Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo loop a recorded property tour as a YouTube Live broadcast from Linux, use FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 before the video’s -i option, then send the paced, encoded output to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The loop flag repeats the file; it does not connect to YouTube, ensure the stream stays uninterrupted, or make a channel eligible to stream.
Before you start
You need a Linux host with FFmpeg available, a tour video you are permitted to broadcast, a stable upload connection, and access to YouTube Live Control Room. Check there that live streaming is available for your channel and obtain its current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. Account availability and any channel-specific limits are not established by the encoder settings below.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Confirm that you have the rights to rebroadcast the footage and any music, narration, or other material it contains. Check privacy and permission issues for identifiable people, private interiors, addresses, and property details under the rules that apply to you.
- Make sure the video file is accessible to the Linux account that will run FFmpeg and that the host can remain online for the intended broadcast.
Choose settings for the tour and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). The bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures below are YouTube Help recommendations verified in 2026, not universal minimums or independent measurements.
| Codec and target | YouTube’s recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p60 | 14 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1, 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1, 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
These recommendations are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings. Choose a target the installed FFmpeg build supports and your upload connection can sustain. For a typical SDR tour, match the file’s intended resolution and frame rate rather than upscaling or adding HDR complexity without a reason. YouTube recommends testing the stream and running a speed test; a speed test is a useful check, not a guarantee that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast.

Get the RTMPS URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream you intend to use, then locate its stream URL and stream key. YouTube may label these values differently depending on the Live Control Room screen.
- Use the RTMPS URL and key provided there. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions; do not substitute a guessed endpoint or share the key publicly.
- Keep the URL and key available for the command, or place them in a protected configuration method suited to your environment. Avoid saving a real key in a public script, terminal screenshot, or shared log.
Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies TLS and port 443 for the connection. If a network firewall blocks that traffic, FFmpeg may fail to connect even when the URL and key are correct.
Run FFmpeg in a loop
Replace tour.mp4 with the path to your file and replace the destination with the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. This illustrative command targets H.264 at 1080p30’s 5 Mbps recommended video bitrate; it is not a verified recipe for every file, FFmpeg build, endpoint, or network.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "tour.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://INGESTION_URL/STREAM_KEY"
What the important options do
-rerequests real-time pacing when reading a file, rather than sending it as fast as FFmpeg can process it.-stream_loop -1asks FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so it belongs before the corresponding-i. FFmpeg documents that loop0means no loop and-1means infinite loop.-i "tour.mp4"selects the input file. Quote paths containing spaces.-c:v libx264selects H.264 encoding. The encoder must be available in your FFmpeg build.-preset veryfasttrades encoding efficiency for lower encoding effort; if the host cannot keep up, inspect CPU load and FFmpeg output.-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a commonly compatible pixel format for SDR video.-b:vsets the target video bitrate;-maxrateand-bufsizeconstrain rate behavior. These values are examples for the stated 1080p30 H.264 target, not suitable defaults for every resolution or frame rate.-g 60requests a 60-frame GOP, which is a 2-second interval at 30 fps. If you change frame rate, adjust GOP length to preserve the recommended 2-second keyframe interval and do not exceed 4 seconds.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes audio as AAC. The example assumes the input has an audio stream.-f flvselects the output format used for this RTMP/RTMPS-style publish path.
For a different codec, output resolution, frame rate, or audio setup, change the relevant encoder settings deliberately and check the matching YouTube recommendation. Do not simply copy the 1080p30 bitrate into a 1080p60 or different-codec stream.
Test before the full broadcast
- Start FFmpeg with the correct URL and key. Watch its output for connection, encoding, or input errors.
- Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health messages. Confirm that the picture and audio are present and that the tour progresses as expected.
- Test with motion and audio representative of the actual tour. A static frame alone may not reveal whether the connection can sustain the intended stream.
- After confirming the test, start or schedule the public broadcast through the appropriate Live Control Room workflow. Keep monitoring FFmpeg and YouTube stream health during the session.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits or reports it cannot open the input | File path, permissions, available disk access, and whether the file decodes. | Use the correct path, quote it if it contains spaces, and verify that the same Linux user running FFmpeg can read the file. |
| No connection or YouTube receives nothing | Exact RTMPS URL and key, firewall access to port 443, and FFmpeg’s output. | Copy the current values from Live Control Room, keep the key private, and check whether the network allows the RTMPS connection. |
| Video arrives but YouTube reports poor stream health | Actual upload stability, selected bitrate, encoding load, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval. | Run an upload speed test, reduce the target bitrate or output settings to what the connection and host can sustain, and use a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). |
| Picture works but audio is missing | Whether the file contains an audio stream and whether FFmpeg selected it. | Inspect the input’s streams before assuming audio exists. If the file has multiple or no audio tracks, map or configure audio intentionally rather than relying on the example’s default selection. |
| The tour repeats but the broadcast drops | FFmpeg process status, network stability, YouTube stream-health messages, and URL/key configuration. | Looping repeats only the file input; it does not restart a failed process or guarantee an uninterrupted connection. Diagnose the actual reported failure before changing codecs or other settings. |
