For an encoder running on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) instance, YouTube streaming is an outbound connection: the encoder pushes video to YouTube. Check the instance’s egress route, applicable OCI security-list and network security group (NSG) rules, and guest operating-system firewall. Do not open inbound RTMP on the instance unless it is actually receiving incoming video contributions. Prefer YouTube’s RTMPS URL; if an SSL error persists, YouTube advises trying port 443.
Which ports and firewall rules does YouTube streaming need on OCI?
There is no universal destination hostname or single port to enter for every YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, use the server URL shown for the stream and the protocol supported by your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP variant, and advises trying port 443 when an SSL error persists. Allow the encoder’s outbound connection to that actual endpoint and port through the network path and policies that apply to the instance.
A YouTube encoder connection initiated by an OCI instance does not require an inbound RTMP listener on that instance. Inbound access is relevant only if your design accepts incoming contributions or serves an application. Keep administrative access such as SSH or RDP separate from stream ingestion, and restrict it to authorized source addresses rather than opening it broadly.
Where to check OCI’s firewall controls
OCI has two VCN-level packet-filtering controls. Security lists apply to VNICs in an associated subnet; NSGs apply to selected VNICs. They can both apply to the same VNIC, so inspect each relevant layer and the instance’s operating-system firewall. Oracle recommends NSGs because they separate application security requirements from subnet layout. A VNIC can be associated with up to five NSGs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Control | Scope | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Security list | VNICs in its associated subnet | Whether the relevant subnet list permits the required outbound flow |
| NSG | Selected VNICs | Whether the instance’s VNIC belongs to the group and its rules allow the flow |
| Guest OS firewall | The operating system on the instance | Whether local policy permits the encoder’s required outbound traffic |
OCI’s default security list includes stateful SSH ingress and broad stateful egress; it does not include RDP ingress by default. Custom rules may differ. Stateful connection tracking permits return traffic for a connection initiated under a stateful rule, but a custom policy or another firewall layer may still block the stream.
Trace the actual egress path before changing rules
- Confirm where the encoder runs. If OBS or another encoder runs on your own computer, OCI firewall changes will not fix that computer’s outbound connection. If it runs on an OCI Compute instance, identify its VNIC and subnet.
- Identify the configured egress route. Determine whether the instance reaches the internet through an internet gateway, NAT gateway, proxy, or another configured path. The correct route depends on the subnet and deployment; do not apply a generic route-table recipe without checking the actual design.
- Check every applicable network rule. Review the subnet’s security lists and the instance VNIC’s NSGs for egress to the endpoint and port shown for your YouTube stream.
- Check the guest and name resolution. OCI rules do not override the guest firewall. Confirm the instance can resolve the server hostname and that local policy allows the encoder’s outbound connection. Oracle’s Linux-family example for opening a port uses
firewall-cmdand a reload, but its example port is 1521—not a YouTube streaming instruction. Adapt host policy only to the real requirement and operating system.
Set up the YouTube stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live / Live Control Room, then select the Stream tab or create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream into the matching server and key fields in your encoder. If the encoder offers a YouTube RTMPS preset, YouTube says to use it. Otherwise, retrieve the RTMPS URL through the lock icon in Stream settings.
- Start the encoder output, then check that Live Control Room receives a preview and reports stream health. Depending on the workflow, wait for preview and select Go live.
- Keep the stream key private: it functions like a password and address. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
A permitted network connection alone cannot fix a stale or mismatched key, incorrect server URL, unsupported protocol, inadequate upload capacity, or incompatible encoder settings.

Match encoder settings to YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant-bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
The bitrate values below are YouTube Help’s published settings; the page does not state a publication year. They are encoder recommendations, not speed-test results or universal targets. YouTube advises testing your available upload capacity and choosing a quality that remains reliable.

Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static image, then monitor Live Control Room stream health during the broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP; use the URL supplied for your stream rather than assuming every encoder or endpoint uses the same hostname.
Troubleshoot common connection failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Connection timed out | Verify the copied server URL, intended protocol, and encoder RTMPS support. Check the instance’s egress route, relevant OCI rules, and guest firewall. If the encoder runs locally, inspect that computer’s network rather than OCI. |
| SSL or certificate error | Confirm that the server URL and scheme are RTMPS rather than RTMP. YouTube advises trying port 443 if the SSL error persists. |
| No preview or stream rejected | Check that the key belongs to the selected event and is current, then verify the encoder protocol and settings. Reset an exposed key. |
| Intermittent stream or poor health | Compare available upload capacity with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the encoding profile and monitor stream health. |
| Cannot administer the OCI instance | Treat this separately from YouTube streaming egress. Check the intended SSH or RDP ingress rule, source CIDR, subnet security lists, NSGs, route, and guest firewall. |
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Network access and a healthy encoder do not establish that you have the right to stream the video, music, or other material in your broadcast. Use material you own or are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright requirements before going live. For a long-running stream, plan for rights and permissions to cover the entire loop; a firewall rule cannot prevent a copyright claim or resolve reused-content eligibility questions.
