There is no single Android recording format to change blindly. First identify what “playlist” means, then inspect the actual media streams with ffprobe. If you are joining recordings with FFmpeg, use stream copy only when their streams are compatible; otherwise normalize and re-encode with the concat filter. If playback stops in HLS, check the playlist paths, segment at the stopping point, and Android player support for both the segment container and its audio/video samples.
First identify which playlist is stopping
These three things are different, and the fix depends on which one you have:
- An FFmpeg concat list: a text file of media filenames passed to FFmpeg with the concat demuxer, commonly using
-f concat. - An HLS playlist: an
.m3u8manifest that points to media segments. - A YouTube playlist: a collection of separate YouTube uploads. It is not an FFmpeg concat list or an HLS manifest.
If you are unsure, check the file that fails: a text file containing paths and a line such as file 'clip.mp4' suggests an FFmpeg concat list; an .m3u8 file with segment or variant references suggests HLS. A YouTube playlist is managed on YouTube and does not itself define the media encoding of each upload.
Inspect the recordings before changing formats
A familiar extension does not prove two clips have compatible streams. Run ffprobe on each recording, including recordings immediately before and after the point where playback stops:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i phone2.mp4Compare the detected container, stream count and order, video codec and profile, dimensions, frame rate and pixel format, audio codec, sample rate and channel layout, plus durations and timestamps. The actual mismatch cannot be identified without these outputs; do not infer a codec from an extension such as .mp4, .3gp, .ts or .webm.
Android’s MediaRecorder API supports multiple output formats. Its specific recommendation to use 3GP applies when recording H.263 video with AMR audio: Android warns that MPEG-4 in that combination may confuse some desktop players. That conditional warning is not evidence that your phone or recording app used those codecs. Android’s Android 8.0 overview also notes MPEG-2 TS support, but that does not establish that a particular phone recording is TS.

Fix an FFmpeg concat list
FFmpeg documents two main concat approaches: the concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when inputs are suitable, while the concat filter is the appropriate route when you need to re-encode. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends the filter when re-encoding is needed. Do not assume that stream copy will work merely because all clips have the same filename extension.
Use the concat demuxer only for compatible inputs
When probing confirms matching stream layouts and parameters suitable for concatenation, put the files in a text list:

file 'phone2.mp4'Then use the concat demuxer and copy the streams:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i clips.txt -c copy joined.mp4This avoids a generation loss from encoding, but it cannot make incompatible inputs match. If FFmpeg reports stream or timestamp problems, or the output stops at a clip boundary, inspect the input metadata rather than repeatedly changing the extension.
Normalize differing clips with the concat filter
If the recordings differ in a way that makes stream-copy concatenation unreliable, normalize them and re-encode. This illustrative two-input example is for video-only inputs; adapt the dimensions, audio mapping, and output settings to the recordings you actually have:

-map "[v]" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p normalized.mp4If both clips have audio, include and normalize the audio inputs too, and use a concat filter configuration with audio. When audio layouts or parameters differ, make them consistent before concatenation. The example is a command pattern, not a verified fix for recordings whose metadata has not been supplied.

- Confirm every referenced URI resolves from the player’s location, and that the segment exists and is complete.
- Check whether playback always stops at the same segment. If it does, inspect that segment’s metadata and FFmpeg output or error log.
- Verify Android player support for the segment container and the audio and video sample formats inside it. Android’s Media3 HLS guide explicitly notes that the contained audio and video sample formats must also be supported; a valid-looking manifest or familiar extension alone is not enough.
- If you generate multiple HLS variants with FFmpeg, check that the output filename pattern includes
%v. This requirement applies to output patterns for two or more variants, not to every HLS playlist.
If the HLS media is assembled from Android recordings, probe the segments as well as the original clips. A playlist path problem and an unsupported sample format can both cause playback trouble, but they require different corrections.
Re-test the exact failure point
- Probe the normalized output with
ffprobeand confirm its streams have the parameters you intended. - Play through the former clip or segment boundary in the same Android player that showed the problem.
- Review FFmpeg’s output for stream, timestamp, or file-access errors; for HLS, verify the manifest’s referenced paths and segment files.
- If it still stops, collect the metadata for two adjacent clips or the failing segment, the full FFmpeg command and relevant log lines, the playlist text if it is HLS, and the Android version and playback app. Those details are needed to distinguish a format mismatch from a playlist or path fault.
