Yes—but YouTube does not automatically burn Super Chat messages into prerecorded footage. If you send a finished video as an active YouTube livestream, eligible viewers can use Super Chat in Live Chat. To show messages over the video itself, add a chat overlay in your streaming encoder and send the composed video to YouTube.
Two ways viewers can see Super Chats
Beside the video in YouTube Live Chat
Super Chat is a Live Chat feature, not a graphic that YouTube automatically adds to the video. YouTube describes Super Chats as brightly colored, pinned messages during livestreams and Premieres, but not every chat supports the feature. Viewers can see eligible messages in the watch-page Live Chat beside the player. That chat is not available on embedded players, and some Live Chat features may be restricted by subscriber-only settings. YouTube explains the Live Chat and Super Chat conditions here.
Over the video itself
For messages to appear inside the video frame, you need to compose them into the outgoing picture. A streaming encoder can combine the prerecorded video with a chat overlay, then send that combined output to YouTube. This is separate from YouTube’s own watch-page chat: the overlay is part of the broadcast image, while native Live Chat remains alongside the player.
How to put a chat overlay over prerecorded footage
- Set up an active YouTube livestream. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow to create or schedule a stream and connect your encoder. The video must be sent as a live broadcast; simply uploading the finished file does not create Live Chat. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Load the prerecorded video in your encoder. Add the file as a media source or otherwise play it within the encoder’s scene. Check that the video and audio play as intended before going live.
- Add a chat overlay. OBS does not itself provide a built-in facility for displaying stream chat in the program output. Its guidance describes using a third-party chat overlay embedded as a Browser Source. See OBS Project’s chat-overlay instructions.
- Place and size the overlay. Arrange the browser source over the video in the encoder’s scene. Keep text legible and away from important footage. Confirm the complete scene—not just the media file—is what the encoder will send.
- Check Super Chat handling in the chosen widget. A widget that displays ordinary YouTube chat is not, by itself, proof that it renders Super Chats or their paid highlighting. Streamlabs documents a Chat Box widget for YouTube chat, but its documentation does not establish that every Super Chat or its paid styling appears in every configuration. Review the widget details and verify its behavior before relying on it.
- Test privately or unlisted, then check the viewer’s experience. Confirm that the composed overlay appears in the broadcast and that the selected integration displays Super Chats as you expect. Also verify that viewers can access the watch-page Live Chat if you want them to interact there.
A Premiere is an alternative, not an automatic overlay
YouTube Premieres let viewers watch a prerecorded video together and chat in real time. YouTube also says Super Chats are available in some Live Chats during Premieres. However, a Premiere does not automatically place those messages over the video image; the documentation describes chat alongside the viewing experience, not a native burned-in overlay. What happens to chat after the broadcast
YouTube can retain Live Chat Replay alongside a livestream archive, reproducing the chat as it appeared during the live broadcast. Replay is on by default for livestreams. Once the stream has ended, Live Chat itself is no longer available, although viewers may be able to comment below the video. YouTube’s moderation guidance covers Live Chat Replay.
