How to Mount Oracle Cloud Block Storage for a Large YouTube Playlist

OCI storage can hold a local playlist index, but it does not download YouTube videos. Learn how to attach and mount the volume, persist it safely, and page through playlist items.

You can mount an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Block Volume on a compute instance to store application data, such as a local index of a large YouTube playlist. But mounting the disk does not download or mount the playlist itself: YouTube exposes playlist entries through its Data API, while OCI provides storage for your instance. For playlist metadata, retrieve entries with YouTube’s API; use the OCI volume only for data your application needs to keep locally.

What “mount a YouTube playlist” means

An OCI Block Volume is a block device attached to a compute instance. After connecting it to the guest operating system and mounting a filesystem, an application on that instance can use it like a disk. A YouTube playlist, by contrast, is a collection of playlist-item resources. The YouTube Data API returns those entries and their associated data; it does not turn the playlist into files on the OCI volume.

If your goal is to build or retain a local playlist index, the two systems can work together: request playlist items from YouTube, then have your application store permitted index or application data on the mounted volume. The volume attachment alone does not transfer video files. See Oracle’s Block Volume overview and Google’s playlistItems API reference.

Choose how the volume connects to your instance

Create or select a compute instance and a Block Volume in the appropriate OCI region and compartment, then attach the volume to the instance. For a VM, choose an attachment type supported by its shape and image. Oracle documents paravirtualized and iSCSI attachments; confirm current compatibility before selecting one.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Attachment type Guest-side connection When to consider it
Paravirtualized OCI connects the volume automatically after attachment; no additional guest connection commands are needed. Use when the VM shape and image support it and its performance meets your needs.
iSCSI Connect and log in from the guest operating system, unless the supported Block Volume Management plugin is configured to automate the connection. Required for some instance or older-image cases; Oracle’s overview describes higher IOPS than paravirtualized attachment, but actual performance depends on configuration.

Oracle’s connection documentation states: “For volumes attached with Paravirtualized as the volume attachment type, you don’t need to perform any additional steps after attaching the volumes; they’re connected automatically.” Read the current Connecting to a Block Volume guidance for your image and attachment type.

Connect and mount a new volume on Linux

  1. Attach the volume in OCI. In the OCI Console, open the compute instance’s attached block volumes and attach the volume, selecting a supported attachment type. Follow the console’s connection details if you chose iSCSI.
  2. Connect iSCSI if required. On the instance, use the connection information and commands provided for that volume and image, or configure the supported Block Volume Management plugin. Paravirtualized volumes connect automatically.
  3. Identify the device. On Linux, inspect the disks with sudo fdisk -l, as in Oracle’s Linux volume format-and-mount tutorial. Match the device to the volume you attached before changing it.
  4. Prepare a filesystem only if the volume is new and empty. Choose a filesystem suitable for your operating system and workload. Formatting can destroy data: do not format an existing volume until you have verified its identity and contents and have an appropriate backup.
  5. Create a mount point and mount the filesystem. Use the filesystem and device identified for your system. Oracle’s tutorial describes preparing and mounting a new volume; follow its current commands rather than assuming one device name applies to every instance.
  6. Verify the mount. Confirm that the intended filesystem appears at the mount point and that the application account can access the directory it needs.

Make the Linux mount persist after reboot

Add a boot-time mount only after the volume mounts successfully by hand. Oracle’s guidance covers both consistent device paths and traditional paths. The correct device path and /etc/fstab options depend on the attachment type and image, so do not copy a generic line without checking the instructions for your configuration. Oracle warns that omitting required options can prevent a Linux instance from launching.

Use Oracle’s current connection and fstab guidance, then validate the entry using the procedures for your image before relying on it at boot. If the instance fails to start after an fstab change, use OCI’s instance recovery or console access options to correct the entry; do not assume the volume itself is damaged.

Retrieve every item in a large YouTube playlist

Use YouTube Data API’s playlistItems.list method to enumerate playlist entries. A request can return at most 50 items. If the response includes nextPageToken, pass that token in the next request and continue until there is no next page. Store only the metadata or application data your use case requires on the mounted volume.

  1. Call playlistItems.list with the playlist ID and a maxResults value no higher than 50.
  2. Process the returned playlist items and retain the response’s nextPageToken, if present.
  3. Call the method again with that token; repeat until the response has no next-page token.
  4. Track requests and errors in your application so a failed page can be retried without treating an incomplete index as complete.

Each playlistItems.list call costs one quota unit. Google’s quota guide describes a default allowance of 10,000 units per day for most endpoints, but that is not a guarantee for every project or every API operation. Check your project’s actual allocation and usage in Google Cloud Console, and consult the current YouTube Data API quota calculator.

Performance and shared-volume considerations

Do not assume a particular throughput or IOPS figure from the attachment type alone. It depends on the instance shape and the volume configuration. For an Ultra High Performance volume, consult Oracle’s current attachment requirements: optimal performance requires a multipath-enabled attachment, and eligible shapes and images matter.

OCI does not coordinate concurrent writes across shared volume attachments. If multiple instances need to write to the same data, use a cluster-aware filesystem or another coordination layer designed for that pattern. A regular filesystem mounted read/write by multiple instances without such a layer risks data corruption; review Oracle’s shared-volume documentation before designing multi-instance access.

Troubleshooting

  • The volume does not appear in Linux: confirm that OCI shows it attached to the intended instance. For iSCSI, complete the guest-side connection and login steps or verify the management plugin configuration. Paravirtualized volumes connect automatically when supported.
  • The mount command fails: check that you selected the correct device and that a filesystem exists. Do not format a disk just to clear an error until you have confirmed it is a new, empty volume.
  • The mount disappears after reboot: review the image-specific /etc/fstab path and required options in Oracle’s documentation. Incorrect boot-time entries can stop Linux from launching.
  • The playlist index stops before the end: check for a nextPageToken and make another API call for each subsequent page, up to the 50-item limit per request.
  • Playlist requests hit quota limits: count the playlistItems.list calls and inspect the project’s actual quota allocation and use; the published default is not universal.
  • Multiple instances produce inconsistent data: do not treat a shared attachment as a cluster filesystem. Add a cluster-aware filesystem or a suitable coordination solution before allowing concurrent writes.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the actual goal is to keep uploaded recordings playing continuously as a YouTube live stream, that is a different job from mounting storage or indexing playlist metadata. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
