1. Check YouTube livestream access. The channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance
  2. Create or prepare the live event in YouTube Studio. Choose the encoder workflow and obtain the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. Exact interface labels can change, so follow the current Live Control Room prompts.
  3. Add the VOD in OBS. In the scene you intend to broadcast, select Sources → + → Media Source, choose the local video file, and enable Loop. Confirm that the source plays and that its audio meters respond. OBS documents looping for Media Sources in its Media Source guide.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key (or connect using the available account workflow). If entering details manually, use the stream URL and key shown by YouTube.
  5. Test before going public. Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the incoming signal and preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check the picture, audio, and loop behavior. Use a private or unlisted test event if you need to check the setup without a public broadcast.
  6. Start the YouTube event and monitor it. Starting the encoder feed and starting the event in YouTube are distinct actions in the encoder workflow. Confirm the event is live in the Live Control Room. Keep OBS, the computer, and the network connection running for the duration.

Resolution, bitrate, and connection headroom

Set OBS’s output to a resolution and frame rate supported by your source and desired broadcast, then use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for that format rather than choosing a bitrate blindly. Bitrate affects required upload capacity and stream quality. YouTube recommends having about 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate; other devices or network traffic can consume that headroom. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder guidance for current recommendations.

Use a stable wired connection where practical, close bandwidth-heavy uploads, and test the stream under the conditions you expect during the broadcast. No bitrate setting can compensate for an unreliable uplink or a computer that sleeps, crashes, or loses power.

How do I loop a video on OBS?

A Media Source is the relevant OBS source for a local VOD. Enable its Loop option so playback restarts when it reaches the end. Make sure the scene containing that source is the active output scene, and check whether other sources or audio are also being sent. If you change the selected file, verify the new file plays and that looping remains enabled.

  • Black or missing picture: Check that the selected file exists and is readable, the Media Source is visible, and the scene is active.
  • No sound: Check the source’s audio meters and OBS audio routing, then confirm audio in YouTube’s preview before going live.
  • Video ends instead of repeating: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled.
  • Stream drops or buffers: Check OBS’s connection status, available upload bandwidth, and whether the computer or network is under load. Reduce output demands if needed and run another test.

Can I stream Switch gameplay directly to YouTube?

Nintendo says gameplay cannot currently be streamed directly from a Switch to YouTube. The continuous-stream workflow therefore needs a computer encoder such as OBS, connected to YouTube with the channel’s stream details. Nintendo’s current Switch online information does not make a direct YouTube gameplay broadcast available.

How do I get longer Switch footage into a VOD?

The built-in Capture Button is for short clips

On supported games, holding the Switch Capture Button saves up to 30 seconds of gameplay from before the button press; the resulting clip is available in Album. Some games do not support capture. This feature is not a full-session recording method, so it will not produce a long VOD by itself. Nintendo Support: capturing and editing gameplay video

Transfer captures to a computer

Nintendo documents transferring captures to a Windows computer with a data-capable USB cable connected directly to the Switch. The dock’s USB ports do not support that transfer feature. Nintendo also identifies microSD as an alternative when USB transfer cannot be used. These transfer options move supported captures; they do not turn the short-clip function into full-session recording. Nintendo Support: transferring screenshots and videos

Use a capture card only when footage still needs to be recorded

If you need to create long-form footage from console output, a USB HDMI capture card can bring the Switch’s video signal into a computer for recording or encoding. Configure it as a video source in your recording software and test the setup with your specific console, card, and computer. A vendor’s Switch/OBS guide illustrates one setup, but does not establish compatibility for every device combination. AVerMedia support and setup guidance

A capture card is unnecessary if the VOD file already exists on the computer: OBS can loop that file directly.

How long can a YouTube livestream run before it stops saving?

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also cautions that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If the replay matters, keep a local recording and deliberately end the event and start a new one before reaching 12 hours; a restart creates a separate live event. YouTube’s livestream archive guidance and DVR guidance

Check Nintendo rights before looping gameplay

Nintendo’s Game Content Guidelines apply to uploads and livestreams. The guidelines encourage videos with the creator’s creative input and commentary and say creators may not simply upload or livestream existing Nintendo video or gameplay footage without their own creative or editorial input. They separately permit posting gameplay videos and screenshots made using Nintendo system features such as the Switch Capture Button without additional input or commentary. The distinction matters for a VOD loop: review the current guideline for the actual footage and format rather than assuming that permission for a short system capture settles every case. The guidelines also say third-party intellectual property requires the necessary third-party permissions and prohibit implying Nintendo sponsorship or affiliation. Pay particular attention to game music and other material that may involve third-party rights. Nintendo’s FAQ states: “The Guidelines cover both uploads and livestreams.” The FAQ was updated September 2, 2024; check the live guideline for current terms before broadcasting.

Keep the stream reliable and recoverable

  • Test privately or unlisted and inspect the YouTube preview before a public event.
  • Keep a local recording if the footage or eventual replay is important.
  • Monitor OBS and the Live Control Room during the broadcast; testing reduces avoidable faults but does not guarantee unattended uptime.
  • Plan a session break before 12 hours if you need YouTube’s automatic archive behavior, and start a new event deliberately.
  • Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the VOD to keep looping without leaving OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud option. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud handles continuous playback, so nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This changes where the looping and encoding run; it does not change YouTube or Nintendo’s rules for the content.
